    12CO emission from EP Aqr: Another example of an axi-symmetric AGB wind?

    The CO(1-0) and (2-1) emission of the circumstellar envelope of the AGB star EP Aqr has been observed using the IRAM PdBI and the IRAM 30-m telescope. The line profiles reveal the presence of two distinct components centered on the star velocity, a broad component extending up to ~10 km/s and a narrow component indicating an expansion velocity of ~2 km/s. An early analysis of these data was performed under the assumption of isotropic winds. The present study revisits this interpretation by assuming instead a bipolar outflow nearly aligned with the line of sight. A satisfactory description of the observed flux densities is obtained with a radial expansion velocity increasing from ~2 km/s at the equator to ~10 km/s near the poles. The angular aperture of the bipolar outflow is ~45 deg with respect to the star axis, which makes an angle of ~13 deg with the line of sight. A detailed study of the CO(1-0) to CO(2-1) flux ratio reveals a significant dependence of the temperature on the star latitude, smaller and steeper at the poles than at the equator at large distances from the star. Under the hypothesis of radial expansion and of rotation invariance about the star axis, the effective density has been evaluated in space as a function of star coordinates. Evidence is found for an enhancement of the effective density in the northern hemisphere of the star at angular distances in excess of ~3" and covering the whole longitudinal range. The peak velocity of the narrow component is observed to vary slightly with position on the sky, a variation consistent with the model and understood as the effect of the inclination of the star axis with respect to the line of sight. While the phenomenological model presented here reproduces well the general features of the observations, significant differences are also revealed, which would require a better spatial resolution to be properly described.Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Ability of Dental Students to Deliver Oxygen in a Medical Emergency

    This study was conducted to evaluate the ability of dental students to administer emergency oxygen to a patient during a simulated emergency. Forty third‐year (D3) and fourth‐year (D4) dental students were recruited and asked to demonstrate their ability in managing a simulated angina attack. Students were tested on their knowledge related to emergency medical protocols, the time taken to obtain oxygen, and operation of the oxygen equipment. Of the subjects tested, 68 percent independently identified the need for oxygen and the correct location of the equipment in the dental school. Only 15 percent of the students completed the experiment within a predetermined optimal time frame, and 50 percent of all students did not successfully operate the tank regulator to administer oxygen correctly. Although most participants in the study were able to verbalize the proper protocol for managing medical emergencies, the chairside execution in this situation demonstrates room for improvement.     Effect of Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction on Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chain in a longitudinal magnetic field

    Using functional integral method for the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chain with the added Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field, we find out expression for free energy of the spin chain via spin fluctuations, from which quantities characterize the antiferromagnetic order and phase transition such as staggered and total magnetizations derived. From that, we deduce the significant effect of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the reduction of the antiferromagnetic order and show that the total magnetization can be deviated from the initial one under the influence of canting of the spins due to a combination of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the magnetic field. Besides, the remarkable role of the transverse spin fluctuations due to the above factors on the antiferromagnetic behaviours of the spin chain is also indicated. &nbsp

    Interplay between residual protease activity in commercial lactases and the subsequent digestibility of β-casein in a model system

    One of the conventional ways to produce lactose-hydrolyzed (LH) milk is via the addition of commercial lactases into heat-treated milk in which lactose is hydrolyzed throughout storage. This post-hydrolysis method can induce proteolysis in milk proteins due to protease impurities remaining in commercial lactase preparations. In this work, the interplay between lactose hydrolysis, proteolysis, and glycation was studied in a model system of purified β-casein (β-CN), lactose, and lactases using peptidomic methods. With a lactase presence, the proteolysis of β-CN was found to be increased during storage. The protease side-activities mainly acted on the hydrophobic C-terminus of β-CN at Ala, Pro, Ile, Phe, Leu, Lys, Gln, and Tyr positions, resulting in the formation of peptides, some of which were N-terminal glycated or potentially bitter. The proteolysis in β-CN incubated with a lactase was shown to act as a kind of “pre-digestion”, thus increasing the subsequent in vitro digestibility of β-CN and drastically changing the peptide profiles of the in vitro digests. This model study provides a better understanding of how the residual proteases in commercial lactase preparations affect the quality and nutritional aspects of β-CN itself and could be related to its behavior in LH milk

