Deformable Object Tracking with Gated Fusion
The tracking-by-detection framework receives growing attentions through the
integration with the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). Existing
tracking-by-detection based methods, however, fail to track objects with severe
appearance variations. This is because the traditional convolutional operation
is performed on fixed grids, and thus may not be able to find the correct
response while the object is changing pose or under varying environmental
conditions. In this paper, we propose a deformable convolution layer to enrich
the target appearance representations in the tracking-by-detection framework.
We aim to capture the target appearance variations via deformable convolution,
which adaptively enhances its original features. In addition, we also propose a
gated fusion scheme to control how the variations captured by the deformable
convolution affect the original appearance. The enriched feature representation
through deformable convolution facilitates the discrimination of the CNN
classifier on the target object and background. Extensive experiments on the
standard benchmarks show that the proposed tracker performs favorably against
state-of-the-art methods
Evolution and CNO yields of Z=10^-5 stars and possible effects on CEMP production
Our main goals are to get a deeper insight into the evolution and final fates
of intermediate-mass, extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. We also aim to
investigate their C, N, and O yields. Using the Monash University Stellar
Evolution code we computed and analysed the evolution of stars of metallicity Z
= 10^-5 and masses between 4 and 9 M_sun, from their main sequence until the
late thermally pulsing (super) asymptotic giant branch, TP-(S)AGB phase. Our
model stars experience a strong C, N, and O envelope enrichment either due to
the second dredge-up, the dredge-out phenomenon, or the third dredge-up early
during the TP-(S)AGB phase. Their late evolution is therefore similar to that
of higher metallicity objects. When using a standard prescription for the mass
loss rates during the TP-(S)AGB phase, the computed stars lose most of their
envelopes before their cores reach the Chandrasekhar mass, so our standard
models do not predict the occurrence of SNI1/2 for Z = 10^-5 stars. However, we
find that the reduction of only one order of magnitude in the mass-loss rates,
which are particularly uncertain at this metallicity, would prevent the
complete ejection of the envelope, allowing the stars to either explode as an
SNI1/2 or become an electron-capture SN. Our calculations stop due to an
instability near the base of the convective envelope that hampers further
convergence and leaves remnant envelope masses between 0.25 M_sun for our 4
M_sun model and 1.5 M_sun for our 9 M_sun model. We present two sets of C, N,
and O yields derived from our full calculations and computed under two
different assumptions, namely, that the instability causes a practically
instant loss of the remnant envelope or that the stars recover and proceed with
further thermal pulses. Our results have implications for the early chemical
evolution of the Universe.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Room temperature electron spin coherence in telecom-wavelength quaternary quantum wells
Time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy is used to monitor the room
temperature electron spin dynamics of optical telecommunication wavelength
AlInGaAs multiple quantum wells lattice-matched to InP. We found that electron
spin coherence times and effective g-factors vary as a function of aluminum
concentration. The measured electron spin coherence times of these multiple
quantum wells, with wavelengths ranging from 1.26 microns to 1.53 microns,
reach approximately 100 ps at room temperature, and the measured electron
effective g-factors are in the range from -2.3 to -1.1.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Analytic structure of radiation boundary kernels for blackhole perturbations
Exact outer boundary conditions for gravitational perturbations of the
Schwarzschild metric feature integral convolution between a time-domain
boundary kernel and each radiative mode of the perturbation. For both axial
(Regge-Wheeler) and polar (Zerilli) perturbations, we study the Laplace
transform of such kernels as an analytic function of (dimensionless) Laplace
frequency. We present numerical evidence indicating that each such
frequency-domain boundary kernel admits a "sum-of-poles" representation. Our
work has been inspired by Alpert, Greengard, and Hagstrom's analysis of
nonreflecting boundary conditions for the ordinary scalar wave equation.Comment: revtex4, 14 pages, 12 figures, 3 table
Nanofiltration of aerobically-treated palm oil mill effluent: Characterization of the size of colour compounds using synthetic dyes and polyethylene glycols
Membrane-based separation is one of the emerging technologies that have garnered significant interest in recent years for the treatment process of palm oil mill effluent (POME). As documented in the literature, different types of membrane processes such as ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) were used for the POME treatment and the efficiency of separation varied depending on the membrane properties. Unlike the previous works that used membranes to treat POME, the main focus of this current work is to utilize NF membrane to characterize the size of colour compounds in the aerobically-treated POME (AT-POME). Two different markers, i.e., synthetic dyes and polyethylene glycols (PEGs) with molecular weight (MW) in the range of 200-1000 g/mol were used to characterize the colour compounds in the AT-POME. Results showed that dyes are more suitable compared to PEGs for the characterization because dyes possessed negative charge similar as the colour compounds in the AT-POME. By using dyes as the markers, it was found that the size of the colour compounds in the AT-POME was at MW of 300-400 g/mol. Precise determination of the size of colour compounds in the AT-POME is of importance as it could provide useful information on the selection of ideal membrane properties (in particular pore size or molecular weight cut-off) to achieve complete solute separation
Fabrication and Characterization of Modulation-Doped ZnSe/(Zn,Cd)Se (110) Quantum Wells: A New System for Spin Coherence Studies
We describe the growth of modulation-doped ZnSe/(Zn,Cd)Se quantum wells on
(110) GaAs substrates. Unlike the well-known protocol for the epitaxy of
ZnSe-based quantum structures on (001) GaAs, we find that the fabrication of
quantum well structures on (110) GaAs requires significantly different growth
conditions and sample architecture. We use magnetotransport measurements to
confirm the formation of a two-dimensional electron gas in these samples, and
then measure transverse electron spin relaxation times using time-resolved
Faraday rotation. In contrast to expectations based upon known spin relaxation
mechanisms, we find surprisingly little difference between the spin lifetimes
in these (110)-oriented samples in comparison with (100)-oriented control
samples.Comment: To appear in Journal of Superconductivity (Proceedings of 3rd

The minimum energy expenditure shortest path method
This article discusses the addition of an energy parameter to the shortest path execution process; namely, the energy expenditure by a character during execution of the path. Given a simple environment in which a character has the ability to perform actions related to locomotion, such as walking and stair stepping, current techniques execute the shortest path based on the length of the extracted root trajectory. However, actual humans acting in constrained environments do not plan only according to shortest path criterion, they conceptually measure the path that minimizes the amount of energy expenditure. On this basis, it seems that virtual characters should also execute their paths according to the minimization of actual energy expenditure as well. In this article, a simple method that uses a formula for computing vanadium dioxide () levels, which is a proxy for the energy expenditure by humans during various activities, is presented. The presented solution could be beneficial in any situation requiring a sophisticated perspective of the path-execution process. Moreover, it can be implemented in almost every path-planning method that has the ability to measure stepping actions or other actions of a virtual character
