    The New Zombie Apocalypse and Social Crisis in South Korean Cinema

    The popular culture version of the zombie, developed over the latter half of the twentieth century, made only sporadic appearances in South Korean film, which may in part be attributed to the restrictions on the distribution of American and Japanese films before 1988. Thus the first zombie film Monstrous Corpse (Goeshi 1980, directed by Gang Beom-Gu), was a loose remake of the Spanish-Italian Non si deve profanare il sonno dei morti (1974). Monstrous Corpse was largely forgotten until given a screening by KBS in 2011. Zombies don’t appear again for a quarter of a century. This article examines four zombie films released between 2012 and 2018: “Ambulance”, the fourth film in Horror Stories (2012), a popular horror portmanteau film; Train to Busan (2016) (directed by Yeon Sang-Ho), the first South Korean blockbuster film in the “zombie apocalypse” sub-genre; Seoul Station (2016), an animation prequel to Train to Busan (also directed by Yeon Sang-Ho); and Rampant (2018, directed by Kim Seong-Hun ), a costume drama set in Korea’s Joseon era. Based on a cognitive studies approach, this article examines two conceptual metaphors which underlie these films: the very common metaphor, LIFE IS A JOURNEY, and the endemically Korean metaphor THE NATION IS A FAMILY

    Impact of Toxocariasis in Patients with Unexplained Patchy Pulmonary Infiltrate in Korea

    Toxocariasis is one of the causes of pulmonary eosinophilic infiltrate that is increasing in Korea. This study was designed to identify the prevalence of toxocara seropositivity in patients with unexplained pulmonary patchy infiltrate and to evaluate associated factors. We evaluated 102 patients with unexplained pulmonary patchy infiltrate on chest computed tomography (CT) scan. As a control set, 116 subjects with normal chest CT were also evaluated. History of allergic disease, drug use, parasitic disease and raw cow liver intake were taken. Blood eosinophil count and total IgE level were measured. Specific serum IgG antibody to Toxocara canis larval antigen and specific IgG antibodies to 4 other parasites were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In the infiltrate group, 66.7% subjects were toxocara seropositive whereas 22.4% of the control group were seropositive (p<0.001). In the infiltrate group, patients with a history of eating raw cow liver (odds ratio [OR], 7.8) and patients with eosinophilia (OR, 5.2) had a higher incidence of toxocara seropositivity. Thirty-five percent of toxocara seropositive patients with infiltrate exhibited migrating infiltrate and 48% had decreased infiltrate on the follow-up CT. We recommend that toxocara ELISA should be performed in patients with unexplained pulmonary patchy infiltrate, and that the eating of raw cow liver should be actively discouraged

    Structure-activity relationships of fluorene compounds inhibiting HCV variants

    Approximately 71 million people suffer from hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection worldwide. Persistent HCV infection causes liver diseases such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, resulting in approximately 400,000 deaths annually. Effective direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) have been developed and are currently used for HCV treatment targeting the following three proteins: NS3/4A proteinase that cleaves the HCV polyprotein into various functional proteins, RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (designated as NS5B), and NS5A, which is required for the formation of double membrane vesicles serving as RNA replication organelles. At least one compound inhibiting NS5A is included in current HCV treatment regimens due to the high efficacy and low toxicity of drugs targeting NS5A. Here we report fluorene compounds showing strong inhibitory effects on GT 1b and 3a of HCV. Moreover, some compounds were effective against resistance-associated variants to DAAs. The structure-activity relationships of the compounds were analyzed.     Comparison of the effects of intraoperative remifentanil and sufentanil infusion on postoperative pain management in robotic gynecological surgery: a retrospective cohort study

