Intracavity Dye-Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (IDLAS) for application to planetary molecules
Time-resolved, quasi-continuous wave, intracavity dye-laser absorption spectroscopy is applied to the investigation of absolute absorption coefficients for vibrational-rotational overtone bands of water at visible wavelengths. Emphasis is placed on critical factors affecting detection sensitivity and data analysis. Typical generation-time dependent absorption spectra are given
Pre-shuttle lidar system research
Included are the results of the initial phase of a simulation study in connection with photomultiplier tubes (PMT) and associated networks and an analytical study of atmospheric physics (including multiscattering) leading to modeling studies in connection with differential absorption lidar (DIAL) observations. This effort was in support of the ER-2 aircraft DIAL projects
Influence of Anomalous Dispersion on Optical Characteristics of Quantum Wells
Frequency dependencies of optical characteristics (reflection, transmission
and absorption of light) of a quantum well are investigated in a vicinity of
interband resonant transitions in a case of two closely located excited energy
levels. A wide quantum well in a quantizing magnetic field directed normally to
the quantum-well plane, and monochromatic stimulating light are considered.
Distinctions between refraction coefficients of barriers and quantum well, and
a spatial dispersion of the light wave are taken into account. It is shown that
at large radiative lifetimes of excited states in comparison with nonradiative
lifetimes, the frequency dependence of the light reflection coefficient in the
vicinity of resonant interband transitions is defined basically by a curve,
similar to the curve of the anomalous dispersion of the refraction coefficient.
The contribution of this curve weakens at alignment of radiative and
nonradiative times, it is practically imperceptible at opposite ratio of
lifetimes . It is shown also that the frequency dependencies similar to the
anomalous dispersion do not arise in transmission and absorption coefficients.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Generating loop graphs via Hopf algebra in quantum field theory
We use the Hopf algebra structure of the time-ordered algebra of field
operators to generate all connected weighted Feynman graphs in a recursive and
efficient manner. The algebraic representation of the graphs is such that they
can be evaluated directly as contributions to the connected n-point functions.
The recursion proceeds by loop order and vertex number.Comment: 22 pages, LaTeX + AMS + eepic; new section with alternative recursion

Bacterial Community Sequences of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in the Potomac River.
Here, we report results from PCR and sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA genes from leaf and root surfaces from nine submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) samples comprising five species. Samples were from four sites along the Potomac River
Targeting hyperarousal: Mantram Repetition Program for PTSD in US veterans.
Background: Hyperarousal appears to play an important role in the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, but current evidence-based treatments appear to address this symptom type less effectively than the other symptom clusters. The Mantram Repetition Program (MRP) is a meditation-based intervention that has previously been shown to improve symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may be especially helpful for hyperarousal. If MRP is an effective tool for decreasing this often treatment-resistant symptom cluster, it may become an important clinical tool. Objective: The goal of this secondary analysis was to examine the effect of the MRP on hyperarousal and other PTSD symptom clusters and to examine hyperarousal as a mediator of treatment response. Method: Secondary analyses were conducted on data from a randomized controlled trial in which Veterans with PTSD (n = 173) were assigned to the MRP or a non-specific psychotherapy control and assessed pre-treatment, post-treatment and 8 weeks after treatment completion. The impact of the interventions on PTSD symptom clusters was examined, and time-lagged hierarchical linear modelling was applied to examine alternative mediation models. Results: All PTSD symptom clusters improved in both treatments. MRP led to greater reductions in hyperarousal at post-treatment (Hedge's g = 0.57) and follow-up (Hedge's g = 0.52), and in numbing at post-treatment (Hedge's g = 0.47). Hyperarousal mediated reductions in the composite of the other PTSD symptom clusters. Although the reverse model was significant as well, the effect was weaker in this direction. Conclusion: Interventions focused on the management of hyperarousal may play an important role in recovery from PTSD. The MRP appears efficacious in reducing hyperarousal, and thereby impacting other PTSD symptom clusters, as one pathway to facilitating recovery
Decay of correlations in the dissipative two-state system
We study the equilibrium correlation function of the polaron-dressed
tunnelling operator in the dissipative two-state system and compare the
asymptoptic dynamics with that of the position correlations. For an Ohmic
spectral density with the damping strength , the correlation functions
are obtained in analytic form for all times at any and any bias. For ,
the asymptotic dynamics is found by using a diagrammatic approach within a
Coulomb gas representation. At T=0, the tunnelling or coherence correlations
drop as , whereas the position correlations show universal decay
. The former decay law is a signature of unscreened attractive
charge-charge interactions, while the latter is due to unscreened dipole-dipole
interactions.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Europhys. Let
Determining ethylene group disorder levels in -(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Br
We present a detailed structural investigation of the organic superconductor
-(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]Br at temperatures from 9 to 300 K.
Anomalies in the dependence of the lattice parameters are associated with a
glass-like transition previously reported at = 77 K. From structure
refinements at 9, 100 and 300 K, the orthorhombic crystalline symmetry, space
group {\it Pnma}, is established at all temperatures. Further, we extract the
dependence of the occupation factor of the eclipsed conformation of the
terminal ethylene groups of the BEDT-TTF molecule. At 300 K, we find 67(2) %,
with an increase to 97(3) % at 9 K. We conclude that the glass-like transition
is not primarily caused by configurational freezing-out of the ethylene groups
