Ultra Bright LED Light Injection Calibration System for MINOS
We describe here a proposal for a light injection calibration system for the
MINOS detectors based on ultra bright blue LEDs as the light source. We have
shown that these LEDs are bright enough to span over two orders of magnitude in
light intensity, commensurate with that expected in a single scintillator strip

How to Save a Life: The Effect of Message Format and Strength on Persuasiveness in Public Safety Messages
Public Safety messages aim to get important messages out to the general public. This study seeks to examine how message format and content are interconnected and the role they play within persuasion. The study is a 2x2 design, with the tested variables being central message versus peripheral message and text format versus video format. Participants will self-report interest level in the topic of toxins in household products before viewing a message on the topic, then self-report after. Results concluded that those with high initial interest were less persuaded than those with low initial interest, but central cues were more persuasive to those with high initial interest and peripheral cues were more persuasive to those with low initial interest
Nonlinear interplay of Alfven instabilities and energetic particles in tokamaks
The confinement of energetic particles (EP) is crucial for an efficient
heating of tokamak plasmas. Plasma instabilities such as Alfven Eigenmodes (AE)
can redistribute the EP population making the plasma heating less effective,
and leading to additional loads on the walls. The nonlinear dynamics of
toroidicity induced AE (TAE) is investigated by means of the global gyrokinetic
particle-in-cell code ORB5, within the NEMORB project. The nonperturbative
nonlinear interplay of TAEs and EP due to the wave-particle nonlinearity is
studied. In particular, we focus on the nonlinear modification of the
frequency, growth rate and radial structure of the TAE, depending on the
evolution of the EP distribution in phase space. For the ITPA benchmark case,
we find that the frequency increases when the growth rate decreases, and the
mode shrinks radially. This nonlinear evolution is found to be correctly
reproduced by means of a quasilinear model, namely a model where the linear
effects of the nonlinearly modified EP distribution function are retained.Comment: Submitted to Plasma Phys. Control. Fusio
Communicating about suburban deer management: Tailoring the message to the stakeholders
Public input plays an important role in selecting suburban deer management alternatives. Agencies often communicate with the public to ensure that citizens have accurate information when judging management alternatives. Research has shown that suburban residents evaluate deer management alternatives on the basis of different sets of criteria (e.g., effectiveness, humaneness, etc.). We explored whether people\u27s attitudes were more likely to be influenced by information if it addressed the criteria about which they were concerned. We conducted our research through two mail surveys of randomly selected residents of Irondequoit, New York, implemented 20 months apart. Some 512 people responded to both surveys. The first survey was used to: (1) determine those considerations respondents used to judge deer management alternatives; and (2) measure their attitudes toward contraception and other alternatives. We used these results to categorize respondents according to how important it was to them that a deer management method be: (1) effective; and (2) humane. The second survey contained a subset of questions from the first survey. Three versions of the second questionnaire were used, varying in the type of explanatory information contained: (1) effectiveness of contraception; (2) humaneness of contraception; or (3) neither topic. We used general linear models and logistic regression models to explore whether receiving effectiveness or humaneness information influenced attitudes toward contraception and whether the effect of the information was influenced by how important the concern described in the information was to respondents. We found that people were more likely to change their opinion about contraception if they received information addressing their concerns

Control in the technical societies: a brief history
By the time control engineering emerged as a coherent body of knowledge and practice (during and just after WW2) professional engineering societies had existed for many decades. Since control engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of the profession, new sections devoted to control were quickly established within the various existing technical societies. In addition, some new bodies devoted specifically or primarily to control were established. This article, a revised version of a paper presented at the IEEE 2009 Conference on the History of Technical Societies, describes how control engineering as a distinct branch of engineering became represented in technical societies in a number of countries
