Topical 1% Nalbuphine on corneal sensivity and epitheilization after experimental lamellar keratectomy in rabbits
The present study was aimed to evaluate the effects of topical 1% nalbuphine on corneal sensitivity and re-epithelialization, after lamellar keratectomy in rabbits. All protocols were approved by the Animal Care Comission of São Paulo State University (Protocol 028793-08) and were conducted in accordance with the Institutional Animal Committee and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) statement for the use of animals in research. Surgeries were performed on the left eye (Nalbuphine Group) and on the right eye (Control Group). Two groups were formed (n=10) and corneas received either 30µl of 1% nalbuphine (NG) or 30µl of 0,9% saline (CG). Treatments occurred at 7, 11, 15 and 19 hours. After the surgery, the corneas were stained with fluorescein and photographed daily; corneal touch threshold (CTT) was assessed with Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer, at 7 and 19 hours, 20 minutes after treatments. Data were statistically compared with repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post-hoc test, and T test (P0.05); however, a higher area under the curve for both parameters was observed in the NG (2771), in comparison to CG (2164). O limiar de sensibilidade e a área ulcerada foram comparados ao teste de Bonferroni, após ANOVA de medias repetidas (P0,05), todavia, constatou-se maior área sob a curva, relativamente ao LSC, no GN (2771), comparativamente ao GC (2164). O tempo médio±DP de reepitelização no GN foi de 7,40±0,47 dias e de 8,90±0,31 dias no GC, não havendo diferença significativa entre os grupos (P=0,11). Como conclusão, tem-se que o uso tópico de nalbufina 1% não alterou significativamente o limiar de sensibilidade e a reepitelização corneais em coelhos submetidos a ceratectomia lamelar experimental

Metastatic intraocular chondrosarcoma in a dog
Chondrosarcoma accounts for about 10% of all canine bone tumors and is the second most common primary bone tumor in dogs. In veterinary medicine, chondrosarcomas are classified as skeletal and extraskeletal. Extraskeletal chondrosarcomas are mesenchymal neoplasms of soft tissues and visceral organs that produce neoplastic chondrocytes in a fibrillary matrix. There is no involvement of bone or periosteal tissues in extraskeletal chondrosarcomas. Uveitis associated to the infection by Leishmania chagasi in dog from the Olinda city, Pernambuco, Brazil
Among the parasitic diseases, Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) is included in the systemic illnesses of chronic evolution that attack men and dogs, presenting varied clinical manifestations as cachexia, dermatologic lesions, peripheral lymphadenopathies, besides the ocular lesions. This work report the case of a dog clinically suspected of having CVL, presenting skin lesions, cachexia, gryphosis, and ocular signs of uveitis. The parasitological diagnosis was accomplished for Canine Leishmaniasis through the visualization of amastigote forms of Leishmania chagasi in smears of bone marrow fluid aspirate, of non-lesioned, and lesioned skin. A HISTOPATHOLOGIC AND IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL COMPARISON OF CORNEAL TISSUE FROM HORSES THAT WERE SEROPOSITIVE AND SERONEGATIVE FOR LEPTOSPIROSIS
ABSTRACT Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU) is the most common cause of blindness in horses. Leptospirosis has long been cited as a cause of ERU, particularly Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona. Horses infected with the bacterium present several disorders, including uveitis, which alters the composition of the aqueous humor and impedes the nutrition of ocular structures, resulting in sequelae, such as iris atrophy, synechiae, and corneal opacity. Previous studies have demonstrated that the opacity in both the cornea and lens is a consequence of the antigenic relationship between the bacteria and components of the ocular tissues and does not require the presence of living bacteria. In this study, a random sampling of horses from an abattoir that were seropositive animals for leptospirosis exhibited corneal thickness that was significantly higher than the seronegative animals (p = 0.0347). During immunohistochemistry, the anti-metalloproteinase 1 (anti-MMP1) of seropositive animals exhibited statistically significant results when compared to the area of immunohistochemistry reaction in seronegative animals (p = 0008). Seropositive individuals had altered corneas (increased thickness); therefore, inhibitory mechanisms of tissue metalloproteinases (TIMPs) in the cornea may be activated in order to prevent the degradation of corneal tissue during inflammation, resulting in the smallest reaction area of MMP1 in seropositive horses and a greater area in the seronegative individuals
Effects of different mydriatics on intraocular pressure, pupil diameter, and ruminal and intestinal motility in healthy sheep
Objective To determine the effects of the administration of subconjunctival 1% atropine (SA), topical 1% atropine (A), 0.5% tropicamide (T), 1% homatropine (H), 10% phenylephrine (P), and 2% ibopamine (I) on intraocular pressure (IOP), pupil diameter (PD), ruminal motility (RM) and intestinal motility (IM) in sheep.Animal studied Ten spayed ewes of Santa Ines breed.Procedures Six experiments were performed separately at 1-week intervals. One eye was randomly selected and received one drop of A, T, H, P, I, or subconjunctival injection of atropine at 8 a. m. On the following days, IOP and PD were evaluated every 8 h until the pupil returned to its normal diameter. Ruminal motility and intestinal motility were evaluated only within the first 13 h.Results The IOP did not change significantly in the treated eyes compared with the control eyes and baseline at any time point (P > 0.05). A longer-lasting pupil dilation was observed after the administration of A (96 h), SA (79 h), H (24 h), and T (24 h). Within the first 30 min after treatment, RM and IM decreased, by 78% and 82% (H), 76% and 86% (SA), 46% and 58% (A), and 62% and 70% (T) (P 0.05).Conclusions Topical and subconjunctival 1% atropine, 0.5% tropicamide, and 1% homatropine significantly reduced RM and IM, and induced pupil dilation but did not change IOP in eyes of healthy sheep. The sympathomimetics phenylephrine (10%) and ibopamine (2%) did not change the parameters evaluated
