Structural Damage Prediction of a Reinforced Concrete Frame under Single and Multiple Seismic Events Using Machine Learning Algorithms
Advanced machine learning algorithms have the potential to be successfully applied to many areas of system modelling. In the present study, the capability of ten machine learning algorithms to predict the structural damage of an 8-storey reinforced concrete frame building subjected to single and successive ground motions is examined. From this point of view, the initial damage state of the structural system, as well as 16 well-known ground motion intensity measures, are adopted as the features of the machine-learning algorithms that aim to predict the structural damage after each seismic event. The structural analyses are performed considering both real and artificial ground motion sequences, while the structural damage is expressed in terms of two overall damage indices. The comparative study results in the most efficient damage index, as well as the most promising machine learning algorithm in predicting the structural response of a reinforced concrete building under single or multiple seismic events. Finally, the configured methodology is deployed in a user-friendly web application. Keywords: seismic sequence; machine learning algorithms; repeated earthquakes; structural damage prediction; intensity measures; damage accumulation; machine learning; artificial neural networ

In the present work, a correlation is made between seismic intensity parameters and total damage indicators of reinforced concrete structures. For this purpose, natural ground motions recordings were used, from which intensity measures were calculated and alternatives were proposed. Then, through dynamic inelastic time history analyzes, damage indices were evaluated for 1st and 2nd order theory (P-Delta effects). The correlation between each seismic parameter and the corresponding damage index was made through polynomial regressions. Seismic parameters that do not take into account the characteristics of the building, showed a minimal or moderate correlation, while spectral parameters of velocities and energies explain the change of damage indices in percentages above 80 or even 90 per cent.Στην παρούσα εργασία πραγματοποιείται συσχέτιση μεταξύ σεισμικών παραμέτρων έντα-σης και ολικών δεικτών βλάβης σε κατασκευές οπλισμένου σκυροδέματος.

Structural Damage Prediction Under Seismic Sequence Using Neural Networks
Advanced machine learning algorithms, such as neural networks, have the potential to be successfully applied to many areas of system modelling. Several studies have been already conducted on forecasting structural damage due to individual earthquakes, ignoring the influence of seismic sequences, using neural networks. In the present study, an ensemble neural network approach is applied to predict the final structural damage of an 8-storey reinforced concrete frame under real and artificial ground motion sequences. Successive earthquakes consisted of two seismic events are utilised. We considered 16 well-known ground motion intensity measures and the structural damage that occurred by the first earthquake as the features of the machine-learning problem, while the final structural damage was the target. After the first seismic events and after the seismic sequences, both actual values of damage indices are calculated through nonlinear time history analysis. The machine-learning model is trained using the dataset generated from artificial sequences. Finally, the predictive capacity of the fitted neural network is accessed using the natural seismic sequences as a test set
Economic Comparison of HVAC and HVDCSolutions for Large Offshore Wind Farms underSpecial Consideration of Reliability
An economic comparison of several HVAC-HVDC transmission systems from large offshore windfarms is presented. The power output from the offshore windfarm is modeled by an aggregated power curve. The transmission cost for several transmission systems is calculated for a wide range of windfarms rated powers, transmission distances and average wind speeds. Energy losses, energy availability and investment costs constitute the input parameters to the study. For the calculation of the energy availability an algorithm that takes in account the aggregated model of the windfarm and the probability distribution of the wind speed is introduced. The availability study is based on statistical data concerning the reliability of the components of HVAC-HVDC transmission systems
Creating a Configuration Security Layer for Embedded Devices: A research-based on the case study of a widely used Embedded Device
