    A pitiose é uma doença granulomatosa que atinge eqüinos, caninos, bovinos, felinos e humanos e ocorre em áreas tropicais, subtropicais ou temperadas (Meireles et al., 1993; Mendoza et al., 1996), causada pelo omiceto Pythium insidiosum (De Cock et al., 1987). A espécie eqüina é a mais atingida, principalmente nas formas cutânea e subcutânea, seguida dos caninos (Mendoza et al., 1996). A enfermidade em eqüinos caracteriza-se pela formação de granulomas eosinofílicos, com a presença de massas necróticas chamadas de kunkers (Mendoza e Alfaro, 1986; Meireles et al., 1993). Em humanos, a doença é mais comum no sudeste asiático, caracterizando-se por formas sistêmicas com arterites e também formas oftálmicas e subcutâneas, sendo as duas últimas associadas a a e b-talassemias (Imwidthaya, 1994; Imwidthaya, 1995). Vários tratamentos têm sido utilizados, principalmente em eqüinos, incluindo tratamento químico (antifúngicos), cirúrgico e imunoterápico. A imunoterapia, proposta inicialmente por Miller (1981), surgiu como uma alternativa concreta para o controle da doença e tem apresentado resultados promissores (Monteiro, 1999).     Desorption Dynamics of Heavy Alkali Metal Atoms (Rb, Cs) off the Surface of Helium Nanodroplets

    We present a combined ion imaging and density functional theory study of the dynamics of the desorption process of rubidium and cesium atoms off the surface of helium nanodroplets upon excitation of the perturbed 6s6s and 7s7s states, respectively. Both experimental and theoretical results are well represented by the pseudodiatomic model for effective masses of the helium droplet in the desorption reaction of m_eff/m_He~10 (Rb) and 13 (Cs). Deviations from this model are found for Rb excited to the 6p state. Photoelectron spectra indicate that the dopant-droplet interaction induces relaxation into low-lying electronic states of the desorbed atoms in the course of the ejection process.Comment: in press, J.     Ultra Low-Power Analog Median Filters

    The design and implementation of three analog median filter topologies, whose transistors operate in the deep weak-inversion region, is described. The first topology is a differential pairs array, in which drain currents are driven into two nodes in a differential fashion, while the second topology is based on a wide range OTA, which is used to maximize the dynamic range. Finally, the third topology uses three range-extended OTAs. The proposed weak-inversion filters were designed and fabricated in ON Semiconductor 0.5 micrometer technology through MOSIS. Experimental results of three-input fabricated prototypes for all three topologies are show, where power consumptions of 90nW in the first case, and 270nW in the other two cases can be noticed. A dual power supply +/-1.5 Volts were used

    Aproveitamento das vagens de faveira como suplemento a silagem de sorgo na alimentação de bovinos.

    Avaliou-se a variação de peso de bovinos alimentados com silagem de sorgo (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) e suplementados com vagens de faveira (Parkia playtycephala Benth) inteiras e moidas. Foram utilizados 3 grupos de 5 bezeros, mestiços de zebu x holandês, com idade de 10 a 14 meses e peso vivo medio inicial de 175+-31 kg/animal. Os animais foram confinados em baias individuais, distribuidos ao acaso, tendo a disposição os alimentos, água e sal mineral. O primeiro grupo de animais recebeu somente silagem; o segundo, silagem mais vagens inteiras;e o terceiro, silagem mais vagens moidas. A duração do trabalho foi de 106 dias, sendo o periodo inicial de 22 dias, considerados de adaptação, e os 84 dias seguintes como de coleta de dados. Os animais foram pesados inicialmente e a cada 28 dias, após um jejum de 16 horas. Os ganhos medios diarios por bezerro foram de 210 g. para os animais suplementados com vagens moidas, l99 g, para os animais suplementados com vagens inteiras, e não houve variação de peso dos animais alimentados somente com silagem. A análise estatistica destes resultados apresentou diferença significativa (P 0,05), sendo o tratamento silagem mais vagens moidas superior aos tratamento com somente silagem. O ganho de peso do grupo de animais suplementado com vagens moidas foi 76,3% superior ao suplementado com vagens inteiras, mas esta diferença não foi estatisticamente significativa ao nivel de 5% de probabilidade.bitstream/item/98425/1/BOL70001.pd

    Optimization of fMRI Processing Parameters for Simutaneous Acquisition of EEG/fMRI in Focal Epilepsy

