Assessing the effects of repeated handling on physiology and condition of semi-precocial nestlings
Repeated exposure to elevated levels of glucocorticoids during development can have long-term detrimental effects on survival and fitness, potentially associated with increased telomere attrition. Nestling birds are regularly handled for ecological research, yet few authors have considered the potential for handling-induced stress to influence hormonally-mediated phenotypic development or bias interpretations of subsequent focal measurements. We experimentally manipulated the handling experience of the semi-precocial nestlings of European Storm Petrel Hydrobates pelagicus to simulate handling in a typical field study and examined cumulative effects on physiology and condition in late postnatal development. Neither baseline corticosterone (the primary glucocorticoid in birds), telomere length nor body condition varied with the number of handling episodes. The absence of a response could be explained if Storm Petrels did not perceive handling to be stressful or if there is dissociation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis from stressful stimuli in early life. Eliciting a response to a stressor may be maladaptive for cavity-dwelling young that are unable to escape or defend themselves. Furthermore, avoiding elevated overall glucocorticoid exposure may be particularly important in a long-lived species, in which accelerated early-life telomere erosion could impact negatively upon longevity. We propose that the level of colony-wide disturbance induced by investigator handling of young could be important in underlining species-specific responses. Storm Petrel nestlings appear unresponsive to investigator handling within the limits of handling in a typical field study and handling at this level should not bias physiological and morphological measurements
Complete Classification of the String-like Solutions of the Gravitating Abelian Higgs Model
The static cylindrically symmetric solutions of the gravitating Abelian Higgs
model form a two parameter family. In this paper we give a complete
classification of the string-like solutions of this system. We show that the
parameter plane is composed of two different regions with the following
characteristics: One region contains the standard asymptotically conic cosmic
string solutions together with a second kind of solutions with Melvin-like
asymptotic behavior. The other region contains two types of solutions with
bounded radial extension. The border between the two regions is the curve of

Moduli and (un)attractor black hole thermodynamics
We investigate four-dimensional spherically symmetric black hole solutions in
gravity theories with massless, neutral scalars non-minimally coupled to gauge
fields. In the non-extremal case, we explicitly show that, under the variation
of the moduli, the scalar charges appear in the first law of black hole
thermodynamics. In the extremal limit, the near horizon geometry is
and the entropy does not depend on the values of moduli at
infinity. We discuss the attractor behaviour by using Sen's entropy function
formalism as well as the effective potential approach and their relation with
the results previously obtained through special geometry method. We also argue
that the attractor mechanism is at the basis of the matching between the
microscopic and macroscopic entropies for the extremal non-BPS Kaluza-Klein

Toward a Quantization of Null Dust Collapse
Spherically symmetric, null dust clouds, like their time-like counterparts,
may collapse classically into black holes or naked singularities depending on
their initial conditions. We consider the Hamiltonian dynamics of the collapse
of an arbitrary distribution of null dust, expressed in terms of the physical
radius, , the null coordinates, for a collapsing cloud or for an
expanding cloud, the mass function, , of the null matter, and their
conjugate momenta. This description is obtained from the ADM description by a
Kucha\v{r}-type canonical transformation. The constraints are linear in the
canonical momenta and Dirac's constraint quantization program is implemented.
Explicit solutions the constraints are obtained for both expanding and

Globular cluster luminosity function as distance indicator
Globular clusters are among the first objects used to establish the distance
scale of the Universe. In the 1970-ies it has been recognized that the
differential magnitude distribution of old globular clusters is very similar in
different galaxies presenting a peak at M_V ~ -7.5. This peak magnitude of the
so-called Globular Cluster Luminosity Function has been then established as a
secondary distance indicator. The intrinsic accuracy of the method has been
estimated to be of the order of ~0.2 mag, competitive with other distance
determination methods. Lately the study of the Globular Cluster Systems has
been used more as a tool for galaxy formation and evolution, and less so for
distance determinations. Nevertheless, the collection of homogeneous and large
datasets with the ACS on board HST presented new insights on the usefulness of
the Globular Cluster Luminosity Function as distance indicator. I discuss here
recent results based on observational and theoretical studies, which show that
this distance indicator depends on complex physics of the cluster formation and
dynamical evolution, and thus can have dependencies on Hubble type, environment
and dynamical history of the host galaxy. While the corrections are often
relatively small, they can amount to important systematic differences that make
the Globular Cluster Luminosity Function a less accurate distance indicator

The trans-ancestral genomic architecture of glycemic traits
Glycemic traits are used to diagnose and monitor type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic health. To date, most genetic studies of glycemic traits have focused on individuals of European ancestry. Here we aggregated genome-wide association studies comprising up to 281,416 individuals without diabetes (30% non-European ancestry) for whom fasting glucose, 2-h glucose after an oral glucose challenge, glycated hemoglobin and fasting insulin data were available. Trans-ancestry and single-ancestry meta-analyses identified 242 loci (99 novel; P < 5 x 10(-8)), 80% of which had no significant evidence of between-ancestry heterogeneity. Analyses restricted to individuals of European ancestry with equivalent sample size would have led to 24 fewer new loci. Compared with single-ancestry analyses, equivalent-sized trans-ancestry fine-mapping reduced the number of estimated variants in 99% credible sets by a median of 37.5%. Genomic-feature, gene-expression and gene-set analyses revealed distinct biological signatures for each trait, highlighting different underlying biological pathways.
