RefDB: The Reference Database for CMS Monte Carlo Production
RefDB is the CMS Monte Carlo Reference Database. It is used for recording and
managing all details of physics simulation, reconstruction and analysis
requests, for coordinating task assignments to world-wide distributed Regional
Centers, Grid-enabled or not, and trace their progress rate. RefDB is also the
central database that the workflow-planner contacts in order to get task
instructions. It is automatically and asynchronously updated with book-keeping
run summaries. Finally it is the end-user interface to data catalogues.Comment: CHEP03 conference, 4 page
Higher Education in Asia and the Search for a New Modernity: An Introduction
No region has undergone as profound a transformation as Asia during the past halfcentury,
from the 1970’s to the present. The unprecedented economic growth has driven
major social and demographic changes and institutional reforms and, in most countries,
has brought about greater political stability. The advent of a large middle class, coupled
with the openness driven by economic imperatives, has contributed to greater
interconnectedness among Asian states and between them and the rest of the world.
Higher education was not estranged from these dynamics. On the contrary, at a time
when economic growth seems to be related to knowledge production and advanced
skills, Asian governments and citizens expect higher education institutions (HEIs) to
create the conditions for the development of their countries and to train the future generation
to be innovative and creative and to pursue sustainable growth [First paragraph
Usage of LSF for batch farms at CERN
CERN uses Platforms Load Sharing Facility (LSF) since 1998 to manage the large batch system installations. Since that time, the farm has increased significantly, and commodity based hardware running GNU/Linux has replaced other Unix flavors on specialized hardware. In this paper we will present how the system is set up nowadays. We will briefly report on issues seen in the past, and actions which have been taken to resolve them. In this context the status of the evaluation of the most recent version of this product, LSF 7.0, is presented, and the planned migration scenario is described
Modelling of flow around hexagonal and textured cylinders
The flow regime around a hexagonal polygon with low Reynolds numbers Re<200 is numerically investigated in two different orientations namely face-oriented and corner-oriented. The basic flow characteristics, including drag coefficient, lift coefficient, Strouhal number and critical Reynolds number of the hexagonal cylinders, are calculated using 2D transient numerical analysis. Within the studied range of Re, the predicted lift coefficient and Strouhal number of the face-oriented hexagon were higher than those of the corner-oriented hexagon. In contrast, the predicted drag coefficient and critical Reynolds number of the corner-oriented hexagon were greater than those of the face-oriented. Flow characteristics of a novel textured geometry are also studied using 3D transient analysis. The Strouhal number St of the textured geometry was found to be in between the St of both the hexagonal cylinders, and its lift coefficient is lower than that of the hexagonal cylinders

Shaping a Culture of Encounter in a Fragmented World: Culture, Politics, and the Promise of Interreligious Dialogue
We are constantly reminded on many different fronts that our global community is facing crises of major proportions. Of these, ethno-religious nationalism emerging in many different countries of the world, and the rapidly increasing destruction of our Earth\u27s ecosystem manifested in the phenomenon termed “climate change,” stand out as key challenges facing all of us. Pope Francis has called on all people of good will to work together in stemming the tide of destruction, and highlights the importance of interreligious dialogue in his regard. This essay names five areas wherein interreligious dialogue and cooperation may be applied to usher in in a culture of encounter in our fragmented world: Aesthetics, Academic Sharing, Spiritual Encounter, Concern for the World, and Friendship
