    Non-granulomatous Interstitial Nephritis in a Chinese Man with Sarcoidosis

    Clinical renal involvement in sarcoidosis is rare and has not been previously reported in Chinese patients. We report a case of non-granulomatous interstitial nephritis that presented with acute renal failure in a Chinese man with underlying sarcoidosis. Use of prednisolone led to dramatic renal improvement and partial resolution of his asymptomatic lung parenchymal lesions. Unfortunately, the patient subsequently died of cryptococcal meningitis and episodes of nosocomial pneumonia. One should closely monitor a patient with a presumptive diagnosis of sarcoidosis after embarking on treatment since infections like tuberculosis may mimic or coexist with the disease. This is particularly important in areas where sarcoidosis is exceedingly rare

    Achiral dielectric metasurfaces for spectral and polarization control of valley specific light emission from monolayer MoS2

    Excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides have a valley degree of freedom that can be optically accessed and manipulated for quantum information processing. Here, we integrate MoS2 with achiral silicon disk array metasurfaces to enhance and control valley-specific absorption and emission. Through the coupling to the metasurface Mie modes, the intensity and lifetime of the emission of neutral excitons, trions and defect bound excitons can be enhanced, while the spectral shape can be modified. Additionally, we demonstrate the symmetric enhancement of the degree-of-polarization (DOP) of neutral exciton and trions via valley-resolved PL measurements, and find that the DOP can be as high as 24% for exciton emission and 34% for trion emission at 100K. These results can be understood by analyzing the near-field impact of metasurface resonators on both the chiral absorption of MoS2 emitters as well as the enhanced emission from the Purcell effect. Combining Si-compatible photonic design with large-scale (mm-scale) 2D materials integration, our work makes an important step towards on-chip valleytronic applications approaching room-temperature operation

    Measurement agreement between a newly developed sensing insole and traditional laboratory-based method for footstrike pattern detection in runners

    This study introduced a novel but simple method to continuously measure footstrike patterns in runners using inexpensive force sensors. Two force sensing resistors were firmly affixed at the heel and second toe of both insoles to collect the time signal of foot contact. A total of 109 healthy young adults (42 males and 67 females) were recruited in this study. They ran on an instrumented treadmill at 0˚, +10˚, and -10˚ inclinations and attempted rearfoot, midfoot, and forefoot landings using real time visual biofeedback. Intra-step strike index and onset time difference between two force sensors were measured and analyzed with univariate linear regression. We analyzed 25,655 footfalls and found that onset time difference between two sensors explained 80–84% of variation in the prediction model of strike index (R-squared = 0.799–0.836, p<0.001). However, the time windows to detect footstrike patterns on different surface inclinations were not consistent. These findings may allow laboratory-based gait retraining to be implemented in natural running environments to aid in both injury prevention and performance enhancement

    Comparing hybrid and regular COVID-19 vaccine-induced immunity against the Omicron epidemic

    Evidence on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines among people who recovered from a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection is warranted to inform vaccination recommendations. Using the territory-wide public healthcare and vaccination records of over 2.5 million individuals in Hong Kong, we examined the potentially differential risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection, hospitalization, and mortality between those receiving two homologous doses of BNT162b2 or CoronaVac versus those with a previous infection receiving only one dose amid the Omicron epidemic. Results show a single dose after a SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with a lower risk of infection (BNT162b2: adjusted incidence rate ratio [IRR] = 0.475, 95% CI: 0.410–0.550; CoronaVac: adjusted IRR = 0.397, 95% CI: 0.309–0.511) and no significant difference was detected in the risk of COVID-19-related hospitalization or mortality compared with a two-dose vaccination regimen. Findings support clinical recommendations that those with a previous infection could receive a single dose to gain at least similar protection as those who received two doses without a previous infection
