Accurate determination of the scattering length of metastable Helium atoms using dark resonances between atoms and exotic molecules
We present a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length a of
spin-polarized helium atoms in the 2^3S_1 metastable state. Using two-photon
photoassociation spectroscopy and dark resonances we measure the energy
E_{v=14}= -91.35 +/- 0.06 MHz of the least bound state v=14 in the interaction
potential of the two atoms. We deduce a value of a = 7.512 +/- 0.005 nm, which
is at least one hundred times more precise than the best previous
determinations and is in disagreement with some of them. This experiment also
demonstrates the possibility to create exotic molecules binding two metastable
atoms with a lifetime of the order of 1 microsecond.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Low-noise 1 THz niobium superconducting tunnel junction mixer with a normal metal tuning circuit
We describe a 1 THz quasioptical SIS mixer which uses a twin-slot antenna, an antireflection-coated silicon hyperhemispherical lens, Nb/Al-oxide/Nb tunnel junctions, and an aluminum normal-metal tuning circuit in a two-junction configuration. Since the mixer operates substantially above the gap frequency of niobium (nu >~ 2 Delta/h ~ 700 GHz), a normal metal is used in the tuning circuit in place of niobium to reduce the Ohmic loss. The frequency response of the device was measured using a Fourier transform spectrometer and agrees reasonably well with the theoretical prediction. At 1042 GHz, the uncorrected double-sideband receiver noise temperature is 840 K when the physical temperature of the mixer is 2.5 K. This is the first SIS mixer which outperforms GaAs Schottky diode mixers by a large margin at 1 THz
Theory of evaporative cooling with energy-dependent elastic scattering cross section and application to metastable helium
The kinetic theory of evaporative cooling developed by Luiten et al. [Phys.
Rev. A 53, 381 (1996)] is extended to include the dependence of the elastic
scattering cross section on collision energy. We introduce a simple
approximation by which the transition range between the low-temperature limit
and the unitarity limit is described as well. Applying the modified theory to
our measurements on evaporative cooling of metastable helium we find a
scattering length |a| = 10(5) nm
Estimating the number of change-points in a two-dimensional segmentation model without penalization
In computational biology, numerous recent studies have been dedicated to the
analysis of the chromatin structure within the cell by two-dimensional
segmentation methods. Motivated by this application, we consider the problem of
retrieving the diagonal blocks in a matrix of observations. The theoretical
properties of the least-squares estimators of both the boundaries and the
number of blocks proposed by L\'evy-Leduc et al. [2014] are investigated. More
precisely, the contribution of the paper is to establish the consistency of
these estimators. A surprising consequence of our results is that, contrary to
the onedimensional case, a penalty is not needed for retrieving the true number
of diagonal blocks. Finally, the results are illustrated on synthetic data.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figure
Characterization of submillimetre quasi-optical twin-slot double-junction SIS mixers
We report on the continuing development of submillimetre quasi-optical slot antenna SIS mixers, which use two-junction tuning circuits. Direct and heterodyne Fourier transform spectrometer measurements have been performed to compare device performance with predictions. Demonstrated double-sideband receiver noise temperatures of better than 540 K at 808 GHz make these SIS mixers substantially better than GaAs Schottky receivers for the astronomically important CI and CO transitions near 810 GHz
Analysis of Photoassociation Spectra for Giant Helium Dimers
We perform a theoretical analysis to interpret the spectra of purely
long-range helium dimers produced by photoassociation (PA) in an ultra-cold gas
of metastable helium atoms. The experimental spectrum obtained with the PA
laser tuned closed to the atomic line has been
reported in a previous Letter. Here, we first focus on the corrections to be
applied to the measured resonance frequencies in order to infer the molecular
binding energies. We then present a calculation of the vibrational spectra for
the purely long-range molecular states, using adiabatic potentials obtained
from perturbation theory. With retardation effects taken into account, the
agreement between experimental and theoretical determinations of the spectrum
for the purely long-range potential well is very good. The results
yield a determination of the lifetime of the atomic state
Quasi-optical SIS mixers with normal metal tuning structures
We recently reported (1996) a quasi-optical SIS mixer which used Nb/Al-oxide/Nb tunnel junctions and a normal-metal (Al) tuning circuit to achieve an uncorrected receiver noise temperature of 840 K (DSB) at 1042 GHz. Here we present results on several different device designs, which together cover the 300-1200 GHz frequency range. The mixers utilize an antireflection-coated silicon hyper-hemispherical lens, a twin-slot antenna, and a two-junction tuning circuit. The broad-band frequency response was measured using Fourier transform spectrometry (FTS), and is in good agreement with model calculations. Heterodyne tests were carried out from 400 GHz up to 1040 GHz, and these measurements agree well with the FTS results and with calculations based on Tucker's theory (1985)
Reaching the hydrodynamic regime in a Bose-Einstein condensate by suppression of avalanche
We report the realization of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the
hydrodynamic regime. The hydrodynamic regime is reached by evaporative cooling
at a relative low density suppressing the effect of avalanches. With the
suppression of avalanches a BEC containing 120.10^6 atoms is produced. The
collisional opacity can be tuned from the collisionless regime to a collisional
opacity of more than 3 by compressing the trap after condensation. In the
collisional opaque regime a significant heating of the cloud at time scales
shorter than half of the radial trap period is measured. This is direct proof
that the BEC is hydrodynamic.Comment: Article submitted for Phys. Rev. Letters, 6 figure
Frequency shifts of photoassociative spectra of ultracold metastable Helium atoms : a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length
We observe light-induced frequency shifts in one-color photoassociative
spectra of magnetically trapped He atoms in the metastable
state. A pair of ultracold spin-polarized helium atoms is excited into
a molecular bound state in the purely long range potential connected to
the asymptote. The shift arises from the optical coupling of
the molecular excited bound state with the scattering states and the bound
states of two colliding atoms. We measure the frequency-shifts for
several ro-vibrational levels in the potential and find a linear
dependence on the photoassociation laser intensity. Comparison with a
theoretical analysis provides a good indication for the s-wave scattering
length of the quintet () potential, nm, which
is significantly lower than most previous results obtained by non-spectroscopic
methods.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
