Atmospheric Channel Characteristics for Quantum Communication with Continuous Polarization Variables
We investigate the properties of an atmospheric channel for free space
quantum communication with continuous polarization variables. In our
prepare-and-measure setup, coherent polarization states are transmitted through
an atmospheric quantum channel of 100m length on the roof of our institute's
building. The signal states are measured by homodyne detection with the help of
a local oscillator (LO) which propagates in the same spatial mode as the
signal, orthogonally polarized to it. Thus the interference of signal and LO is
excellent and atmospheric fluctuations are autocompensated. The LO also acts as
spatial and spectral filter, which allows for unrestrained daylight operation.
Important characteristics for our system are atmospheric channel influences
that could cause polarization, intensity and position excess noise. Therefore
we study these influences in detail. Our results indicate that the channel is
suitable for our quantum communication system in most weather conditions.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Applied Physics B following an

Efficient and robust entanglement generation in a many-particle system with resonant dipole-dipole interactions
We propose and discuss a scheme for robust and efficient generation of
many-particle entanglement in an ensemble of Rydberg atoms with resonant
dipole-dipole interactions. It is shown that in the limit of complete dipole
blocking, the system is isomorphic to a multimode Jaynes-Cummings model. While
dark-state population transfer is not capable of creating entanglement, other
adiabatic processes are identified that lead to complex, maximally entangled
states, such as the N-particle analog of the GHZ state in a few steps. The
process is robust, works for even and odd particle numbers and the
characteristic time for entanglement generation scales with N^a, with a being
less than unity.Comment: 4 figure
Generation of entangled states of two atoms inside a leaky cavity
An in-depth theoretical study is carried out to examine the
quasi-deterministic entanglement of two atoms inside a leaky cavity. Two
-type three-level atoms, initially in their ground states, may become
maximally entangled through the interaction with a single photon. By working
out an exact analytic solution, we show that the probability of success depends
crucially on the spectral function of the injected photon. With a cavity
photon, one can generate a maximally entangled state with a certain probability
that is always less than 50%. However, for an injected photon with a narrower
spectral width, this probability can be significantly increased. In particular,
we discover situations in which entanglement can be achieved in a single trial
with an almost unit probability
Direct <i>Q</i> -Value Determination of the <i>β-</i> Decay of 187Re
The cyclotron frequency ratio of 187Os29+ to 187Re29+ ions was measured with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer PENTATRAP. The achieved result of R=1.000 000 013 882(5) is to date the most precise such measurement performed on ions. Furthermore, the total binding-energy difference of the 29 missing electrons in Re and Os was calculated by relativistic multiconfiguration methods, yielding the value of ΔE=53.5(10) eV. Finally, using the achieved results, the mass difference between neutral 187Re and 187Os, i.e., the Q value of the β-− decay of 187Re, is determined to be 2470.9(13) eV
Cavity implementation of quantum interference in a -type atom
A scheme for engineering quantum interference in a -type atom
coupled to a frequency-tunable, single-mode cavity field with a pre-selected
polarization at finite temperature is proposed. Interference-assisted
population trapping, population inversions and probe gain at one sideband of
the Autler-Townes spectrum are predicted for certain cavity resonant
frequencies.Comment: 2 postscript figures are adde
Wave functions and decay constants of and mesons in the relativistic potential model
With the decay constants of and mesons measured in experiment
recently, we revisit the study of the bound states of quark and antiquark in
and mesons in the relativistic potential model. The relativistic bound
state wave equation is solved numerically. The masses, decay constants and wave
functions of and mesons are obtained. Both the masses and decay
constants obtained here can be consistent with the experimental data. The wave
functions can be used in the study of and meson decays.Comment: more discussion added, to appear in EPJ
Many non-equivalent realizations of the associahedron
Hohlweg and Lange (2007) and Santos (2004, unpublished) have found two
different ways of constructing exponential families of realizations of the
n-dimensional associahedron with normal vectors in {0,1,-1}^n, generalizing the
constructions of Loday (2004) and Chapoton-Fomin-Zelevinsky (2002). We classify
the associahedra obtained by these constructions modulo linear equivalence of
their normal fans and show, in particular, that the only realization that can
be obtained with both methods is the Chapoton-Fomin-Zelevinsky (2002)
associahedron.
For the Hohlweg-Lange associahedra our classification is a priori coarser
than the classification up to isometry of normal fans, by
Bergeron-Hohlweg-Lange-Thomas (2009). However, both yield the same classes. As
a consequence, we get that two Hohlweg-Lange associahedra have linearly
equivalent normal fans if and only if they are isometric.
The Santos construction, which produces an even larger family of
associahedra, appears here in print for the first time. Apart of describing it
in detail we relate it with the c-cluster complexes and the denominator fans in
cluster algebras of type A.
A third classical construction of the associahedron, as the secondary
polytope of a convex n-gon (Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky, 1990), is shown to
never produce a normal fan linearly equivalent to any of the other two
constructions.Comment: 30 pages, 13 figure
