    Post-Crisis Financial Reform in Korea: A Critical Appraisal

    In the aftermath of the economic crisis of 1997-98 South Korea has undertaken a number of financial reforms under IMF auspices. One of such reforms was in financial supervision, which created the Financial Supervisory Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service. In spite of these reforms Korea has recently experienced a costly financial instability relating to credit-card companies and household debts. Korea’s success in bringing about rapid economic recovery from the crisis may have lessened, as suggested by the World Bank, the urgency for full financial reform. This paper, however, argues that the newly created supervisory agencies, although created as independent agencies, have not in fact functioned as such and thus failed to carry out proper supervision over credit-card companies. It is argued that those agencies have not been able to function independently due to institutional constraints imposed on them by other extant, formal as well as informal, institutions in Korea.Financial reform, financial supervision, institutions

    The Eclipsing δ\delta Scuti Star EPIC 245932119

    We present the physical properties of EPIC 245932119 (KpK_{\rm p} = ++9.82) exhibiting both eclipses and pulsations from the {\it K{\rm 2}} photometry. The binary modeling indicates that the eclipsing system is in detached or semi-detached configurations with a mass ratio of 0.283 or 0.245, respectively, and that its light-curve parameters are almost unaffected by pulsations. Multiple frequency analyses were performed for the light residuals in the outside-primary eclipsing phase after subtracting the binarity effects from the observed data. We detected 35 frequencies with signal to noise amplitude ratios larger than 4.0 in two regions of 0.62-6.28 day1^{-1} and 19.36-24.07 day1^{-1}. Among these, it is possible that some high signals close to the Nyquist limit fNyf_{\rm Ny} may be reflections of real pulsation frequencies (2fNyfif_{\rm Ny}-f_i). All frequencies (f8f_8, f9f_9, f14f_{14}, f18f_{18}, f24f_{24}, f32f_{32}) in the lower frequency region are orbital harmonics, and three high frequencies (f19f_{19}, f20f_{20}, f22f_{22}) appear to be sidelobes split from the main frequency of f1f_1 = 22.77503 day1^{-1}. Most of them are thought to be alias effects caused by the orbital frequency. For the 26 other frequencies, the pulsation periods and pulsation constants are in the ranges of 0.041-0.052 days and 0.013-0.016 days, respectively. These values and the position in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram reveal that the primary component is a δ\delta Sct pulsator. The observational properties of EPIC 245932119 are in good agreement with those for eclipsing binaries with δ\delta Sct-type pulsating components.Comment: 17 pages, including 5 figures and 3 tables, accepted for publication in A

    Neutrino Interactions In Color-Flavor-Locked Dense Matter

    At high density, diquarks could condense in the vacuum with the QCD color spontaneously broken. Based on the observation that the symmetry breaking pattern involved in this phenomenon is essentially the same as that of the Pati-Salam model with broken electroweak--color SU(3) group, we determine the relevant electroweak interactions in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase in high density QCD.     Characterization of Metastatic Tumor Formation by the Colony Size Distribution

    Knowledge regarding the kinetics of metastatic tumor formation, as related to the growth of the primary tumor, represents a fundamental issue in cancer biology. Using an in vivo mammalian model, we show here that one can obtain useful information from the frequency distribution of the sizes of metastatic colonies in distant organs after serial sectioning and image reconstruction. To explain the experimental findings, we constructed a biophysical model based on the respective growth patterns of the primary tumor and metastases and a stochastic process of metastatic colony formation. Heterogeneous distributions of various biological parameters were considered. We found that the elementary assumption of exponential forms of growth for the primary tumor and metastatic colonies predicts a linear relation on a log-log plot of a metastatic colony size distribution, which was consistent with the experimental results. Furthermore, the slope of the curve signifies the ratio of growth rates of the primary and the metastases. Non-exponential (Gompertzian and logistic) tumor growth patterns were also incorporated into the theory to explain possible deviation from the log-log linear relation. The observed metastasis-free probability also supported the assumption of a time-dependent Poisson process. With this approach, we determined the mechanistic parameters governing the process of metastatogenesis in the lungs for two murine tumor cell lines (KHT and MCaK). Since biological parameters specified in the model could be obtained in the laboratory, a workable metastatic "assay" may be established for various malignancies and in turn contribute in formulating rational treatment regimens for subclinical metastases.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Strong correlation effects in the doped Hubbard model in infinite dimensions

    The density of states and the optical conductivity of the doped Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice with infinite connectivities have been studied using an analytic variant of the Lanczos continued fraction method. The spectral weight of the gap states and the position of the chemical potential upon hole or electron doping have been studied.
