Vacuum Alignment in Technicolor Theories-I. The Technifermion Sector
We have carried out numerical studies of vacuum alignment in technicolor
models of electroweak and flavor symmetry breaking. The goal is to understand
alignment's implications for strong and weak CP nonconservation in quark
interactions. In this first part, we restrict our attention to the
technifermion sector of simple models. We find several interesting phenomena,
including (1) the possibility that all observable phases in the technifermions'
unitary vacuum-alignment matrix are integer multiples of \pi/N' where N' \le N,
the number of technifermion doublets, and (2) the possibility of exceptionally
light pseudoGoldstone technipions.Comment: 19 pages, Latex with one postscript figur
The ultimate tactics of self-referential systems
Mathematics is usually regarded as a kind of language. The essential behavior
of physical phenomena can be expressed by mathematical laws, providing
descriptions and predictions. In the present essay I argue that, although
mathematics can be seen, in a first approach, as a language, it goes beyond
this concept. I conjecture that mathematics presents two extreme features,
denoted here by {\sl irreducibility} and {\sl insaturation}, representing
delimiters for self-referentiality. These features are then related to physical
laws by realizing that nature is a self-referential system obeying bounds
similar to those respected by mathematics. Self-referential systems can only be
autonomous entities by a kind of metabolism that provides and sustains such an
autonomy. A rational mind, able of consciousness, is a manifestation of the
self-referentiality of the Universe. Hence mathematics is here proposed to go
beyond language by actually representing the most fundamental existence
condition for self-referentiality. This idea is synthesized in the form of a
principle, namely, that {\sl mathematics is the ultimate tactics of
self-referential systems to mimic themselves}. That is, well beyond an
effective language to express the physical world, mathematics uncovers a deep
manifestation of the autonomous nature of the Universe, wherein the human brain
is but an instance.Comment: 9 pages. This essay received the 4th. Prize in the 2015 FQXi essay

The curious case of the companion: evidence for cold accretion onto a dwarf satellite near the isolated elliptical NGC 7796
The isolated elliptical (IE) NGC 7796 is accompanied by an interesting
early-type dwarf galaxy, named NGC7796-DW1. It exhibits a tidal tail, very boxy
isophotes, and multiple nuclei or regions (A, B, and C) that are bluer than the
bulk population of the galaxy, indicating a younger age. These properties are
suggestive of a dwarf-dwarf merger remnant. We use the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic
Explorer (MUSE) at the VLT to investigate NGC 7796-DW1. We extract
characteristic spectra to which we apply the STARLIGHT population synthesis
software to obtain ages and metallicities of the various population components
of the galaxy. The galaxy's main body is old and metal-poor. A surprising
result is the extended line emission in the galaxy, forming a ring-like
structure with a projected diameter of 2.2 kpc. The line ratios fall into the
regime of HII-regions, although OB-stellar populations cannot be identified by
spectral signatures. Nucleus A is a relatively old (7 Gyr or older) and
metal-poor super star cluster, most probably the nucleus of the dwarf, now
displaced. The star-forming regions B and C show younger and distinctly more
metal-rich components. The emission line ratios of regions B and C indicate an
almost solar oxygen abundance, if compared with radiation models of HII
regions. NGC7796-DW1 occupies a particular role in the group of transition-type
galaxies with respect to its origin and current evolutionary state, being the
companion of an IE. The dwarf-dwarf merger scenario is excluded because of the
missing metal-rich merger component. A viable alternative is gas accretion from
a reservoir of cold, metal-rich gas. NGC7796 has to provide this gas within its
X-ray bright halo. As illustrated by NGC7796-DW1, cold accretion may be a
general solution to the problem of extended star formation histories in
transition dwarf galaxies. (abridged)Comment: comments: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy

The Collider Phenomenology of Technihadrons in the Technicolor Straw Man Model
We discuss the phenomenology of the lightest SU(3)_C singlet and non-singlet
technihadrons in the Straw Man Model of low-scale technicolor (TCSM). The
technihadrons are assumed to be those arising in topcolor--assisted technicolor
models in which topcolor is broken by technifermion condensates. We improve
upon the description of the color--singlet sector presented in our earlier
paper introducing the TCSM (hep-ph/9903369). These improvements are most
important for subprocess energies well below the masses of the technirho and
techniomega, and, therefore, apply especially to e+e- colliders such as LEP and
a low--energy linear collider. In the color--octet sector, we consider mixing
of the gluon, the coloron V_8 from topcolor breaking, and four isosinglet
color--octet technirho mesons. We assume, as expected in walking technicolor,
that these technirhos decay into qbar-q, gg, and g-technipion final states, but
not into technipion pairs. All the TCSM production and decay processes
discussed here are included in the event generator Pythia. We present several
simulations appropriate for the Tevatron Collider, and suggest benchmark model
lines for further experimental investigation.Comment: 42 pages, 7 figure

Composite Scalars at LEP: Constraining Technicolor Theories
LEPI and LEPII data can be used to constrain technicolor models with light,
neutral pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons, Pa. We use published limits on branching
ratios and cross sections for final states with photons, large missing energy,
jet pairs, and b bbar pairs to constrain the anomalous Pa Z0 Z0, Pa Z0 photon,
and Pa photon photon couplings. From these results, we derive bounds on the
size of the technicolor gauge group and the number of technifermion doublets in
models such as Low-scale Technicolor.Comment: 27 pages (including title page), 15 figures, 6 tables. version 2: In
addressing PRD referee comments, we have significantly expanded our
manuscript, to include detailed discussion of limits from LEP II data, as
well as expanding the number or specific models to which we apply our
results. As a result, we have changed the title from "Z0 decays to composite
scalars: constraining technicolor theories
Pseudo-Goldstone Boson Effects in Top-Antitop Productions at High Energy Hadron Colliders and Testing Technicolor Models
We study the top quark pair production process p+p(anti-p)-->top+antitop in
various kinds of technicolor (TC) models at the Fermilab Tevatron Run II and
the CERN LHC. The s-channel neutral pseudo-Goldstone bosons (PGB's) contribute
dominately to the production amplitudes from its coupling to the gluons through
the triangle loops of techniquarks and the top quark. Cross sections in
different TC models with s-channel PGB contributions are calculated. It is
shown that the PGB effects can be experimentally tested and different TC models
under consideration can be distinguished at the LHC. Therefore, the
p+p-->top+antitop process at the LHC provides feasible tests of the TC models.Comment: 10 pages in RevTex and 4 PS-files for the figures. Paramemter range
