Nonbank Specialty Servicers: What's the Big Deal?

    Get PDF
Following the crisis, nonbank specialty servicers rapidly expanded their portfolios of distressed loans. This has contributed to a significant market change: in 2011, the 10 largest mortgage servicers were all banks; by 2013, only five of the top 10 were banks, and the other five were nonbank servicers. The rapid growth and lack of a federal regulator have contributed to significant, heated regulatory scrutiny. This commentary discusses major concerns raised about the largest nonbank servicers, focusing on the three fastest-growing large nonbank servicers. We explore the regulatory and market framework driving their striking growth, then address the major charges against them, in an effort to elevate the debate and inform sound policy

    Language Concordance: Overcoming Language Barriers

    • Language discordance is a growing problem facing health care today. Communication barriers can be cultural or language based and are commonly cited as a major contributor to poor patient compliance and health outcomes. • This research project seeks to identify promising developments aimed at overcoming language discordance through analysis of different translation implementation methods and correlating these with health outcomes.https://commons.und.edu/pas-grad-posters/1038/thumbnail.jp

Migraine, headache, and mortality in women: a cohort study

Background: Migraine carries a high global burden, disproportionately affects women, and has been implicated as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Migraine with aura has been consistently associated with increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. However, published evidence on relationships between migraine or non-migraine headache and all-cause mortality is inconclusive. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the effect of non-migraine headache and migraine as well as migraine subtypes on all-cause and cause-specific mortality in women. Methods: In total, 27,844 Women’s Health Study participants, aged 45 years or older at baseline, were followed up for a median of 22.7 years. We included participants who provided information on migraine (past history, migraine without aura, or migraine with aura) or headache status and a blood sample at study start. An endpoints committee of physicians evaluated reports of incident deaths and used medical records to confirm deaths due to cardiovascular, cancer, or female-specific cancer causes. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the effect of migraine or headache status on both all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Results: Compared to individuals without any headache, no differences in all-cause mortality for individuals suffering from non-migraine headache or any migraine were observed after adjustment for confounding (HR = 1.01, 95%CI, 0.93–1.10 and HR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.89–1.04). No differences were observed for the migraine subtypes and all-cause death. Women having the migraine with aura subtype had a higher mortality due to cardiovascular disease (adjusted HR = 1.64, 95%CI: 1.06–2.54). As an explanation for the lack of overall association with all-cause mortality, we observed slightly protective signals for any cancer and female-specific cancers in this group. Conclusions: In this large prospective study of women, we found no association between non-migraine headache or migraine and all-cause mortality. Women suffering from migraine with aura had an increased risk of cardiovascular death. Future studies should investigate the reasons for the increased risk of cardiovascular mortality and evaluate whether changes in migraine patterns across the life course have differential effects on mortality

In the Hands of the Ladies : The Founding, and Foundering, of Women\u27s Work for Women In Nagasaki, 1875-1880

This paper is part of an ongoing, monographic investigation of the lives and activities in Japan of the women missionaries of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). It investigates the origins of the Woman\u27s Board of Missions in the RCA, which grew out of the RCA\u27s frustrations with the independence, and financial clout, of the non-denominational Woman\u27s Union Missionary Society, which was led by a woman of the RCA, and was particularly active in Yokohama. The paper also delineates the first missionary project independently undertaken by the Woman\u27s Board, the Centennial Offering of 1876 dedicated to building a girls\u27 school in Nagasaki, and to supporting two teachers for a year at that school. Mary and Elizabeth Farrington, the two women selected for this mission, arrived in Nagasaki in 1878. However, they remained in Japan for less than a year, before returning to America because of ill-health, brought on by what they avowed was inadequate housing. Their difficulties and short stay were deeply discouraging to the Woman\u27s Board, and as a result, relations between the Woman\u27s Board, Synod\u27s Board, and Stout would remain problematical for years. The Farrington\u27s experience was illustrative of many of the difficulties which affected the work of the RCA Woman\u27s Board in Japan: the difficulty in recruiting healthy young women; the unrealistic expectations of many of the middle.class women they did commission as "assistant" missionar- ies; the opposition to educational work for girls at the supposed "cost" to "men\u27s" work, specifically theological training for young men; the strains within mission stations; and lastly, the lack of women with the staying power and tenacity of vision which had motivated the earlier work of the best.known woman missionary of the RCA, Mary E. Kidder in Yokohama, who had initially been sponsored by the male Synod\u27s Board of Missions, in 1869

New “golden” ratios for facial beauty

AbstractIn four experiments, we tested the existence of an ideal facial feature arrangement that could optimize the attractiveness of any face given its facial features. Participants made paired comparisons of attractiveness between faces with identical facial features but different eye–mouth distances and different interocular distances. We found that although different faces have varying attractiveness, individual attractiveness is optimized when the face’s vertical distance between the eyes and the mouth is approximately 36% of its length, and the horizontal distance between the eyes is approximately 46% of the face’s width. These “new” golden ratios match those of an average face

Impact of mirabegron extended-release on the treatment of overactive bladder with urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and frequency

Overactive bladder is a highly prevalent disorder with a significant impact on quality of life. Antimuscarinic agents are commonly used, but persistence is limited due to unsatisfactory efficacy and/or tolerability. Mirabegron is the first beta-3 adrenoceptor agonist approved for the treatment of overactive bladder syndrome. This paper reviews the pharmacology, mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety of mirabegron. A PubMed search of all English articles pertaining to mirabegron was performed. An alternative to antimuscarinics, mirabegron has a unique mechanism, improves overactive bladder symptoms and quality of life, and has limited adverse effects and few contraindications

Connecting Diverse Communities through a 4-H Urban-Rural Experience

Misconceptions regarding agricultural careers are exacerbated by increasing urbanization and are one of many differences in perspective between urban and rural communities. The One Georgia 4-H Urban-Rural Experience addresses this divide through a statewide youth exchange focusing on the agricultural sector. The program includes a multifaceted look at agricultural careers through visits to urban and rural communities. Focus group evaluations revealed the impact on youth through exposure to new careers, increased understanding of the diversity of agriculture, awareness of the interconnected nature of urban and rural communities, and a sense of belonging to a diverse group of youth
