A Possible Origin of Dark Energy

We discuss the possibility that the existence of dark energy may be due to the presence of a spin zero field ϕ(x)\phi(x), either elementary or composite. In the presence of other matter field, the transformation ϕ(x)ϕ(x)+\phi(x)\to \phi(x) + constant can generate a negative pressure, like the cosmological constant. In this picture, our universe can be thought as a very large bag, similar to the much smaller MIT bag model for a single nucleon.Comment: 4 pages, no figure, typos correcte

Staggered-flux normal state in the weakly doped t-J model

A normal (non-superconducting) ground state of the t-J model may be variationally approximated by a Gutzwiller-projected wave function. Within this approximation, at small hole doping near half-filling, the normal state favors staggered-flux ordering. Such a staggered-flux state may occur in vortex cores of underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors. From comparing the energies of the staggered-flux state and of the superconducting state, we numerically obtain the condensation energy. Extracting the superfluid density directly from the projected superconducting wave function, we can also estimate the coherence length at zero temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

An Adversarial Interpretation of Information-Theoretic Bounded Rationality

Recently, there has been a growing interest in modeling planning with information constraints. Accordingly, an agent maximizes a regularized expected utility known as the free energy, where the regularizer is given by the information divergence from a prior to a posterior policy. While this approach can be justified in various ways, including from statistical mechanics and information theory, it is still unclear how it relates to decision-making against adversarial environments. This connection has previously been suggested in work relating the free energy to risk-sensitive control and to extensive form games. Here, we show that a single-agent free energy optimization is equivalent to a game between the agent and an imaginary adversary. The adversary can, by paying an exponential penalty, generate costs that diminish the decision maker's payoffs. It turns out that the optimal strategy of the adversary consists in choosing costs so as to render the decision maker indifferent among its choices, which is a definining property of a Nash equilibrium, thus tightening the connection between free energy optimization and game theory.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Electro-expulsive separation system

    Get PDF
An electro-expulsive system has one or more overlapped conductors, each comprising a flexible ribbon conductor, which is folded back on itself. The conductors are embedded in an elastomeric material. Large current pulses are fed to the conductors from power storage units. As a result of the antiparallel currents, the opposed segments of a conductor are forcefully separated and the elastomeric material is distended. Voids in the elastomer aid the separation of the conductor segments. The distention is almost instantaneous when a current pulse reaches the conductor and the distention tends to remove any solid body on the surface of the elastomeric material

    An economical vent cover

    Get PDF
Inexpensive formed-plastic vent cover has been developed that allows controlled purge of vent systems and also provides blowout protection. Cover can also be used in relief mode to allow normal system relief flows without disengaging from vent system. Cover consists of two parts made of plastics with varying densities to fit media used and desired pressures
