Topology Optimization and 3D printing of Large Deformation Compliant Mechanisms for Straining Biological Tissues
This paper presents a synthesis approach in a density-based topology
optimization setting to design large deformation compliant mechanisms for
inducing desired strains in biological tissues. The modelling is based on
geometrical nonlinearity together with a suitably chosen hypereleastic material
model, wherein the mechanical equilibrium equations are solved using the total
Lagrangian finite element formulation. An objective based on least-square error
with respect to target strains is formulated and minimized with the given set
of constraints and the appropriate surroundings of the tissues. To circumvent
numerical instabilities arising due to large deformation in low stiffness
design regions during topology optimization, a strain-energy based
interpolation scheme is employed. The approach uses an extended robust
formulation i.e. the eroded, intermediate and dilated projections for the
design description as well as variation in tissue stiffness. Efficacy of the
synthesis approach is demonstrated by designing various compliant mechanisms
for providing different target strains in biological tissue constructs.
Optimized compliant mechanisms are 3D-printed and their performances are
recorded in a simplified experiment and compared with simulation results
obtained by a commercial software.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figure
Ionized and neutral gas in the peculiar star/cluster complex in NGC 6946
The characteristics of ionized and HI gas in the peculiar star/cluster
complex in NGC 6946, obtained with the 6-m telescope (BTA) SAO RAS, the Gemini
North telescope, and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), are
presented. The complex is unusual as hosting a super star cluster, the most
massive known in an apparently non-interacting giant galaxy. It contains a
number of smaller clusters and is bordered by a sharp C-shaped rim. We found
that the complex is additionally unusual in having peculiar gas kinematics. The
velocity field of the ionized gas reveals a deep oval minimum, ~300 pc in size,
centered 7" east of the supercluster. The Vr of the ionized gas in the dip
center is 100 km/s lower than in its surroundings, and emission lines within
the dip appear to be shock excited. This dip is near the center of an HI hole
and a semi-ring of HII regions. The HI (and less certainly, HII) velocity
fields reveal expansion, with the velocity reaching ~30 km/s at a distance
about 300 pc from the center of expansion, which is near the deep minimum
position. The super star cluster is at the western rim of the minimum. The
sharp western rim of the whole complex is plausibly a manifestation of a
regular dust arc along the complex edge. Different hypotheses about the complex
and the Vr depression origins are discussed, including a HVC/dark mini-halo
impact, a BCD galaxy merging, and a gas outflow due to release of energy from

Circular String-Instabilities in Curved Spacetime
We investigate the connection between curved spacetime and the emergence of
string-instabilities, following the approach developed by Loust\'{o} and
S\'{a}nchez for de Sitter and black hole spacetimes. We analyse the linearised
equations determining the comoving physical (transverse) perturbations on
circular strings embedded in Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m and de
Sitter backgrounds. In all 3 cases we find that the "radial" perturbations grow
infinitely for (ring-collapse), while the "angular"
perturbations are bounded in this limit. For we find that
the perturbations in both physical directions (perpendicular to the string
world-sheet in 4 dimensions) blow up in the case of de Sitter space. This
confirms results recently obtained by Loust\'{o} and S\'{a}nchez who considered

Relationship between Fecal Content of Fatty Acids and Cyclooxygenase mRNA Expression and Fatty Acid Composition in Duodenal Biopsies, Serum Lipoproteins, and Dietary Fat in Colectomized Familial Adenomatous Polyposis Patients
A few familial adenomatous polyposis studies have focused upon faecal sterols and bile acids but none has analysed the fecal content of fatty acids. We report here findings of an observational study on 29 colectomized familial adenomatous polyposis patients that describe the fecal content of fatty acids, and relate this to the proportions of fatty acids and levels of cyclooxygenase mRNA expression in duodenal biopsies, levels of serum lipoproteins, and diet. In the ileostomy group separately (n = 12), the fecal content of arachidonic acid was correlated negatively to the proportions of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in duodenal biopsies. Total serum-cholesterol was negatively correlated to the fecal content of saturates and monounsaturates. The fecal palmitoleic acid/palmitic acid ratio was positively correlated to the levels of cyclooxygease-2 expression in duodenal biopsies.In the ileal-pouch-anal anastomosis group separately (n = 17), significant correlations were found between the fecal contents of oleic acid, linoleic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid, and the proportions of myristic acid, oleic acid and eicosaenoic acid in duodenal biopsies. Dietary monounsaturates were positively correlated to different fecal fatty acids. Future studies should focus on molecular mechanisms relevant to fatty acid metabolism, inflammation, and angiogenesis, in addition to nutrition
Microscopic Description of Black Rings in AdS/CFT
We discuss some aspects of the recently discovered BPS black ring solutions
in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the type IIB frame in which the
black ring carries the charges of the D1-D5-P system, we propose a microscopic
description of the rings in the orbifold CFT governing this system. In our
proposal, the CFT effectively splits into two parts: one part captures the
supertube-like properties of the ring, and the other captures the entropy. We
can also understand the black ring entropy by relating the geometry near the
ring to BPS black holes in four dimensions, although this latter approach does
not directly lead to an identification of black rings in terms of the D1-D5-P