As software security expert Bruce Schneier argues, the pervasive vulnerability of embedded systems today is structurally similar to the security crisis of PCs in the mid-1990s—only much worse. Embedded devices are ideal malware targets for several reasons. Firstly, Internet-connected devices are inherently more exposed to remote exploitation. Furthermore, embedded systems are notoriously difficult to update, regularly leading to unpatched vulnerabilities. Last but not least, many such devices operate in a mostly unattended fashion, which means that the timely discovery of compromise is unlikely. Hardening is the process of securing a system by reducing its surface of vulnerability. Hardening of the already deployed embedded devices that are connected to the internet is examined in this research. A method capable of automatically generating and enforcing security configuration based on the embedded system’s set of functions has been designed and implemented. The proposed system is dynamic, automatic, and seamless. Hardening level of such devices is measured through recognized security benchmarks. The objective is to harden the product as much as possible while maintaining its full functionality. This study concerns embedded systems using custom Linux-distribution software. The thesis was conducted in cooperation with Atos. OpenScape Business series X (OSBiz X) was used as a case study. OSBiz X is an embedded system used as a telephony center, with more than 150.000 systems already deployed worldwide. Implementing the system described above on OSBiz X significantly increased the hardening-level of the product while its functionality remained intact. Due to the case study’s scenario results, Atos plans to integrate the proposed system into the next version of OSBiz X’s official release. Finally, ongoing research about other internal organization’s products that could greatly benefit from this approach is being conducted.Electrical Engineer | Embedded System
Study of the echogenicity of the endometrium and the cervix of the uterus, during estrous cycle, pregnancy and parturition of Chios ewes
The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible fluctuations of echogenicity of the cervix and the endometrium during estrous cycle, pregnancy and the last 5 days before parturition in ewes. Before the commencement of the main study, two preliminary studies were conducted to evaluate the reliability and repeatability of the applied method. Results of these studies showed that the method had a high repeatability effect and is not influenced by the factors “examiner” and “animal”.For the main part of the study 37 Chios breed ewes, separated in three groups, were overall used. The animals of group 1 (16 ewe lambs) were examined for two consecutive estrous cycles, while animals of group 2 (12 ewes) and group 3 (9 ewes) were examined from the first day of gestation until lambing.Ultrasonographic examination and blood sample collection was conducted in all ewes, in specific days, according to their reproductive status. For the ultrasonographic examination the transrectal approach was selected. A linear array probe with a frequency of 7,5 MHz was selected. Serum progesterone concentrations were estimated with the method of RIA. The echogenicity analysis was based on the extraction of 17 statistical parameters with the use of the software EchoVet 2.0. The statistical analysis included the correlation of echogenicity variation with the progesterone, as well as the variations of all the image parameters examined throughout the experiment. In addition, the effect of the factors, “number of birth” and “number of lambs born” in echogenicity were investigated. For the period before the parturition, an extra factor “day”, was evaluated. Due to the fact that the experimental design of the study involved longitudinal data (repeated measurements), the Linear Mixed Effects (LME) modeling was utilized. No correlation of the echogenicity with the variation of the progesterone was noted, in any of the periods examined. During the period until the 35th day after mating, two of the parameters, the “run-length distribution” and the “gray value distribution” had significant variation, which correlated with histological changes of the cervix and the endometrium. For the 5-day sequence before parturition the parameters “st. deviation” for the cervix and “mean value”, “skewness” and “excess” for the endometrium were affected by the “day” factor. This effect was highly correlated with the histological changes of the cervix and the endometrium before parturition. In all periods there was a noted effect to the echogenicity by the factor “number of birth” for several of the echogenicity parameters. In conclusion, the echogenicity analysis is a useful method for the investigation of the genital tract of the ewes. The parameters that had significant variation during time, can be used for the diagnosis of the early gestation and the prediction of the time of the parturition. The rest of the echogenicity parameters that showed variation during time should be further investigated, for possible correlation between those parameters and the histological changes of the reproductive track.Στην παρούσα διατριβή διερευνήθηκε η διακύμανση στην ηχογένεια του τραχήλου της μήτρας και του ενδομητρίου κατά τη διάρκεια του ωοθηκικού κύκλου, της κυοφορίας (πρώιμης και προχωρημένης) και 5 ημέρες πριν από τον τοκετό.
