On the Application of Deformation Kinetics to Nonlinear Constitutive Relations at Higher Temperatures

    Get PDF
A single phenomenological constitutive equation is derived theoretically from first principles and applied to aluminum, tin and lead. The theory is based on deformation kinetics of steady creep in which the fundamental mechanism is atomic transport over potential barriers whose conformation is distorted by the application of a stress field. The form of the functional dependence of barrier distortion and stress over the entire temperature range is found to be a sigmoidal curve which tends to straight lines of a unit slope in the small and high stress regions. With this form of barrier distortion, the constitutive equation prediction the steady creep behavior of aluminum, tin and lead over a wide range of temperature and stress

Some Recent Developments in the Endochronic Theory with Application to Cyclic Histories

Constitutive equations with only two easily determined material constants predict the stress (strain) response of normalized mild steel to a variety of general strain (stress) histories, without a need for special unloading-reloading rules. The equations are derived from the endochronic theory of plasticity of isotropic materials with an intrinsic time scale defined in the plastic strain space. Agreement between theoretical predictions and experiments are are excellent quantitatively in cases of various uniaxial constant amplitude histories, variable uniaxial strain amplitude histories and cyclic relaxation. The cyclic ratcheting phenomenon is predicted by the present theory

Dynamics of thermalisation in small Hubbard-model systems

We study numerically the thermalisation and temporal evolution of the reduced density matrix for a two-site subsystem of a fermionic Hubbard model prepared far from equilibrium at a definite energy. Even for very small systems near quantum degeneracy, the subsystem can reach a steady state resembling equilibrium. This occurs for a non-perturbative coupling between the subsystem and the rest of the lattice where relaxation to equilibrium is Gaussian in time, in sharp contrast to perturbative results. We find similar results for random couplings, suggesting such behaviour is generic for small systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Effects of propagation parallel to the magnetic field on the type 1 electrojet irregularity instability

    Get PDF
A simple analysis is presented which indicates that Type 1 irregularities which have a slight component of propagation along the magnetic field may be more unstable than those which propagate across the field. It was found that significant irregularity amplitudes may occur at the northern or southern extremities of the equatorial electrojet from those modes with large north-south group velocity, and they could significantly change our understanding of nonlinear solutions of the electrojet instability

Feshbach resonant scattering of three fermions in one-dimensional wells

    Get PDF
We study the weak-tunnelling limit for a system of cold 40K atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice close to an s-wave Feshbach resonance. We calculate the local spectrum for three atoms at one site of the lattice within a two-channel model. Our results indicate that, for this one-dimensional system, one- and two-channel models will differ close to the Feshbach resonance, although the two theories would converge in the limit of strong Feshbach coupling. We also find level crossings in the low-energy spectrum of a single well with three atoms that may lead to quantum phase transition for an optical lattice of many wells. We discuss the stability of the system to a phase with non-uniform density.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Modulo Three Problem With A Cellular Automaton Solution

An important global property of a bit string is the number of ones in it. It has been found that the parity (odd or even) of this number can be found by a sequence of deterministic, translational invariant cellular automata with parallel update in succession for a total of O(N^2) time. In this paper, we discover a way to check if this number is divisible by three using the same kind of cellular automata in O(N^3) time. We also speculate that the method described here could be generalized to check if it is divisible by four and other positive integers.Comment: 10 pages in revtex 4.0, using amsfont

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment at Fixed Topology

We describe the finite volume effects of CP-odd quantities, such as the neutron electric dipole moment and the anapole moment in the θ\theta-vacuum, under different topological sectors. We evaluate the three-point Green's functions for the electromagnetic current in a fixed non-trivial topological sector in order to extract these CP-odd observables. We discuss the role of zero modes in the CP-odd Green's function and show that, in the quenched approximation, there is a power divergence in the quark mass for CP-odd quantities at finite volume.Comment: 12 pages, revised manuscript to be publishe

Caring behaviours of student nurses: Effects of pre-registration nursing education

    Get PDF
In an increasing technologised and cost-constrained healthcare environment, the role of pre-registration nursing education in nurturing and developing the professional caring disposition of students is becoming far more critical than before. In view of this growing demand, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of Singapore's pre-registration nursing programmes on students' concept of caring. A descriptive quantitative cross-sectional survey collected data using the Caring Behaviour Inventory from first and final year student nurses, nurse lecturers and nurses in practice. The findings based on student surveys indicated a statistically significant reduction in the overall level of caring behaviour in first to final year students. When compared with the findings of lecturers and nurses, less variance to lecturers than to nurses was found amongst the first years' score, and the lowest variance to nurses was demonstrated amongst the final year. A greater reduction was evidenced amongst Singaporean students, which was exaggerated with exposure to pre-enrolled nursing education and magnified with caring job experience. This study indicates more effort is necessary to harness student caring attributes in students' entire educational journey so that expressive caring is not subsumed in the teaching of students to meet demands of complicated contemporary care

Finding The Sign Of A Function Value By Binary Cellular Automaton

Given a continuous function f(x)f(x), suppose that the sign of ff only has finitely many discontinuous points in the interval [0,1][0,1]. We show how to use a sequence of one dimensional deterministic binary cellular automata to determine the sign of f(ρ)f(\rho) where ρ\rho is the (number) density of 1s in an arbitrarily given bit string of finite length provided that ff satisfies certain technical conditions.Comment: Revtex, uses amsfonts, 10 page

Supersolid phase in spin dimer XXZ systems under magnetic field

Using quantum Monte Carlo method, we study, under external magnetic fields, the ground state phase diagram of the two-dimensional spin SS=1/2 dimer model with an anisotropic intra-plane antiferromagnetic coupling. With the anisotropy 4Δ34 \gtrsim \Delta \gtrsim 3, a supersolid phase characterized by a non-uniform bose condensate density that breaks translational symmetry is found. The rich phase diagram also contains a checkerboard solid and two different types of superfluid phase formed by Sz=+1S_z=+1 and Sz=0S_z=0 spin triplets, with finite staggered magnetization in z-axis and in-plane direction, respectively. As we show, the model can be realized as a consequence of including the next nearest neighbor coupling among dimers and our results suggest that spin dimer systems may be an ideal model system to study the supersolid phase.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
