Investigation of the SH3BP2 Gene Mutation in Cherubism
Cherubism is a rare developmental lesion of the jaw that is generally inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Recent studies have revealed point mutations in the SH3BP2 gene in cherubism patients. In this study, we examined a 6-year-old Korean boy and his family. We found a Pro418Arg mutation in the SH3BP2 gene of the patient and his mother. A father and his 30-month-old younger brother had no mutations. Immunohistochemically, the multinucleated giant cells proved positive for CD68 and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP). Numerous spindle-shaped stromal cells expressed a ligand for receptor activator of nuclear factor kB (RANKL), but not in multinucleated giant cells. These results provide evidence that RANKL plays a critical role in the differentiation of osteoclast precursor cells to multinucleated giant cells in cherubism. Additionally, genetic analysis may be a useful method for differentiation of cherubism.</p
BIM-Based Construction Information Management Framework for Site Information Management
Projects in the construction industry are becoming increasingly large and complex, with construction technologies, methods, and the like developing rapidly. Various different types of information are generated by construction projects. Especially, a construction phase requires the input of many resources and generates a diverse set of information. While a variety of IT techniques are being deployed for information management during the construction phase, measures to create databases of such information and to link these various different types of information together are still insufficient. As such, this study aims to suggest a construction information database system based on BIM technology to enable the comprehensive management of site information generated during the construction phase. This study analyzed the information generated from construction sites and proposed a categorization system for structuring the generated information, along with a database model for storing such structured information. Through such efforts, it was confirmed that such a database system can be used for accumulating and using construction information; it is believed that, in the future, the continual accumulation and management of construction information will allow for corporate-level accumulation of knowledge as opposed to the individual accumulation of know-how
Intramedullary fibula strut bone allograft in a periprosthetic humeral shaft fracture with implant loosening after total elbow arthroplasty
Periprosthetic fracture after total elbow replacement surgery is a difficult complication to manage, especially when it comes together with implant loosening. If stem revision and internal fixation of the periprosthetic fracture are performed simultaneously, this would be a very challenging procedure. Most of total elbow replacement implants are cemented type. Cement usage at periprosthetic fracture site may interfere healing of fractured site. Authors underwent internal fixation with use of locking plate and cerclage wire for periprosthetic fracture, allogenous fibular strut bone inserted into the humerus intramedullary canal allowing the fractured site to be more stable without cement usage. At 10-month follow-up, the complete union and good clinical outcome was achieved. We present a novel technique for treating periprosthetic fracture with implant loosening after total elbow replacement surgery, using intramedullary allogenous fibula strut bone graft
Recommending the Meanings of Newly Coined Words
AbstractIn this paper, we investigate how to recommend the meanings of newly coined words, such as newly coined named entities and Internet jargon. Our approach automatically chooses a document explaining a given newly coined word among candidate documents from multiple web references using Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis [1]. Briefly, it involves finding the topic of a document containing the newly coined word and computing the conditional probability of the topic given each candidate document. We validate our methodology with two real datasets from MySpace forums and Twitter by referencing three web services, Google, Urbandictionary, and Wikipedia, and we show that we properly recommend the meanings of a set of given newly coined words with 69.5% and 80.5% accuracies based on our three recommendations, respectively. Moreover, we compare our approach against three baselines where one references the result from each web service and our approach outperforms them
Design and Implementation of Storage System Using Byte-index Chunking Scheme
In this paper, we present an enhanced storage system that supports Byte-index chunking algorithm. The storage system aims to provide efficient data deduplication with high performance and to be performed in rapid time. We describe the overall procedure of Byteindex chunking based storage system including read/write procedure and how the system works. The key idea of Byte-index chunking is to adapt fixed-size block chunk scheme which are distributed to “Index-table ” by chunk’s both side boundary values. We have found that Byte-index chunking in storage system provides high performance compared with other chunking schemes. Experiments result shows that the storage system with Byte-index chunking compresses overall data with high deduplication capability and reduce the speed of file processing
Simultaneous fabrication of line defects-embedded periodic lattice by topographically assisted holographic lithography
We have demonstrated simultaneous fabrication of designed defects within a periodic structure. For rapid fabrication of periodic structures incorporating nanoscale line-defects at large area, topographically assisted holographic lithography (TAHL) technique, combining the strength of hologram lithography and phase-shift interference, was proposed. Hot-embossing method generated the photoresist patterns with vertical side walls which enabled phase-shift mask effect at the edge of patterns. Embossing temperature and relief height were crucial parameters for the successful TAHL process. Periodic holes with a diameter of 600 nm at a 1 μm-pitch incorporating 250 nm wide line-defects were obtained simultaneously
Conjugative plasmid mediated inducible nickel resistance in Hafnia alvei 5-5
Hafnia alvei 5-5, isolated from a soil-litter mixture underneath the canopy of the nickel-hyperaccumulating tree Sebertia acuminata (Sapotaceae) in New Caledonia, was found to be resistant to 30 mM Ni2+ or 2 mM Co2+. The 70-kb plasmid, pEJH 501, was transferred by conjugation to Escherichia coli, Serratia marcescens, and Klebsiella oxytoca. Transconjugant strains expressed inducible nickel resistance to between 5 and 17 mM Ni2+, and cobalt resistance to 2 mM Co2+. A 4.8-kb Sal–EcoRI fragment containing the nickel resistance determinant was subcloned, and the hybrid plasmid was found to confer a moderate level of resistance to nickel (7 mM Ni2+) even to E. coli. The expression of nickel resistance was inducible by exposure to nickel chloride at a concentration as low as 0.5 mM Ni2+. By random TnphoA´-1 insertion mutagenesis, the fragment was shown to have structural genes as well as regulatory regions for nickel resistance. Southern hybridization studies showed that the nickel-resistance determinant from pEJH501 of H. alvei 5-5 was homologous to that of pTOM9 from Alcaligenes xylosoxydans 31A
When should reverse total shoulder arthroplasty be considered in glenohumeral joint arthritis?
Anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been used widely in treatment of glenohumeral osteoarthritis and provides excellent pain relief and functional results. Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) was created to treat the complex problem of rotator cuff tear arthropathy. RSA also has been performed for glenohumeral osteoarthritis even in cases where the rotator cuff is preserved and has shown good results comparable with TSA. The indications for RSA are expanding to include tumors of the proximal humerus, revision of hemiarthroplasty to RSA, and revision of failed TSA to RSA. The purposes of this article were to describe comprehensively the conditions under which RSA should be considered in glenohumeral osteoarthritis, to explain its theoretical background, and to review the literature
Atomic layer coating of hafnium oxide on carbon nanotubes for high-performance field emitters
Carbon nanotubes coated with hafnium oxide exhibit excellent electron emission characteristics, including a low turn-on voltage, a high field enhancement factor, and exceptional current stability. Their enhanced emission performance was attributed to a decrease in the work function and an increase in the electron density of states at the carbon nanotube Fermi level closest to the conduction band minimum of hafnium oxide. In addition, the enhanced current stability was attributed to the ability of hafnium oxide to protect the carbon nanotubes against ions and free radicals created in the electron field emission process.