    Background Remifentanil and sufentanil are potent short-acting synthetic opioid analgesics. The administration of remifentanil has been associated with the incidence of opioid-induced hyperalgesia. Opioid-induced hyperalgesia may be alleviated when opioids, such as morphine, are switched to sufentanil. Therefore, this retrospective observational study aimed to compare the effects of remifentanil and sufentanil on postoperative pain in patients undergoing robotic gynecological surgery. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the electronic medical records of patients who underwent elective robotic gynecological surgery between January 2016 and February 2021. The patients were classified into sufentanil (n = 159) or remifentanil (n = 359) groups according to the opioids administered continuously during anesthesia. The primary outcome assessed in this study was the postoperative pain score measured using the numeric rating scale (NRS). The secondary outcomes assessed included the recovery time (from discontinuation of opioid infusion to extubation) and frequency of rescue analgesic administration in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Results The recovery time did not differ significantly between the two groups. The NRS score for pain (median [1Q, 3Q]) in the PACU was significantly lower in the sufentanil group than in the remifentanil group (2 [2, 3] vs. 4 [3, 7], P < 0.001). The frequency of rescue analgesic administration in the PACU was 6.3% and 35.4% in the sufentanil and remifentanil groups, respectively (P < 0.001). Conclusions Sufentanil, as an adjunct to sevoflurane anesthesia is more advantageous than remifentanil in terms of postoperative pain control during robotic gynecological surgery

    Group Music Intervention Reduces Aggression and Improves Self-esteem in Children with Highly Aggressive Behavior: A Pilot Controlled Trial

    We investigated the effects of group music intervention on aggression and self-esteem in children with highly aggressive behavior. Forty-eight children were allocated to either a music intervention group or an untreated control group. The music intervention group received 50 min of music intervention twice weekly for 15 consecutive weeks. The outcome measures were Child Behavior Checklist Aggression Problems Scale (Parents), Child Aggression Assessment Inventory (Teachers) and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. After 15 weeks, the music intervention group showed significant reduction of aggression and improvement of self-esteem compared with the control group. All outcome measures were significantly lower in the music intervention group than prior to treatment, while there was no change in the control group. These findings suggest that music can reduce aggressive behavior and improve self-esteem in children with highly aggressive behavior. Music intervention is an easily accessible therapy for children and as such may be an effective intervention for aggressive behavior. Further more, objective and replicable measures are required from a randomized controlled trial with a larger sample size and active comparable control

    The Ship Detection Using Airborne and In-situ Measurements Based on Hyperspectral Remote Sensing

    International audienceMaritime accidents around the Korean Peninsula are increasing, and the ship detection research using remote sensing data is consequently becoming increasingly important. This study presented a new ship detection algorithm using hyperspectral images that provide the spectral information of several hundred channels in the ship detection field, which depends on high resolution optical imagery. We applied a spectral matching algorithm between the reflection spectrum of the ship deck obtained from two field observations and the ship and seawater spectrum of the hyperspectral sensor of an airborne visible/infrared imaging spectrometer. A total of five detection algorithms were used, namely spectral distance similarity (SDS), spectral correlation similarity (SCS), spectral similarity value (SSV), spectral angle mapper (SAM), and spectral information divergence (SID). SDS showed an error in the detection of seawater inside the ship, and SAM showed a clear classification result with a difference between ship and seawater of approximately 1.8 times. Additionally, the present study classified the vessels included in hyperspectral images by presenting the adaptive thresholds of each technique. As a result, SAM and SID showed superior ship detection abilities compared to those of other detection algorithms

    Regulation of TM4SF5-mediated tumorigenesis through induction of cell detachment and death by tiarellic acid

    mRNA for four-transmembrane L6 family member 5 (TM4SF5), a homolog of tumor antigen L6, was previously shown to be highly expressed in diverse tumors. We recently found that human hepatocarcinoma tissues also overexpressed TM4SF5 protein, in comparison to normal liver tissues.We also found that tiarellic acid (TA) caused cell detachment-related apoptosis in cells expressing endogenous or stably-overexpressing TM4SF5. When cells expressing TM4SF5 were treated with TA, we observed reduced phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase, paxillin, and p130Cas, but not c-Src. TA treatment also caused focal adhesion loss and reduced cell adhesion, and increased the numbers of floating cells and apoptotic cells. These effects were blocked by overexpression of focal adhesion molecules, suggesting that treatment with TA mediates anoikis of TM4SF5-expressing cells. However, TM4SF5-null cells were not affected by TA, indicating that these effects occur specifically in TM4SF5-positive cells. TA administration reduced tumor formation in nude mice injected with TM4SF5-expressing cells, presumably through increased apoptosis in TM4SF5-positive tumors. These observations indicate that TM4SF5-positive tumorigenesis can be inhibited by TA via induction of cell detachment-related apoptosis, and suggest that TA may be developed as a putative therapeutic reagent against TM4SF5-positive tumorigenesis
