He begins his study with the days of early settlement by Anglos in the Stephen F. Austin Colony in southeast Texas and includes the war with Mexico, the Civil War, and the burgeoning of the cattle kingdom.     Eric J. Leed postulates a theory of restraint and release as formative forces in the trenches of the European fronts. I examine F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel The Great Gatsby for its portrayal of release that is tied to the presence of automobile “accidents.” These events emblematize the suppressed memory of mechanized violence. My first chapter addresses Gatsby and his fantasy of release in pursuing Daisy and the implications of release for morality in the post-war world. My second chapter is concerned with Tom Buchanan, whose traditional ideas about “civilization” are juxtaposed with the mechanistic violence of his defense of those ideals. My third chapter explores the relationships the novel’s characters possess to the automobile as a character, and further, how automobility enables release. My conclusion will synthesize the evidence in Fitzgerald’s novel to make observations about the disconnect, forged out of a new age of mechanized warfare, between individuals and their actions

The skymap produced by this process may be used for source detection or identification.     SiC Particles from Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars: Mg Burning and the s-Process

    The question of whether isotopically anomalous SiC particles found in meteorites originate in AGB stars is addressed. It is shown that if the peak helium shell flash temperatures of massive (6-9 solar masses) stars are about 10 percent larger than they are normally assumed to be, alpha particle reactions with the magnesium will become significant. Then the (Mg-29)(alpha, n)Si-29 reaction produces a large excess of Si-29. With a light element nuclear reaction network, the evolution of the silicon isotopic composition during AGB evolution is calculated. It is found that the experimentally determined correlation between excess Si-29 and excess Si-30 in SiC particles from carbonaceous chondrites can indeed be naturally produced in this way. It is suggested that if the large isotopically anomalous SiC particles carrying nearly pure-process krypton and xenon do indeed originate in AGB stars, those stars were massive and had peak shell flash temperatures near 450 KM

    Addressing the IS Enrollment Crisis: A 12-step Program to Bring about Change through the Introductory IS Course

    An enrollment crisis continues to plague the Information Systems (IS) discipline. Although recent studies have begun to offer several potentially profitable strategies to reverse plummeting student enrollments, little evidence has been put forth to document comprehensive intervention initiatives aimed at attracting students in higher education institutions. To this end, this study describes a 12-step program targeted at the introductory IS course at one such institution. Developed based on empirical evidence from the literature, discussions with our IS colleagues, and best practices at other institutions, the 12-step program covers all aspects of the course including faculty assignment, tenor and approaches used in class, and innovative ways to tell the IS story. As a result of implementing the program, enrollments in core upper-division IS courses at the institution doubled. This paper presents a powerful, integrated program that is replicable and can be used by other IS departments to address the enrollment crisis at their institutions
