Optical Spectroscopy of the IRAS 1-Jy Sample of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
This paper discusses the optical spectroscopic properties of the IRAS 1-Jy
sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs). One hundred and eight of the
118 1-Jy ULIGs have been observed at dlambda = 8.3 AA resolution over the
wavelength range ~4500 A -- 8900 A. These data are combined with large,
previously published sets of optical spectroscopic data of lower luminosity
infrared galaxies to look for systematic trends with infrared luminosity over
the luminosity range L_ir ~ 10^{10.5}-10^{13} L_sun. As found in previous
studies, the fraction of Seyfert galaxies among luminous infrared galaxies
increases abruptly above L_ir ~ 10^{12.3} L_sun --- about 50% of the galaxies
with L_ir > 10^{12.3} L_sun present Seyfert characteristics. Many of the
optical and infrared spectroscopic properties of the Seyfert galaxies are
consistent with the presence of a genuine active galactic nucleus (AGN). About
30% of these galaxies are Seyfert 1s with broad-line regions similar to those
of optical quasars. The percentage of Seyfert 1 ULIGs increases with infrared
luminosity, contrary to the predictions of the standard unification model for
Seyfert galaxies. Comparisons of the broad-line luminosities of optical and
obscured Seyfert 1 ULIGs with those of optically selected quasars of comparable
bolometric luminosity suggest that the dominant energy source in most of these
ULIGs is the same as in optical quasars, namely mass accretion onto a
supermassive black hole, rather than a starburst. These results are consistent

Droplets Transport in a Microfluidic Chip for In Vitro Compartmentalisation
In vitro compartmentalisation is an emerging technology for protein evolution and selection. In this presentation, we will report the development of a microdrop-based microfluidic platform for in vitro enzyme evolution and selection applications. A microfluidic chip has been developed and fabricated using the standard photolithography method in conjunction with electroplating and hot embossing techniques. A cross channel geometry was used to focus liquid flows for droplet generation. To realize on-chip compartmentalised bio-reactions, two droplet generators were fabricated on the same chip. Experiments have been carried out to measure droplet size, generation rate and speed using a photographic technique. Droplet size was found to be decreasing with increasing focusing oil flow rate for a given aqueous phase flow rate. When two droplet generators are used in the same chip, the droplets may be generated asynchronously due to different flow conditions. If the droplets were significantly smaller than channel size, the faster moving droplets could pass the slower moving droplets with little coalescence. If the droplets were of the channel size, the faster moving droplets would break or fuse with the slow droplets. To achieve high rate of droplet fusion, active control should be in place for synchronous generation and fusion
Unequal relationships in high and low power distance societies: a comparative study of tutor - student role relations in Britain and China
This study investigated people's conceptions of an unequal role relationship in two different types of society: a high power distance society and a low power distance society. The study focuses on the role relationship of tutor and student. British and Chinese tutors and postgraduate students completed a questionnaire that probed their conceptions of degrees of power differential and social distance/closeness in this role relationship. ANOVA results yielded a significant nationality effect for both aspects. Chinese respondents judged the relationship to be closer and to have a greater power differential than did British respondents. Written comments on the questionnaire and interviews with 9 Chinese academics who had experienced both British and Chinese academic environments supported the statistical findings and indicated that there are fundamental ideological differences associated with the differing conceptions. The results are discussed in relation to Western and Asian concepts of leadership and differing perspectives on the compatibility/incompatibility of power and distance/closeness
Optical and Near-Infrared Imaging of the IRAS 1-Jy Sample of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies: II. The Analysis
The present paper discusses the results from an analysis of the images
presented in Paper I (astro-ph/0207373) supplemented with new spectroscopic
data obtained at Keck. All but one object in the 1-Jy sample show signs of a
strong tidal interaction/merger. Multiple mergers involving more than two
galaxies are seen in no more than 5 of the 118 (< 5%) systems. None of the 1-Jy
sources is in the first-approach stage of the interaction, and most (56%) of
them harbor a single disturbed nucleus and are therefore in the later stages of
a merger. Seyfert galaxies (especially those of type 1), warm ULIGs
(f_{25}/f_{60} > 0.2) and the more luminous systems (> 10^{12.5} L_sun) all
show a strong tendency to be advanced mergers with a single nucleus. An
analysis of the surface brightness profiles of the host galaxies in
single-nucleus sources reveals that about 73% of the R and K' surface
brightness profiles are fit adequately by an elliptical-like R^{1/4}-law. These
elliptical-like 1-Jy systems have luminosities, half-light radii, and R-band
axial ratio distribution that are similar to those of normal (inactive)
intermediate-luminosity ellipticals and follow with some scatter the same mu_e
- r_e relation. These elliptical-like hosts are most common among merger
remnants with Seyfert 1 nuclei (83%), Seyfert 2 optical characteristics (69%)
or mid-infrared (ISO) AGN signatures (80%). In general, the results from the
present study are consistent with the merger-driven evolutionary sequence
``cool ULIGs --> warm ULIGs --> quasars,'' although there are many exceptions.

