Improved Estimates of Cosmological Perturbations
We recently derived exact solutions for the scalar, vector and tensor mode
functions of a single, minimally coupled scalar plus gravity in an arbitrary
homogeneous and isotropic background. These solutions are applied to obtain
improved estimates for the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra of

Chronic Stress, Sense of Belonging, and Depression Among Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury
To test whether chronic stress, interpersonal relatedness, and cognitive burden could explain depression after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Design : A nonprobability sample of 75 mild-to-moderately injured TBI survivors and their significant others, were recruited from five TBI day-rehabilitation programs. All participants were within 2 years of the date of injury and were living in the community. Methods : During face-to-face interviews, demographic information, and estimates of brain injury severity were obtained and participants completed a cognitive battery of tests of directed attention and short-term memory, responses to the Perceived Stress Scale, Interpersonal Relatedness Inventory, Sense of Belonging Instrument, Neurobehavioral Functioning Inventory, and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale;. Findings : Chronic stress was significantly and positively related to post-TBI depression. Depression and postinjury sense of belonging were negatively related. Social support and results from the cognitive battery did not explain depression. Conclusions : Postinjury chronic stress and sense of belonging were strong predictors of post-injury depression and are variables amenable to interventions by nurses in community health, neurological centers, or rehabilitation clinics. Development of a genomics-based LAMP (Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification) assay for detection of Pseudomonas fuscovaginae from rice
The vast amount of data available through next-generation sequencing technology is facilitating the design of diagnostic marker systems. This study reports the use of draft genome sequences from the bacterial plant pathogen Pseudomonas fuscovaginae, the cause of sheath brown rot of rice, to describe the genetic diversity within a worldwide collection of strains representing the species. Based on a comparative analysis with the draft sequences, primers for a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay were developed to identify P. fuscovaginae. The assay reported here reliably differentiated strains of P. fuscovaginae isolated from rice from a range of other bacteria that are commonly isolated from rice and other plants using a primer combination designated Pf8. The LAMP assay identified P. fuscovaginae purified DNA, live or heat-killed cells from pure cultures, and detected the bacterium in extracts or exudates from infected host plant material. The P. fuscovaginae LAMP assay is a suitable diagnostic tool for the glasshouse and laboratory and could be further developed for in-field surveys
Extracellular buffer choice influences acid-base responses and gastrointestinal symptoms:Buffers and GI responses
Aim: To compare the pharmokinetic and gastrointestinal (GI) symptom responses between an equal dose of sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate using delayed-release capsules. Methods: Thirteen active males (age 20.5 ± 2.1 y, height 1.82 ± 0.1 m and body mass 76.5 ± 9.6 kg) consumed either 0.3 g.kg1 BM sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate or a placebo, using a double-blind, randomised crossover design. Blood bicarbonate [HCO3–]) concentration, pH and GI symptoms were measured pre-ingestion and every 10 min for 180 min post-consumption. Results: [HCO3–] concentration (P < 0.001) and pH (P = 0.040) were significantly higher in the sodium bicarbonate condition compared with sodium citrate condition up to 3 h post-consumption. Peak blood HCO3–concentration was significantly higher with sodium bicarbonate compared with citrate (P < 0.001). Mean GI symptom scores were lower (P = 0.037) for sodium citrate (1.5 ± 1.8 AU) than bicarbonate (2.6 ± 3.1 AU), with considerable inter individual variability. No GI symptoms were reported following consumption of the placebo. Conclusion: Both substances alter [HCO] values significantly, with sodium bicarbonate causing significantly higher pH and [HCO3-] values than the same dose of sodium citrate, but results in slightly more severe GI sympto
