    The role of seasonal tourism in fragile territories : the case of Solanas, Sardinia

    Since the post-war period Italy has been invested by an epochal phenomenon of redistribution of population, economies and urban materials from highlands to lowlands, from the hinterland to the coastline. Moreover, since the 1970s, the development of the Mediterranean coastal territories assumed a character strongly oriented to tourism too, altering the balance sedimented through the years in these areas, converting many slow landscapes into intermittent territories triggered by specifc seasons and monocultural activities. This proposal intends to refect on the possible development weaving the destinies of such realities, in the awareness that the reactivation of these territorial systems could be led by the rediscovery of connections and emergencies often forgotten, silent traces able to give back values to these tired landscapes. Working through interconnected territorial structures means to consider their networks and their tangible and intangible capital, and this is an indispensable exercise in order to rethink our country and some of its reiterated development models. Starting with a few days of interdisciplinary seminars that took place in between Politecnico di Torino and Politecnico di Milano, and the organisation of a workshop on-site, Solanas was identifed as an emblematic case, a valley able to explore these issues. Located in the south of Sardinia, annexed to the territory of Sinnai due to its ancient transhumance role, today it remains detached from the main inhabited centres, suffering strong isolation from welfare systems during the low season, and the exploitation of landscape resources because of mere tourist purposes during the high season. This condition of seasonal contraction, unfortunately rarely accompanied by a medium-long term planning, can be retraced along many other coastal areas of Mediterranean countries, becoming a specifc fragility of our reality to take into consideration

    A tale of swinger insects: Signatures of past sexuality between divergent lineages of a parthenogenetic weevil revealed by ribosomal intraindividual variation

    Naupactus cervinus (Boheman) (Curculionidae, Naupactini) is a parthenogenetic weevil native to the Paranaense Forest which displays high levels of genetic variation. Two divergent clades were identified, one ranging in forest areas (Forest clade), and the other in open vegetation areas (Grassland clade). Both of them have individuals with high levels of heterozygosity in ribosomal sequences. Investigation of intraindividual variation in ITS1 sequences through cloning and posterior sequencing suggested that mating between both groups most likely occurred in the Paranaense Forest after a secondary contact, which led to fixed heterozygotes as a consequence of parthenogenesis. Otherwise, sexual segregation would have disrupted multilocus genotypes. Only a small number of heterozygous genotypes of all the possible combinations are found in nature. We propose the occurrence of a hybrid zone in the Paranaense Forest. The fact that it is one of the most important biodiversity hotspots of the world, together with its key role for investigating evolutionary processes, makes it worthy of conservation.     Identification of DNA methyltransferases and demethylases in Solanum melongena L., and their transcription dynamics during fruit development and after salt and drought stresses

    DNA methylation through the activity of cytosine-5-methyltransferases (C5-MTases) and DNA demethylases plays important roles in genome protection as well as in regulating gene expression during plant development and plant response to environmental stresses. In this study, we report on a genome-wide identification of six C5-MTases (SmelMET1, SmelCMT2, SmelCMT3a, SmelCMT3b, SmelDRM2, SmelDRM3) and five demethylases (SmelDemethylase_1, SmelDemethylase_2, SmelDemethylase_3, SmelDemethylase_4, SmelDemethylase_5) in eggplant. Gene structural characteristics, chromosomal localization and phylogenetic analyses are also described. The transcript profiling of both C5-MTases and demethylases was assessed at three stages of fruit development in three eggplant commercial F1 hybrids: i.e. 'Clara', 'Nite Lady' and 'Bella Roma', representative of the eggplant berry phenotypic variation. The trend of activation of C5-MTases and demethylase genes varied in function of the stage of fruit development and was genotype dependent. The transcription pattern of C5MTAses and demethylases was also assessed in leaves of the F1 hybrid 'Nite Lady' subjected to salt and drought stresses. A marked up-regulation and down-regulation of some C5-MTases and demethylases was detected, while others did not vary in their expression profile. Our results suggest a role for both C5-MTases and demethylases during fruit development, as well as in response to abiotic stresses in eggplant, and provide a starting framework for supporting future epigenetic studies in the species
