Space station Platform Management System (PMS) replanning using resource envelopes

One of the responsibilities of the Space Station Platform Management System (PMS) is to maintain constraint-free, short-term plans for platform and free-flyer activities. Both the replanning function and the associated constraint-checking function are viewed as potentially requiring expert system assistance. The PMS Resource Envelope Scheduling System (PRESS) expert system, which is currently under development, is described. The PRESS capabilities will include the following: plan, replan, and perform constraint checking using resource envelopes resembling those required for telescience; initialize itself using the results fo a previous run; infer the replanning needs associated with a change in resource availability; allow the user to determine the level of interaction (including an advisory capability) with the system during execution; and generate both a graphic timeline and a report as output. The PRESS is being developed on an IBM PC/AT using TeKnowledge, Inc.'s M.1 expert system shell. The PRESS activity definitions and constraints are based on those defined for the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) mission scheduled for launch in early 1989

Smart devices are becoming more common in the standard households. They range from lights to refrigerators and their functionality and applications continues to grow with consumer demand. This increase in networked, complex devices has also brought an increase in vulnerabilities in the average consumer\u27s home. There now exists an Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem that creates new attack vectors for adversaries to spread malware, build botnets, and participate in other malicious activities. Public Perceptions of Delays in the Release of Police Body-Worn Camera Footage

Delays in the release of police body-worn camera (BWC) video footage have amplified public concerns about police misconduct. Law enforcement transparency is questioned when video from BWCs is not shared in a timely manner with the community. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore community and victims’ family’s beliefs related to delays in the release of police BWC footage. Rogers’s diffusion innovation theory and Mettler and Sorelle’s policy feedback theory were used for the study’s conceptual framework. The research questions focused on understanding the perceptions of community relationships with law enforcement around transparency, communication, and information sharing. A qualitative phenomenology study design was used to examine 13 participants’ lived experiences and what factors influence community and victim family members’ perceptions of law enforcement when there is delay in the release of BWC video. Computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software was used, along with manual coding, to code and analyze themes that emerged from the participants’ lived experiences. The results showed that both the community and the victim’s family members are requesting changes to community policing initiatives for better community engagement and for building positive relationships, trust, transparency, police legitimacy, and communication. This study presents law enforcement and society with insight on how to improve public perceptions and understanding of appropriate use of BWC videos

A quasi-experiment to evaluate the effects of a blended approach of simulation learning and podcasting on caring behaviours

Background: The need for quality nursing personnel in clinical practice expected nurse teachers to be able to impart instrumental and expressive aspects of caring behaviours to nursing students. Operating in a resource-limited higher educational context, nurse teachers are required to do so in a cost effective way. This study as part of a larger study evaluated the effects of a blended approach to learning of caring behaviours based on ‘modified’ medium-fidelity simulation scenarios and podcasting to repeat debriefs. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental, two group pre-test-post-test design. The study included 146 second year nursing students. Participants were divided into ‘intervention’ and ‘control’ groups and were asked to complete a caring behaviour inventory scale at various stages of the research study. Results: Students in the intervention group scored statistically higher, post receiving medium-fidelity simulation learning and higher post podcasting. The exposure to high fidelity simulation learning has resulted in the lower scoring in control group. Conclusions: This study highlights the value of a blended approach based on medium-fidelity simulation learning and podcasting. Successful learning of caring behaviours lies in the heart of a care-oriented teaching approach rather than the use of sophisticated technologies. This study has implications for a better practice in nursing education for developing student caring behaviours, it also has a wider implication for all vocational and non-nursing healthcare education

HypTrails: A Bayesian Approach for Comparing Hypotheses About Human Trails on the Web

When users interact with the Web today, they leave sequential digital trails on a massive scale. Examples of such human trails include Web navigation, sequences of online restaurant reviews, or online music play lists. Understanding the factors that drive the production of these trails can be useful for e.g., improving underlying network structures, predicting user clicks or enhancing recommendations. In this work, we present a general approach called HypTrails for comparing a set of hypotheses about human trails on the Web, where hypotheses represent beliefs about transitions between states. Our approach utilizes Markov chain models with Bayesian inference. The main idea is to incorporate hypotheses as informative Dirichlet priors and to leverage the sensitivity of Bayes factors on the prior for comparing hypotheses with each other. For eliciting Dirichlet priors from hypotheses, we present an adaption of the so-called (trial) roulette method. We demonstrate the general mechanics and applicability of HypTrails by performing experiments with (i) synthetic trails for which we control the mechanisms that have produced them and (ii) empirical trails stemming from different domains including website navigation, business reviews and online music played.