Proteomic analysis of dog tears for potential cancer markers
The first reference map of the proteome of pooled normal dog tears was created using 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the identity of a number of the major species determined using matrix-assisted laser desorption time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) and peptide mass fingerprint matching on protein sequence databases. In order to understand the changes in protein expression in the tear film of dogs with cancer, tears from such animals were similarly examined. A number of differences were found between the tears of healthy dogs and the dogs with cancer. Differences were found in levels of actin and albumin and in an unidentified protein which may be analogous to human lacryglobulin. These findings suggest that it may be possible to develop tear film analysis to provide a simple non-invasive test for the diagnosis and/or management of canine cancers. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Repercussões oculares do bloqueio retrobulbar com diferentes anestésicos locais em cães normais
The objective of this study was to evaluate the ocular effects, the feasibility and the quality of retrobulbar block using the inferior temporal technique with different local anesthetics applied with the Tuohy epidural needle in dogs. Eight dogs were included in the experiment and each one was studied four times, with interval of 15 days between the treatments: Lido -2% lidocaine, Ropi - 0.75% ropivacaine, Bupi - 0.5% racemic bupivacaine and Levo - 0.75% levobupivacaine. Except for the ropivacaine, all of the local anesthetics contained epinephrine at 1: 200.000. The blocks were performed in the right eyes immediately after anesthetic induction, and the left eyes were not blocked and were used as controls. The intraocular pressure, tear production and corneal sensitivity were evaluated before any procedure (T0), 30 min after premedication (TMPA), 30 min after anesthetic induction (T30), after recovery from anesthesia (TREC), every 60 min up to 360 min and 12 and 24 h after the block. The pupil diameter was evaluated at the same time points, excepted at T0. The maximum pupillary dilatation was observed in Lido group at T120 followed by Ropi at TREC, and Bupi and Levo at T30. All of the anesthetics maintained eye pressure within acceptable levels for normal dogs and significantly reduced tear production. Tear production returned earliest in group Lido, followed by Bupi, Ropi and Levo. The corneal sensitivity returned earliest in group Lido, followed by Ropi, Bupi and Levo. The retrobulbar block using the temporal inferior technique proved to be feasible and safe, although lubrication of the ocular surface is suggested.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos oculares, a exequibilidade e qualidade do bloqueio retrobulbar pela técnica inferior temporal, em cães, com diferentes anestésicos locais empregando-se agulha epidural de Tuohy. Oito cães foram incluídos no experimento e cada um foi estudado quatro vezes, com intervalo de 15 dias entre os tratamentos: Lido - lidocaína a 2%; Ropi - ropivacaína a 0,5%, Bupi - bupivacaína racêmica a 0,5% e Levo - levobupivacaína a 0,75%. Com exceção da ropivacaína, todos os anestésicos continham epinefrina 1:200.000. Os bloqueios foram realizados nos olhos direitos dos animais imediatamente após a indução anestésica, e os olhos esquerdos, não bloqueados, foram utilizados como controle. Avaliou-se a pressão intraocular, a produção lacrimal e a sensibilidade corneal antes de qualquer procedimento (T0), 30 min após a medicação pré-anestésica (TMPA), 30 min após a indução anestésica (T30), após a recuperação da anestesia (TREC), a cada 60 min até 360 min e 12 e 24 h após o bloqueio. O diâmetro pupilar foi avaliado nos mesmos momentos, exceto no T0. A máxima dilatação pupilar foi observada no grupo Lido seguida pelos grupos Ropi, Bupi e Levo. Todos os anestésicos mantiveram a pressão ocular dentro dos níveis normais para cães e reduziram significativamente a produção lacrimal. A produção lacrimal retornou ao normal primeiramente no grupo Lido, seguida pelos grupos Bupi, Ropi e Levo. O retorno da sensibilidade corneal ocorreu primeiramente no grupo Lido, seguido pelos grupos Ropi, Bupi e Levo. O bloqueio retrobulbar pela técnica inferior temporal demonstrou ser exequível e seguro, embora o uso de lubrificantes oculares seja sugerid
Intraocular pressure, specular microscopy, and prostaglandin E-2 concentration in dogs with mature and hypermature cataract
This study aimed to evaluate and correlate intraocular pressure (IOP), endothelial cell density (CD), and hexagonality (HEX), and the aqueous humor prostaglandin E-2 (PGE(2)) concentration in dogs with mature (MG, n = 8) and hypermature (HG, n = 8) cataracts. Eight laboratory beagles with no ocular abnormalities were included as a control group (CG). The IOP was measured using a digital applanation tonometer. Noncontact specular microscopy was used to evaluate CD and HEX. Samples of aqueous humor were used to determine prostaglandin E-2 concentration using enzyme-linked immunoassay. Data were compared by ANOVA and Bonferroni's multiple comparison test, and possible correlations among the PGE(2) aqueous concentration and corneal endothelium cell parameters were assessed by Person's test (P 0.05). PGE(2) values did not correlate with IOP, CD, and HEX in any group (P > 0.05). Although there were a small number of dogs studied, our results demonstrated that cataract progression from mature to hypermature did not have a significant change in PGE(2) aqueous concentration, IOP, corneal endothelial cell count, or morphology. In addition, PGE(2) concentration was not correlated with parameters of the corneal endothelium or IOP in dogs with mature or hypermature cataracts
