    How many candidates are needed to make elections hard to manipulate?

    In multiagent settings where the agents have different preferences, preference aggregation is a central issue. Voting is a general method for preference aggregation, but seminal results have shown that all general voting protocols are manipulable. One could try to avoid manipulation by using voting protocols where determining a beneficial manipulation is hard computationally. The complexity of manipulating realistic elections where the number of candidates is a small constant was recently studied (Conitzer 2002), but the emphasis was on the question of whether or not a protocol becomes hard to manipulate for some constant number of candidates. That work, in many cases, left open the question: How many candidates are needed to make elections hard to manipulate? This is a crucial question when comparing the relative manipulability of different voting protocols. In this paper we answer that question for the voting protocols of the earlier study: plurality, Borda, STV, Copeland, maximin, regular cup, and randomized cup. We also answer that question for two voting protocols for which no results on the complexity of manipulation have been derived before: veto and plurality with runoff.     Optimal and Suboptimal Detection of Gaussian Signals in Noise: Asymptotic Relative Efficiency

    The performance of Bayesian detection of Gaussian signals using noisy observations is investigated via the error exponent for the average error probability. Under unknown signal correlation structure or limited processing capability it is reasonable to use the simple quadratic detector that is optimal in the case of an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) signal. Using the large deviations principle, the performance of this detector (which is suboptimal for non-i.i.d. signals) is compared with that of the optimal detector for correlated signals via the asymptotic relative efficiency defined as the ratio between sample sizes of two detectors required for the same performance in the large-sample-size regime. The effects of SNR on the ARE are investigated. It is shown that the asymptotic efficiency of the simple quadratic detector relative to the optimal detector converges to one as the SNR increases without bound for any bounded spectrum, and that the simple quadratic detector performs as well as the optimal detector for a wide range of the correlation values at high SNR.Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the SPIE Conference on Advanced Signal Processing Algorithms, Architectures and Implementations XV, San Diego, CA, Jul. 1 - Aug. 4, 200

    Neyman-Pearson Detection of Gauss-Markov Signals in Noise: Closed-Form Error Exponent and Properties

    The performance of Neyman-Pearson detection of correlated stochastic signals using noisy observations is investigated via the error exponent for the miss probability with a fixed level. Using the state-space structure of the signal and observation model, a closed-form expression for the error exponent is derived, and the connection between the asymptotic behavior of the optimal detector and that of the Kalman filter is established. The properties of the error exponent are investigated for the scalar case. It is shown that the error exponent has distinct characteristics with respect to correlation strength: for signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) >1 the error exponent decreases monotonically as the correlation becomes stronger, whereas for SNR <1 there is an optimal correlation that maximizes the error exponent for a given SNR.Comment: To appear in the IEEE Transactions on Information Theor

    Mode-coupling theory of the glass transition for confined fluids

    We present a detailed derivation of a microscopic theory for the glass transition of a liquid enclosed between two parallel walls relying on a mode-coupling approximation. This geometry lacks translational invariance perpendicular to the walls, which implies that the density profile and the density-density correlation function depends explicitly on the distances to the walls. We discuss the residual symmetry properties in slab geometry and introduce a symmetry adapted complete set of two-point correlation functions. Since the currents naturally split into components parallel and perpendicular to the walls the mathematical structure of the theory differs from the established mode-coupling equations in bulk. We prove that the equations for the nonergodicity parameters still display a covariance property similar to bulk liquids.Comment: 16 pages; to be published in PR

    Automating {UML} Models Merge for Web Services Testing

    International audienceThis paper presents a method for merging UML models which takes place in a quality evaluation framework for Web Services (WS). This framework, called iTac-QoS, is an ex- tended UDDI server (a yellow pages system dedicated to WS), using model based testing to assess quality. WS ven- dors have to create UML model of their product and our framework extracts tests from it. Depending on the results of the test execution, a mark is given to WS. This mark per- mits to customers to have an idea about the quality of WS they find on our UDDI server. Up today, our framework was limited to WS which did not use other WS. This was justified by the fact that it is im- possible for vendors to create a good model of a foreign product. Our method for model merging solves this prob- lem: each vendor produces models of its own product, and we automatically merge the different models. The resulting model from this merging represents the composition of the different WS. For each type of diagram present in the models (class, instance or state-chart diagram), a method is proposed in order to produce a unique model. In addition to this, a solu- tion is proposed to merge all OCL code in the class modeling the WS under test. Unfortunately, this process introduces inconsistencies in the resulting model, that falsify the results of the subsequent test generation phase. We thus propose to detect such inconsistencies in order to distinguish incon- sistent and unreachable test targets

    A Video Transmission Framework Using Components and Multi-Agent Systems

    International audienceThis paper presents an application of video transmission over Internet, which goal is to be used in a cooperative plat- form. This application uses proxies during the transmission to adapt the video (changing the size, the framerate and/or the encoding format). Adaptation is a necessity in this kind of application, due to the diversity of receivers (computers, mobile phones, PDA . . . ). During the design process, we chose to use component ori- ented programming and multi-agent systems. We present here how these two paradigms help us to have a flexible and evolutive application, and, for each transmission?s step, what is the most appropriated solution. At the end, we also present tests that have been made to evaluate the power needed by the proxies in order to discuss about benefits that can be brought by our architecture

    Consistency conditions in the chiral ring of super Yang-Mills theories

    Starting from the generalized Konishi anomaly equations at the non-perturbative level, we demonstrate that the algebraic consistency of the quantum chiral ring of the N=1 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group U(N), one adjoint chiral superfield X and N_f<=2N flavours of quarks implies that the periods of the meromorphic one-form Tr dz/(z-X) must be quantized. This shows in particular that identities in the open string description of the theory, that follow from the fact that gauge invariant observables are expressed in terms of gauge variant building blocks, are mapped onto non-trivial dynamical equations in the closed string description.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure; v2: typos corrected, published versio