    Evaluation of the major seed storage proteins, the conglutins, across genetically diverse narrow-leafed lupin varieties

    Lupin seeds have an excellent nutritional profile, including a high proportion of protein and dietary fiber. These qualities make lupin seeds an ideal candidate to help meet the growing global demand for complementary sources of protein. Of consequence to this application, there are nutritional and antinutritional properties assigned to the major lupin seed storage proteins—referred to as α-, β-, δ- and γ-conglutins The variation in the abundance of these protein families can impact the nutritional and bioactive properties of different lupin varieties. Hence, exploring the conglutin protein profiles across a diverse range of lupin varieties will yield knowledge that can facilitate the selection of superior genotypes for food applications or lupin crop improvement. To support this knowledge generation, discovery proteomics was applied for the identification of the 16 known conglutin subfamilies from 46 domestic and wild narrow-leafed lupin (NLL) genotypes. Consequently, the diversity of abundance of these proteins was evaluated using liquid chromatography–multiple reaction monitoring-mass spectrometry (LC–MRM-MS). This comparative study revealed a larger variability for the β- and δ-conglutin content across the lines under study. The absence/lower abundance of the β2- to β6-conglutin subfamilies in a subset of the domesticated cultivars led to substantially lower overall levels of the allergenic β-conglutin content in these NLLs, for which the elevation of the other conglutin families were observed. The diversity of the conglutin profiles revealed through this study—and the identification of potential hypoallergenic genotypes—will have great significance for lupin allergic consumers, food manufactures as well as grain breeders through the future development of lupin varieties with higher levels of desirable bioactive proteins and lower allergen content

    An Investigation of Barriers to Adopt Green Innovation Among Manufacturing Organizations in Vietnam

    This research aims to identify the main barriers to green innovation in Vietnam manufacturing organizations. This study began by reviewing the relevant literature and providing a solid theoretical framework to understand the determinants of green innovation for manufacturing firms in the global context. It also helps internal and external stakeholders figure out what influence and how to implement green innovation more efficiently by removing all impediments. Additionally, this article is considered a valuable and rational evidence for prioritizing and directing innovation policies in the manufacturing industry. Based on numerical data from 143 employees at middleand upper-level managers among manufacturing companies around Vietnam, the study found that deficiency of financial resources primarily significantly impacts green innovation adoption, followed by the uncertainty of market demand and lack of government support. However, with limited observations, the investigation did not observe the dynamic effect of green innovation over periods and only focused on the manufacturing sector instead of different industries for generalizing the research results.     Effects of laccase and transglutaminase on the physicochemical and functional properties of hybrid lupin and whey protein powder

    Plant-based protein is considered a sustainable protein source and has increased in demand recently. However, products containing plant-based proteins require further modification to achieve the desired functionalities akin to those present in animal protein products. This study aimed to investigate the effects of enzymes as cross-linking reagents on the physicochemical and functional properties of hybrid plant- and animal-based proteins in which lupin and whey proteins were chosen as representatives, respectively. They were hybridised through enzymatic cross-linking using two laccases (laccase R, derived from Rhus vernicifera and laccase T, derived from Trametes versicolor) and transglutaminase (TG). The cross-linking experiments were conducted by mixing aqueous solutions of lupin flour and whey protein concentrate powder in a ratio of 1:1 of protein content under the conditions of pH 7, 40 °C for 20 h and in the presence of laccase T, laccase R, or TG. The cross-linked mixtures were freeze-dried, and the powders obtained were assessed for their cross-linking pattern, colour, charge distribution (ζ-potential), particle size, thermal stability, morphology, solubility, foaming and emulsifying properties, and total amino acid content. The findings showed that cross-linking with laccase R significantly improved the protein solubility, emulsion stability and foaming ability of the mixture, whereas these functionalities were lower in the TG-treated mixture due to extensive cross-linking. Furthermore, the mixture treated with laccase T turned brownish in colour and showed a decrease in total amino acid content which could be due to the enzyme’s oxidative cross-linking mechanism. Also, the occurrence of cross-linking in the lupin and whey mixture was indicated by changes in other investigated parameters such as particle size, ζ-potential, etc., as compared to the control samples. The obtained results suggested that enzymatic cross-linking, depending on the type of enzyme used, could impact the physicochemical and functional properties of hybrid plant- and animal-based proteins, potentially influencing their applications in food
