    Origin of Superconductivity in Boron-doped Diamond

    Superconductivity of boron-doped diamond, reported recently at T_c=4 K, is investigated exploiting its electronic and vibrational analogies to MgB2. The deformation potential of the hole states arising from the C-C bond stretch mode is 60% larger than the corresponding quantity in MgB2 that drives its high Tc, leading to very large electron-phonon matrix elements. The calculated coupling strength \lambda ~ 0.5 leads to T_c in the 5-10 K range and makes phonon coupling the likely mechanism. Higher doping should increase T_c somewhat, but effects of three dimensionality primarily on the density of states keep doped diamond from having a T_c closer to that of MgB2.Comment: Four pages with two embedded figures, corrected fig1.     Given a continuous function f(x)f(x), suppose that the sign of ff only has finitely many discontinuous points in the interval [0,1][0,1]. We show how to use a sequence of one dimensional deterministic binary cellular automata to determine the sign of f(ρ)f(\rho) where ρ\rho is the (number) density of 1s in an arbitrarily given bit string of finite length provided that ff satisfies certain technical conditions.Comment: Revtex, uses amsfonts, 10 page

    Design of hydraulic output Stirling engine

    A hydraulic output system for the RE-1000 free piston stirling engine (FPSE) was designed. The hydraulic output system can be readily integrated with the existing hot section of RE-1000 FPSE. The system has two simply supported diaphragms which separate the engine gas from the hydraulic fluid, a dynamic balance mechanism, and a novel, null center band hydraulic pump. The diaphragms are designed to endure more than 10 billion cycles, and to withstand the differential pressure load as high as 14 MPa. The projected thermodynamic performance of the hydraulic output version of RE-1000 FPSE is 1.87 kW at 29/7 percent brake efficiency

    Work performed during Summer 1984 (from June to Sept. 30) in the area of porous media for use in low temperature applications is discussed. Recent applications are in the area of vapor - liquid phase separation, pumping based on the fountain effect and related subsystems. Areas of potential applications of the latter are outlined in supplementary work. Experimental data have been developed. The linear equations of the two-fluid model are inspected critically in the light of forced convection evidence reported recently. It is emphasized that the Darcy permeability is a unique throughput quantity in the porous media application areas whose use will permit meaningful comparisons of data not only in one lab but also within a group of labs doing porous plug studies

    Prediction of force coefficients for labyrinth seals

    The development of a linear model for the prediction of labyrinth seal forces and on its comparison to available stiffness data is presented. A discussion of the relevance of fluid damping forces and the preliminary stages of a program to obtain data on these forces are examined. Fluid-dynamic forces arising from nonuniform pressure patterns in labyrinth seal glands are known to be potentially destablizing in high power turbomachinery. A well documented case in point is that of the space Shuttle Main Engine turbopumps. Seal forces are also an important factor for the stability of shrouded turbines, acting in that case in conjunction with the effects of blade-tip clearance variations

    Accurate measurement of ^{13}C - ^{15}N distances with solid-state NMR

    Solid-state NMR technique for measureing distances between hetero-nuclei in static powder samples is described. It is based on a two-dimensional single-echo scheme enhanced with adiabatic cross-polarization. As an example, the results for intra-molecular distances in α\alpha-crystalline form of glycine are presented. The measured NMR distances ^13 C(2) - ^15 N and ^13 C(1) - ^15 N are 1.496 ±\pm 0.002 \AA and 2.50 ±\pm 0.02 \AA, respectively.Comment: 12 page