An examination of the relationship of governance structure and performance: Evidence from banking companies in Bangladesh
Corporate governance has become increasingly important in developed and developing countries just after a series of corporate scandals and failures in a number of countries. Corporate governance structure is often viewed as a means of corporate success despite prior studies reveal mixed, somewhere conflicting and ambiguous, and somewhere no relationship between governance structure and performance. This study empirically investigates the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms and financial performance of listed banking companies in Bangladesh by using two multiple regression models. The study reveals that a good number of companies do not comply with the regulatory requirements indicating remarkable shortfall in corporate governance practice. The companies are run by the professional managers having no duality and no ownership interest for which they are compensated by high remuneration to curb agency conflict. Apart from some inconsistent relationship between some corporate variables, the corporate governance mechanisms do not appear to have significant relationship with financial performances. The findings reveal an insignificant negative impact or somewhere no impact of independent directors and non-independent non-executive directors on the level of performance that strongly support the concept that the managers are essentially worthy of trust and earn returns for the owners as claimed by stewardship theory. The study provides support for the view that while much emphasis on corporate governance mechanisms is necessary to safeguard the interest of stakeholders; corporate governance on its own, as a set of codes or standards for corporate conformance, cannot make a company successful. Companies need to balance corporate governance mechanisms with performance by adopting strategic decision and risk management with the efficient utilization of the organization’s resources
Optical and Near-Infrared Imaging of the IRAS 1-Jy Sample of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies: I. The Atlas
An imaging survey of the {\em IRAS} 1-Jy sample of 118 ultraluminous infrared
galaxies was conducted at optical (R) and near-infrared (K') wavelengths using
the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope. The methods of observation and data
reduction are described. An R and K' atlas of the entire sample is presented
along with some of the basic astrometric and photometric parameters derived
from these images. A more detailed analysis of these data is presented in a

The significance of 'the visit' in an English category-B prison: Views from prisoners, prisoners' families and prison staff
A number of claims have been made regarding the importance of prisoners staying in touch with their family through prison visits, firstly from a humanitarian perspective of enabling family members to see each other, but also regarding the impact of maintaining family ties for successful rehabilitation, reintegration into society and reduced re-offending. This growing evidence base has resulted in increased support by the Prison Service for encouraging the family unit to remain intact during a prisoner’s incarceration. Despite its importance however, there has been a distinct lack of research examining the dynamics of families visiting relatives in prison. This paper explores perceptions of the same event – the visit – from the families’, prisoners’ and prison staffs' viewpoints in a category-B local prison in England. Qualitative data was collected with 30 prisoners’ families, 16 prisoners and 14 prison staff, as part of a broader evaluation of the visitors’ centre. The findings suggest that the three parties frame their perspective of visiting very differently. Prisoners’ families often see visits as an emotional minefield fraught with practical difficulties. Prisoners can view the visit as the highlight of their time in prison and often have many complaints about how visits are handled. Finally, prison staff see visits as potential security breaches and a major organisational operation. The paper addresses the current gap in our understanding of the prison visit and has implications for the Prison Service and wider social policy
Micro language planning for multilingual education : agency in local contexts
This paper overviews some of the domains of application of micro-level language planning approaches to foster multilingual education. It examines the language planning of local agents and the contexts in which their work contributes to multilingual education, either to expand or limit educational possibilities. It identifies four broad contexts of language planning activity in which local agents work: the local implementation of macro-level policy, contestation of macro-level policy, addressing local needs in the absence of macro-level policy and opening new possibilities for developing multilingualism. These contexts provide a way of framing the contribution that micro language planning work and local agents can make to multilingual education
Axial Vector Coupling Constant in Chiral Colour Dielectric Model
The axial vector coupling constants of the decay processes of neutron
and hyperon are calculated in SU(3) chiral colour dielectric model (CCDM).
Using these axial coupling constants of neutron and hyperon, in CCDM we
calculate the integrals of the spin dependent structure functions for proton
and neutron. Our result is similar to the results obtained by MIT bag and
