Ventricular tachycardia associated with lacosamide co-medication in drug-resistant epilepsy.
We report a case of sustained ventricular tachycardia following the initiation of lacosamide as adjunctive epilepsy treatment. A 49-year-old male with intractable frontal lobe seizures experienced severe ventricular tachycardia following the addition of 400Â mg lacosamide to his existing regimen of carbamazepine, lamotrigine, clonazepam, and valproate. The tachycardia occurred during a cardiac stress test; stress tests prior to initiation of lacosamide were normal. Conduction defects, including QRS prolongation, persisted during hospitalization until lacosamide was discontinued. The patient had no prior history of cardiac arrhythmia but did possess cardiac risk factors, including hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and low heart rate variability. This case represents one part of a growing body of literature suggesting a link between arrhythmia and use of lacosamide, which enhances slow inactivation of sodium channels in both the brain and the heart. We believe further study may be necessary to assess the safety of lacosamide in epilepsy patients with cardiac risk factors
The Role of RFamide-Related Peptide-3 in Age-Related Reproductive Decline in Female Rats.
Reproductive senescence, the point in time when females cease to show estrous cyclicity, is associated with endocrine changes in the hypothalamus, pituitary, and gonads. However, the mechanisms triggering this transition are not well understood. To gain a better understanding of the top-down control of the transition from reproductive competence to a state of reproductive senescence, we investigated middle-aged female rats exhibiting varying degrees of reproductive decline, including individuals with normal cycles, irregular cycles, and complete cessation of cycles. We identified hormonal changes in the brain that manifest before ovarian cycles exhibit any deterioration. We found that females exhibit an increase in RFamide-related peptide-3 (RFRP3) mRNA expression in the hypothalamus in middle age prior to changes in estrous cycle length. This increase is transient and followed by subsequent decreases in kisspeptin (KiSS1) and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) mRNA expression. Expression of RFRP3 and its receptor also increased locally in the ovaries with advancing age. While it is well known that aging is associated with decreased GnRH release and downstream disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, herein, we provide evidence that reproductive senescence is likely triggered by alterations in a network of regulatory neuropeptides upstream of the GnRH system
Quantum Cryptography without Switching
We propose a new coherent state quantum key distribution protocol that
eliminates the need to randomly switch between measurement bases. This protocol
provides significantly higher secret key rates with increased bandwidths than
previous schemes that only make single quadrature measurements. It also offers
the further advantage of simplicity compared to all previous protocols which,
to date, have relied on switching.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Submitte
No-Switching Quantum Key Distribution using Broadband Modulated Coherent Light
We realize an end-to-end no-switching quantum key distribution protocol using
continuous-wave coherent light. We encode weak broadband Gaussian modulations
onto the amplitude and phase quadratures of light beams at the Shannon's
information limit. Our no-switching protocol achieves high secret key rate via
a post-selection protocol that utilizes both quadrature information
simultaneously. We establish a secret key rate of 25 Mbits/s for a lossless
channel and 1 kbit/s, per 17 MHz of detected bandwidth, for 90% channel loss.
Since our scheme is truly broadband, it can potentially deliver orders of
magnitude higher key rates by extending the encoding bandwidth with higher-end
telecommunication technology.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, publishe
Oil and Gas Map of the Middlesboro 30 x 60 Minute Quadrangle, Kentucky
The purpose of the oil and gas map series is to portray the distribution of oil and gas resources in a manner useful to the oil and gas industry and to others interested in subsurface research
Disparate data integration case for connected factories using timestamps
Manufacturing data integration of machine, process, and sensor data from the shop floor remains an important issue to achieve the anticipated business value of fully connected factories. Integrated manufacturing data has been a hallmark of Industry 4.0 initiatives, because integrated data precipitates better decision-making for cost, schedule, and system optimizations. In this paper, we extend work on optimizing manufacturing costs, describing an algorithm using timestamps to integrate previously unassociated quality and test information, enabling us to better identify and eliminate redundant tests. Results are provided and discussed, and we suggest the approach described may be valuable for some types of heterogeneous manufacturing data integration where timestamps and event chronologies are available