    In the context of focal epilepsy, the simultaneous combination of electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) holds a great promise as a technique by which the hemodynamic correlates of interictal spikes detected on scalp EEG can be identified. The fact that traditional EEG recordings have not been able to overcome the difficulty in correlating the ictal clinical symptoms to the onset in particular areas of the lobes, brings the need of mapping with more precision the epileptogenic cortical regions. On the other hand, fMRI suggested localizations more consistent with the ictal clinical manifestations detected. This study was developed in order to improve the knowledge about the way parameters involved in the physical and mathematical data, produced by the EEG/fMRI technique processing, would influence the final results. The evaluation of the accuracy was made by comparing the BOLD results with: the high resolution EEG maps; the malformative lesions detected in the T1 weighted MR images; and the anatomical localizations of the diagnosed symptomatology of each studied patient. The optimization of the set of parameters used, will provide an important contribution to the diagnosis of epileptogenic focuses, in patients included on an epilepsy surgery evaluation program. The results obtained allowed us to conclude that: by associating the BOLD effect with interictal spikes, the epileptogenic areas are mapped to localizations different from those obtained by the EEG maps representing the electrical potential distribution across the scalp (EEG); there is an important and solid bond between the variation of particular parameters (manipulated during the fMRI data processing) and the optimization of the final results, from which smoothing, deleted volumes, HRF (used to convolve with the activation design), and the shape of the Gamma function can be certainly emphasized

    Comparison of Methods and Co-Registration Maps of EEG and fMRI in Occipital Lobe Epilepsy

    Clinically childhood occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) manifests itself with distinct syndromes. The traditional EEG recordings have not been able to overcome the difficulty in correlating the ictal clinical symptoms to the onset in particular areas of the occipital lobes. To understand these syndromes it is important to map with more precision the epileptogenic cortical regions in OLE. Experimentally, we studied three idiopathic childhood OLE patients with EEG source analysis and with the simultaneous acquisition of EEG and fMRI, to map the BOLD effect associated with EEG spikes. The spatial overlap between the EEG and BOLD results was not very good, but the fMRI suggested localizations more consistent with the ictal clinical manifestations of each type of epileptic syndrome. Since our first results show that by associating the BOLD effect with interictal spikes the epileptogenic areas are mapped to localizations different from those calculated from EEG sources and that by using different EEG/fMRI processing methods our results differ to some extent, it is very important to compare the different methods of processing the localization of activation and develop a good methodology for obtaining co-registration maps of high resolution EEG with BOLD localizations

    Reversible Photorheology in Solutions of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide, Salicylic Acid, and trans-2,4,4 '-Trihydroxychalcone

    We show photorheology in aqueous solutions of weakly entangled wormlike micelles prepared with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), salicylic acid (HSal), and dilute amounts of the photochromic multistate compound trans-2,4,4'-trihydroxychalcone (Ct). Different chemical species of Ct are associated with different colorations and propensities to reside within or outside CTAB micelles. A light-induced transfer between the intra- and intermicellar space is used to alter the mean length of wormlike micelles and hence the rheological properties of the fluid, studied in steady-state shear Bow and in dynamic rheological measurements. Light-induced changes of fluid rheology are reversible by a the relaxation process. at relaxation rates which depend on pH and which are consistent with photochromic reversion rates measured by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Parameterizing viscoelostic rheological states by their effective relaxation time tau(c) and corresponding response modulus G(c), we find the light and dark states of the system to fall onto a characteristic state curve defined by comparable experiments conducted without photosensitive components. These reference experiments were prepared with the same concentration of CTAB, but different concentrations of HSal or sodium salicylote (NaSal), and tested at different temperatures

    Competição de cultivares de arroz de sequeiro em diferentes épocas de plantio em Rondônia.

    Procura identificar plantios em diferentes epocas, cultivares mais produtivas e melhor adaptaveis. Os experimentos foram conduzidos nas bases fisicas de Porto Velho e Ouro Preto-RO. Utilizou-se delineamento de bloco casualisado, com tres repeticoes. Foram utizadas dez cultivares: IAC-25, IAC-47, IAC-5100, IAC-5544, Chatao, Bico Ganga, IAC-1131, IAC-1246, Pratao precoce e A-19, provenientes da EMBRAPA-CNPAF. Fez-se necessario substituir a cultivar Agulhinha, EEA-409, Dawn, IR-665,14.3.5, P-723-6.3.1 e Cica-4 usadas no ano anterior, pelas seis primeiras das acima citadas, decorrentes do comportamento insatisfatorio para as condicoes locais. Constatou-se a presenca de brusone (Pyricularia orizae Cav.), com baixa incidencia, nas cuiltivares de IAC-25, IAC-5100,IAC-5544, Bico ganga, Pratao precoce e A-19. Concluiu-se que em Ouro Preto as cultivares que se destacaram foram IAC-47, Bico ganga, IAC-1246 e a cultivar que menos acamou foi IAC-47. Observou-se que a partir da segunda quinzena de out., o acamamento diminui, havendo porem uma inluencia negativa na producao.bitstream/item/58759/1/COT-1130-0001.pd
