Induction of male production in clones of Daphnia pulex by the juvenoid hormone methyl farnesoate under short photoperiod
The juvenile hormone, methyl farnesoate (MF), and its analog insecticides have been used successfully to induce the production of males in cladocerans under long-day conditions in the laboratory. However, without hormone addition Daphnia do not usually produce male offspring under long photoperiods, while short photoperiods are a stimulus for the induction of males. We used 21 clones of Daphnia pulex differing in their propensity to produce males under short-day conditions to test whether the treatment with MF would result in an additive effect of shifting the sex ratio towards males. Contrary to our expectations, clones with a high tendency of male production showed a reduced sex ratio in response to MF treatment under short-day conditions, but clones that produced normally few males or did not produce males were stimulated by 700 nM MF to produce up to 40% males. We suggest that the endocrine disruptive effect of MF or juvenile hormone analogs in the field may depend on the clonal composition of the cladoceran population and on the natural photoperiod. This may affect the seasonal occurrence of sexual reproduction and eventually cause a mismatch between the presence of males and ephippial females
The Molecular Line Opacity of MgH in Cool Stellar Atmospheres
A new, complete, theoretical rotational and vibrational line list for the A-X
electronic transition in MgH is presented. The list includes transition
energies and oscillator strengths for all possible allowed transitions and was
computed using the best available theoretical potential energies and dipole
transition moment function with the former adjusted to account for experimental
data. The A-X line list, as well as new line lists for the B'-X and the X-X
(pure rovibrational) transitions, were included in comprehensive stellar
atmosphere models for M, L, and T dwarfs and solar-type stars. The resulting
spectra, when compared to models lacking MgH, show that MgH provides
significant opacity in the visible between 4400 and 5600 Angstrom. Further,
comparison of the spectra obtained with the current line list to spectra
obtained using the line list constructed by Kurucz (1993) show that the Kurucz
list significantly overestimates the opacity due to MgH particularly for the
bands near 5150 and 4800 Angstrom with the discrepancy increasing with
decreasing effective temperature.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
A Cut Finite Element Method for the Bernoulli Free Boundary Value Problem
We develop a cut finite element method for the Bernoulli free boundary problem. The free boundary, represented by an approximate signed distance function on a fixed background mesh, is allowed to intersect elements in an arbitrary fashion. This leads to so called cut elements in the vicinity of the boundary. To obtain a stable method, stabilization terms is added in the vicinity of the cut elements penalizing the gradient jumps across element sides. The stabilization also ensures good conditioning of the resulting discrete system. We develop a method for shape optimization based on moving the distance function along a velocity field which is computed as the Riesz representation of the shape derivative. We show that the velocity field is the solution to an interface problem and we prove an a priori error estimate of optimal order, given the limited regularity of the velocity field across the interface, for the the velocity field in the norm. Finally, we present illustrating numerical results

Nonlinear wave interaction and spin models in the MHD regime
Here we consider the influence on the electron spin in the MHD regime.
Recently developed models which include spin-velocity correlations are taken as
a starting point. A theoretical argument is presented, suggesting that in the
MHD regime a single fluid electron model with spin correlations is equivalent
to a model with spin-up and spin-down electrons constituting different fluids,
but where the spin-velocity correlations are omitted. Three wave interaction of
2 shear Alfven waves and a compressional Alfven wave is then taken as a model
problem to evaluate the asserted equivalence. The theoretical argument turns
out to be supported, as the predictions of the two models agree completely.
Furthermore, the three wave coupling coefficients obey the Manley-Rowe
relations, which give further support to the soundness of the models and the
validity of the assumptions made in the derivation. Finally we point out that
the proposed two-fluid model can be incorporated in standard Particle-In-Cell
schemes with only minor modifications.Comment: 8 page
