Remote sensing of the atmosphere from environmental satellites
Various applications of satellite remote sensing of the earth are reviewed, including (1) the use of meteorological satellites to obtain photographic and radiometric data for determining weather conditions; (2) determination of the earth radiation budget from measurements of reflected solar radiation and emitted long wave terrestrial radiation; (3) the use of microwave imagery for measuring ice and snow cover; (4) LANDSAT visual and near infrared observation of floods and crop growth; and (5) the use of the Nimbus 4 backscatter ultraviolet instrument to measure total ozone and vertical ozone distribution. Plans for future activities are also discussed

Laboratory measurement of the pure rotational spectrum of vibrationally excited HCO^+ (v_2 = 1) by far-infrared laser sideband spectroscopy
Laboratory observations of the pure rotational spectrum of HCO^+ in its lowest excited bending state
(v_1, v^l_2 v_3)_= (0,1^1,0) are reported. Because of their severe excitation requirements, such vibrational satellites
and the high-J ground-state lines also measured here sample only hot, dense regions of matter in active molecular
cloud cores and circumstellar envelopes. As the HCO^+ abundance is tied directly to the gas fractional ionization, it is probable that the vibrationally excited formyl ion transitions will provide high-contrast
observations of shocked molecular material, rather than the more quiescent, radiatively heated gas surrounding
stellar sources detected with the few vibrationally excited neutral species observed to date
The effect of cattle slurry in combination with nitrate and the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide on in situ nitrous oxide and dinitrogen emissions
peer-reviewedA field study was conducted to determine the effect of the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (DCD) on N2O and N2 emissions after cattle slurry (CS) application in the presence of nitrate (NO3) fertiliser on seven different occasions (between March 2009 and March 2011). N2O emissions from CS in the presence of NO3 fertiliser were very high (0.4–8.7% of applied N) over a 20-day period, under mild moist conditions. Emissions were significantly larger from the CS treatment compared to an NH4+-N source, supplying the same rate of N as in the slurry. This study supports the view that organic fertilisers should not be applied at the same time as nitrate-based fertilisers, as significant increases in N2O emissions occur. The average N2O mole fraction (N2O/(N2O + N2)) over all seven application dates was 0.34 for CSNO3 compared to 0.24 for the NH4ClNO3 treatment, indicating the dominance of N2 emissions. The rate of nitrification in CSNO3 was slower than in NH4ClNO3, and DCD was found to be an effective nitrification inhibitor in both treatments. However, as N2O emissions were found to be predominantly associated with the NO3 pool, the effect of DCD in lowering N2O emissions is limited in the presence of a NO3 fertiliser. To obtain the maximum cost-benefit of DCD in lowering N2O emissions, under mild moist conditions, it should not be applied to a nitrate containing fertiliser (e.g. ammonium nitrate or calcium ammonium nitrate), and therefore the application of DCD should be restricted to ammonium-based organic or synthetic fertilisers.This research was funded by the Irish

Mesoscale simulations of surfactant dissolution and mesophase formation
The evolution of the contact zone between pure surfactant and solvent has
been studied by mesoscale simulation. It is found that mesophase formation
becomes diffusion controlled and follows the equilibrium phase diagram
adiabatically almost as soon as individual mesophases can be identified,

Atomic swelling upon compression
The hydrogen atom under the pressure of a spherical penetrable confinement
potential of a decreasing radius is explored, as a case study. A novel
counter-intuitive effect of atomic swelling rather than shrinking with
decreasing is unraveled, when reaches, and remains smaller
than, a certain critical value. Upon swelling, the size of the atom is shown to
increase by an order of magnitude, or more, compared to the size of the free
atom. Examples of changes of photoabsorption properties of confined hydrogen

DDT, global strategies, and a malaria control crisis in South America.
Malaria is reemerging in endemic-disease countries of South America. We examined the rate of real growth in annual parasite indexes (API) by adjusting APIs for all years to the annual blood examination rate of 1965 for each country. The standardized APIs calculated for Brazil, Peru, Guyana, and for 18 other malaria-endemic countries of the Americas presented a consistent pattern of low rates up through the late 1970s, followed by geometric growth in malaria incidence in subsequent years. True growth in malaria incidence corresponds temporally with changes in global strategies for malaria control. Underlying the concordance of these events is a causal link between decreased spraying of homes with DDT and increased malaria; two regression models defining this link showed statistically significant negative relationships between APIs and house-spray rates. Separate analyses of data from 1993 to 1995 showed that countries that have recently discontinued their spray programs are reporting large increases in malaria incidence. Ecuador, which has increased use of DDT since 1993, is the only country reporting a large reduction (61%) in malaria rates since 1993. DDT use for malaria control and application of the Global Malaria Control Strategy to the Americas should be subjects of urgent national and international debate. We discuss the recent actions to ban DDT, the health costs of such a ban, perspectives on DDT use in agriculture versus malaria control, and costs versus benefits of DDT and alternative insecticides

thereof, at magnetic lengths. This state is a version of the
Rezayi-Read state, and develops continuously into the state that is believed to
describe the observed metallic phase as . Furthermore, the
effective Landau level structure that emerges within the lowest Landau level
