Vertex Operators, Grassmannians, and Hilbert Schemes
We describe a well-known collection of vertex operators on the infinite wedge
representation as a limit of geometric correspondences on the equivariant
cohomology groups of a finite-dimensional approximation of the Sato
grassmannian, by cutoffs in high and low degrees. We prove that locality, the
boson-fermion correspondence, and intertwining relations with the Virasoro
algebra are limits of the localization expression for the composition of these
operators. We then show that these operators are, almost by definition, the
Hilbert scheme vertex operators defined by Okounkov and the author in \cite{CO}
when the surface is with the torus action .Comment: 20 pages, 0 figure
Initial assessment of reliability of a self-administered web-based neuropsychological test battery
AbstractIntroductionWeb-based neuropsychological testing can be an important tool in meeting the increasing demands for neuropsychological assessment in the clinic and in large research studies. The primary aim of this study was to investigate practice effects and reliability of self-administered web-based neuropsychological tests in Memoro. Due to lack of consistent analysis and reporting of reliability in the literature, especially intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), we highlight how using different ICC measures results in different estimates of reliability.Method61 (31 females) participants (mean age 53.3 years) completed the Memoro tests twice with a median of 14 days between testing.ResultsPractice effects were detected for all cognitive measures (d = 0.32–0.61), most pronounced for memory measures. Reliability estimated using two-way random effects single measure absolute agreement ICC(2,1) were between 0.55 and 0.74. Two-way mixed effects average measure consistency ICC(3,2), ranged from 0.79 to 0.89. Reliability was highest for the processing speed task and lower for the memory tasks.ConclusionsMemoro tests had test-retest reliability similar to that of traditional, computerized and web-based test batteries used clinically and in research. It is important to carefully choose and specify the ICC implemented, as ICC(2,1) and ICC(3,2) give different results and reflect reliability of different measures
Proceedings of the Spacecraft Charging Technology Conference: Executive Summary
Aerospace environments are reviewed in reference to spacecraft charging. Modelling, a theoretical scheme which can be used to describe the structure of the sheath around the spacecraft and to calculate the charging currents within, is discussed. Materials characterization is considered for experimental determination of the behavior of typical spacecraft materials when exposed to simulated geomagnetic substorm conditions. Materials development is also examined for controlling and minimizing spacecraft charging or at least for distributing the charge in an equipotential manner, using electrical conductive surfaces for materials exposed to space environment
Chen-Ruan cohomology of ADE singularities
We study Ruan's \textit{cohomological crepant resolution conjecture} for
orbifolds with transversal ADE singularities. In the -case we compute both
the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring and the quantum corrected
cohomology ring . The former is achieved in general, the
later up to some additional, technical assumptions. We construct an explicit
isomorphism between and in the -case,
verifying Ruan's conjecture. In the -case, the family
is not defined for . This implies that
the conjecture should be slightly modified. We propose a new conjecture in the
-case which we prove in the -case by constructing an explicit
isomorphism.Comment: This is a short version of my Ph.D. Thesis math.AG/0510528. Version

A Specific Role of the Human Hippocampus in Recall of Temporal Sequences
There is a growing interest in how temporal order of episodic memories is represented within the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Animal studies suggest that the hippocampal formation (HF) is critical for retrieving the temporal order of past experiences. However, human imaging studies that have tested recency discrimination between pairs of previously encoded items have generally failed to report HF activation. We hypothesized that recalling a naturalistic sequence of past events would be particularly sensitive to HF function, attributable to greater involvement of associative processes. To test this prediction, we let subjects watch a novel movie and later, during functional magnetic resonance imaging, asked them to rearrange and "replay" scenes from the movie in correct order. To identify areas specifically involved in retrieval of temporal order, we used a control condition where subjects logically inferred the order of scenes from the same movie. Extensive MTL activation was observed during sequence recall. Activation within the right HF was specifically related to retrieval of temporal order and correlated positively with accuracy of sequence recall. Also, the bilateral parahippocampal cortex responded to retrieval of temporal order, but the activation here was not related to performance. Our study is the first to unequivocally demonstrate that correct sequence recall depends on H
First results of material charging in the space environment
A satellite experiment, designed to measure potential charging of typical thermal control materials at near geosynchronous altitude, was flown as part of the SCATHA program. Direct observations of charging of typical satellite materials in a natural charging event ( 5 keV) are presented. The results show some features which differ significantly from previous laboratory simulations of the environment
