Critical self-organization of astrophysical shocks
There are two distinct regimes of the first order Fermi acceleration at
shocks. The first is a linear (test particle) regime in which most of the shock
energy goes into thermal and bulk motion of the plasma. The second is an
efficient regime when it goes into accelerated particles. Although the
transition region between them is narrow, we identify the factors that drive
the system to a {\it self-organized critical state} between those two. Using an
analytic solution, we determine this critical state and calculate the spectra
and maximum energy of accelerated particles.Comment: To appear in ApJL, Sec.3 extensively rewritten, 4 pages, Latex,

Evidence for an incommensurate magnetic resonance in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)
We study the effect of a magnetic field (applied along the c-axis) on the
low-energy, incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in superconducting
La(1.82)Sr(0.18)CuO(4). The incommensurate peaks at 9 meV, which in zero-field
were previously shown to sharpen in q on cooling below T_c [T. E. Mason et al.,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1604 (1996)], are found to broaden in q when a field of 10
T is applied. The applied field also causes scattered intensity to shift into
the spin gap. We point out that the response at 9 meV, though occurring at
incommensurate wave vectors, is comparable to the commensurate magnetic
resonance observed at higher energies in other cuprate superconductors.Comment: 8 pages, including 4 figure
Study of the Fully Frustrated Clock Model using the Wang-Landau Algorithm
Monte Carlo simulations using the newly proposed Wang-Landau algorithm
together with the broad histogram relation are performed to study the
antiferromagnetic six-state clock model on the triangular lattice, which is
fully frustrated. We confirm the existence of the magnetic ordering belonging
to the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type phase transition followed by the chiral
ordering which occurs at slightly higher temperature. We also observe the lower
temperature phase transition of KT type due to the discrete symmetry of the
clock model. By using finite-size scaling analysis, the higher KT temperature
and the chiral critical temperature are respectively estimated as
and . The results are in favor of the double
transition scenario. The lower KT temperature is estimated as .
Two decay exponents of KT transitions corresponding to higher and lower
temperatures are respectively estimated as and
, which suggests that the exponents associated with the KT
transitions are universal even for the frustrated model.Comment: 7 pages including 9 eps figures, RevTeX, to appear in J. Phys.
Two phase transitions in the fully frustrated model
The fully frustrated model on a square lattice is studied by means of
Monte Carlo simulations. A Kosterlitz-Thouless transition is found at , followed by an ordinary Ising transition at a slightly
higher temperature, . The non-Ising exponents reported by
others, are explained as a failure of finite size scaling due to the screening
length associated with the nearby Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.Comment: REVTEX file, 8 pages, 5 figures in uuencoded postscrip
Heralded Two-Photon Entanglement from Probabilistic Quantum Logic Operations on Multiple Parametric Down-Conversion Sources
An ideal controlled-NOT gate followed by projective measurements can be used
to identify specific Bell states of its two input qubits. When the input qubits
are each members of independent Bell states, these projective measurements can
be used to swap the post-selected entanglement onto the remaining two qubits.
Here we apply this strategy to produce heralded two-photon polarization
entanglement using Bell states that originate from independent parametric
down-conversion sources, and a particular probabilistic controlled-NOT gate
that is constructed from linear optical elements. The resulting implementation
is closely related to an earlier proposal by Sliwa and Banaszek
[quant-ph/0207117], and can be intuitively understood in terms of familiar
quantum information protocols. The possibility of producing a ``pseudo-demand''
source of two-photon entanglement by storing and releasing these heralded pairs
from independent cyclical quantum memory devices is also discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; submitted to IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in

A Quantum Rosetta Stone for Interferometry
Heisenberg-limited measurement protocols can be used to gain an increase in
measurement precision over classical protocols. Such measurements can be
implemented using, e.g., optical Mach-Zehnder interferometers and Ramsey
spectroscopes. We address the formal equivalence between the Mach-Zehnder
interferometer, the Ramsey spectroscope, and the discrete Fourier transform.
Based on this equivalence we introduce the ``quantum Rosetta stone'', and we
describe a projective-measurement scheme for generating the desired
correlations between the interferometric input states in order to achieve
Heisenberg-limited sensitivity. The Rosetta stone then tells us the same method
should work in atom spectroscopy.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Aging to Equilibrium Dynamics of SiO2
Molecular dynamics computer simulations are used to study the aging dynamics
of SiO2 (modeled by the BKS model). Starting from fully equilibrated
configurations at high temperatures T_i =5000K/3760K the system is quenched to
lower temperatures T_f=2500K, 2750K, 3000K, 3250K and observed after a waiting
time t_w. Since the simulation runs are long enough to reach equilibrium at
T_f, we are able to study the transition from out-of-equilibrium to equilibrium
dynamics. We present results for the partial structure factors, for the
generalized incoherent intermediate scattering function C_q(t_w, t_w+t), and
for the mean square displacement msd(t_w,t_w+t). We conclude that there are
three different t_w regions: (I) At very short waiting times, C_q(t_w, t_w+t)
decays very fast without forming a plateau. Similarly msd(t_w,t_w+t) increases
without forming a plateau. (II) With increasing t_w a plateau develops in
C_q(t_w, t_w+t) and msd(t_w,t_w+t). For intermediate waiting times the plateau
height is independent of t_w and T_i. Time superposition applies, i.e.
C_q=C_q(t/t_r) where t_r=t_r(t_w) is a waiting time dependent decay time.
Furthermore C_q=C(q,t_w,t_w+t) scales as C_q=C(q,z(t_w,t) where z is a function
of t_w and t only, i.e. independent of q. (III) At large t_w the system reaches
equilibrium, i.e. C_q(t_w,t_w+t) and msd(t_w,t_w+t) are independent of t_w and
T_i. For C_q(t_w,t_w+t) we find that the time superposition of intermediate
waiting times (II) includes the equilibrium curve (III).Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, submission to PR
Flux compactifications and supersymmetry breaking in 6D gauged supergravity
We review on a recent construction of the on-shell supersymmetric brane
action for the codimension-two branes with nonzero tension in the flux
compactification of a 6D chiral gauged supergravity. On dimesionally reducing
on 4D gauged supergravity for a new supersymmetric unwarped background with
conical branes, we consider the modulus stabilization for determining the soft
masses of the scalars localized on the branes and show that the bulk U(1)_R
provides a new mechanism for mediating the SUSY breaking.Comment: 12 pages, no figures, Invited review for Modern Physics Letters A,
