The use of prevalence as a measure of lice burden: a case study of Lepeophtheirus salmonis on Scottish Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., farms
This study investigates the benefits of using prevalence as a summary measure of sea lice infestation on farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. Aspects such as sampling effort, the relationship between abundance and prevalence arising from the negative binomial distribution, and how this relationship can be used to indicate the degree of aggregation of lice on a site at a given time point are discussed. As a case study, data were drawn from over 50 commercial Atlantic salmon farms on the west coast of Scotland between 2002 and 2006. Descriptive statistics and formal analysis using a linear modelling technique identified significant variations in sea lice prevalence across year class, region and season. Supporting evidence of a functional relationship between prevalence and abundance of sea lice is provided, which is explained through the negative binomial distribution
Dissociation and ionization of molecular gas in the spiral arms of M51
Researchers derive the star formation rate and efficiency in the arm and interarm regions of M51 from observations of the molecular (Lo et al. 1987) and ionized (van der Hulst et al. 1988) phases of the interstellar medium, and show that the HI observations of Tilanus and Allen (1989) are consistent with dissociation of molecular gas by these young, massive stars if n sub H greater than or equal to 200 cm (-2). However, these stars are not able to dissociate or ionize all the gas, and at least 60 percent must remain molecular in the interarm regions. The efficiency of star formation in M51 seems to be similar to that in the Galaxy, and does not appear to be enhanced in the spiral arms. Therefore, the effect of the strong density wave may be only to concentrate the gas, and hence the young stars, to the arm regions
Optimization of multivariate analysis for IACT stereoscopic systems
Multivariate methods have been recently introduced and successfully applied
for the discrimination of signal from background in the selection of genuine
very-high energy gamma-ray events with the H.E.S.S. Imaging Atmospheric
Cerenkov Telescope. The complementary performance of three independent
reconstruction methods developed for the H.E.S.S. data analysis, namely Hillas,
model and 3D-model suggests the optimization of their combination through the
application of a resulting efficient multivariate estimator. In this work the
boosted decision tree method is proposed leading to a significant increase in
the signal over background ratio compared to the standard approaches. The
improved sensitivity is also demonstrated through a comparative analysis of a

Assessing the performance of protective winter covers for outdoor marble statuary: pilot investigation
Outdoor statuary in gardens and parks in temperate climates has a tradition of being covered during the winter, to protect against external conditions. There has been little scientific study of the environmental protection that different types of covers provide. This paper examines environmental conditions provided by a range of covers used to protect marble statuary at three sites in the UK. The protection required depends upon the condition of the marble. Although statues closely wrapped and with a layer of insulation provide good protection, this needs to be considered against the potential physical damage of close wrapping a fragile deteriorated surface

Experimental Behaviour of CFRP Strap Strengthened RC Beams Subjected to Sustained Loads
Reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with transverse pre-stressed unbonded carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps have shown substantial increases in shear capacity when subjected to short-term static loading. However, understanding the time-dependent behaviour is a further prerequisite in order to better evaluate this strengthening technique and its engineering applications. This paper presents time-dependent experimental results from an un-strengthened RC beam and four RC beams strengthened with CFRP straps. The parameters under consideration included the concrete strength, applied load level and pre-stress level in the CFRP straps. The beams were subjected to sustained loads that were fixed percentages of the short-term failure load. To investigate the development of the external concrete strains, the internal steel shear link strains, the strap strains and the shear crack patterns, the beams were monitored over a period of around 320 days. The long-term beam deformations were also recorded and decomposed into bending and shear components. When compared with an equivalent unstrengthened beam, the presence of the CFRP straps reduced the proportion of the shear deflection. However, in the strengthened beams the shear proportions of the total mid-span deflection were still 24% to 28%, which were not negligible. An analysis using a Mohr’s circle of strain confirmed that the long-term tensile behaviour in the shear span appears to dominate the development of the shear deformation.Cambridge Commonwealth and Overseas Trusts

Cerebral small vessel disease, medial temporal lobe atrophy and cognitive status in patients with ischaemic stroke and transient ischaemic attack
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
Small vessel disease (SVD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are two common causes of cognitive impairment and dementia, traditionally considered as distinct processes. The relationship between radiological features suggestive of AD and SVD was explored, and the association of each of these features with cognitive status at 1 year was investigated in patients with stroke or transient ischaemic attack.
METHODS:
Anonymized data were accessed from the Virtual International Stroke Trials Archive (VISTA). Medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTA; a marker of AD) and markers of SVD were rated using validated ordinal visual scales. Cognitive status was evaluated with the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) 1 year after the index stroke. Logistic regression models were used to investigate independent associations between (i) baseline SVD features and MTA and (ii) all baseline neuroimaging features and cognitive status 1 year post-stroke.
RESULTS:
In all, 234 patients were included, mean (±SD) age 65.7 ± 13.1 years, 145 (62%) male. Moderate to severe MTA was present in 104 (44%) patients. SVD features were independently associated with MTA (P < 0.001). After adjusting for age, sex, disability after stroke, hypertension and diabetes mellitus, MTA was the only radiological feature independently associated with cognitive impairment, defined using thresholds of MMSE ≤ 26 (odds ratio 1.94; 95% confidence interval 1.28-2.94) and MMSE ≤ 23 (odds ratio 2.31; 95% confidence interval 1.48-3.62).
CONCLUSION:
In patients with ischaemic cerebrovascular disease, SVD features are associated with MTA, which is a common finding in stroke survivors. SVD and AD type neurodegeneration coexist, but the AD marker MTA, rather than SVD markers, is associated with post-stroke cognitive impairment
