Relating U(N)xU(N) to SU(N)xSU(N) Chern-Simons Membrane theories
By integrating out the U(1)_B gauge field, we show that the U(n)xU(n) ABJM
theory at level k is equivalent to a Z_k identification of the
(SU(n)xSU(n))/Z_n Chern-Simons theory, but only when n and k are coprime. As a
consequence, the k=1 ABJM model for two M2-branes in R^8 can be identified with
the N=8 (SU(2)xSU(2))/Z_2 theory. We also conjecture that the U(2)xU(2) ABJM
model at k=2 is equivalent to the N=8 SU(2)xSU(2)-theory.Comment: 16 pages, Latex; v2: references added; v3: Clarifications adde
Observations of Cygnus X-3 above 10(15) eV from 1979 - 1984
The ultra high energy gamma-ray source, cygnus X-3, has been observed more or less continuously with an array sensitive to 10 to the 15th power ev primaries between 1 Jan. 1979 and 31 Dec. 1984. There is evidence for time variability in the phase of gamma-ray emission over this period
Hot bottom burning and s-process nucleosynthesis in massive AGB stars at the beginning of the thermally-pulsing phase
We report the first spectroscopic identification of massive Galactic
asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars at the beginning of the thermal pulse (TP)
phase. These stars are the most Li-rich massive AGBs found to date, super
Li-rich AGBs with logE(Li)~3-4. The high Li overabundances are accompanied by
weak or no s-process element (i.e. Rb and Zr) enhancements. A comparison of our
observations with the most recent hot bottom burning (HBB) and s-process
nucleosynthesis models confirms that HBB is strongly activated during the first
TPs but the 22Ne neutron source needs many more TP and third dredge-up episodes
to produce enough Rb at the stellar surface. We also show that the short-lived
element Tc, usually used as an indicator of AGB genuineness, is not detected in
massive AGBs which is in agreement with the theoretical predictions when the
22Ne neutron source dominates the s-process nucleosynthesis.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters (7

New and old N=8 superconformal field theories in three dimensions
We show that an infinite family of N=6 d=3 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter
theories has hidden N=8 superconformal symmetry and hidden parity on the
quantum level. This family of theories is different from the one found by
Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena, as well as from the theories
constructed by Bagger and Lambert, and Gustavsson. We also test several
conjectural dualities between BLG theories and ABJ theories by comparing
superconformal indices of these theories.Comment: 16 pages, late
One step multiderivative methods for first order ordinary differential equations
A family of one-step multiderivative methods based on Padé approximants to the exponential function is developed.
The methods are extrapolated and analysed for use in PECE mode.
Error constants and stability intervals are calculated and the combinations compared with well known linear multi-step combinations and combinations using high accuracy Newton-Cotes quadrature formulas as correctors.

A new array for the study of ultra high energy gamma-ray sources
The design and operation of a 32 x 1 10 to the 15th power sq m array of scintillation detectors for the detection of 10 to the 15th power eV cosmic rays is described with an expected angular resolution of 1 deg, thus improving the present signal/background ratio for gamma ray sources. Data are recorded on a hybrid CAMAC, an in-house system which uses a laser and Pockel-Cell arrangement to routinely calibrate the timing stability of the detectors

Mass-Deformed BLG Theory in Light-Cone Superspace
Maximally supersymmetric mass deformation of the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson
(BLG) theory corresponds to a {non-central} extension of the d=3 N=8 Poincare
superalgebra (allowed in three dimensions). We obtain its light-cone superspace
formulation which has a novel feature of the dynamical supersymmetry generators
being {cubic} in the kinematical ones. The mass deformation picks a
quaternionic direction, which breaks the SO(8) R-symmetry down to SO(4)xSO(4).
The Hamiltonian of the theory is shown to be a quadratic form of the dynamical
supersymmetry transformations, to all orders in the mass parameter, M, and the
structure constants, f^{a b c d}.Comment: 23 page
Betatron emission as a diagnostic for injection and acceleration mechanisms in laser-plasma accelerators
Betatron x-ray emission in laser-plasma accelerators is a promising compact
source that may be an alternative to conventional x-ray sources, based on large
scale machines. In addition to its potential as a source, precise measurements
of betatron emission can reveal crucial information about relativistic
laser-plasma interaction. We show that the emission length and the position of
the x-ray emission can be obtained by placing an aperture mask close to the
source, and by measuring the beam profile of the betatron x-ray radiation far
from the aperture mask. The position of the x-ray emission gives information on
plasma wave breaking and hence on the laser non-linear propagation. Moreover,
the measurement of the longitudinal extension helps one to determine whether
the acceleration is limited by pump depletion or dephasing effects. In the case
of multiple injections, it is used to retrieve unambiguously the position in
the plasma of each injection. This technique is also used to study how, in a
capillary discharge, the variations of the delay between the discharge and the
laser pulse affect the interaction. The study reveals that, for a delay
appropriate for laser guiding, the x-ray emission only occurs in the second
half of the capillary: no electrons are injected and accelerated in the first
half.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with

Winding effects on brane/anti-brane pairs
We study a brane/anti-brane configuration which is separated along a compact
direction by constructing a tachyon effective action which takes into account
transverse scalars. Such an action is relevant in the study of HQCD model of
Sakai and Sugimoto of chiral symmetry breaking, where the size of the compact
circle sets the confinement scale. Our approach is motivated by string theory
orbifold constructions and gives a route to model inhomogeneous tachyon decay.
We illustrate the techniques involved with a relatively simple example of a
harmonic oscillator on a circle. We will then repeat the analysis for the
Sakai-Sugimoto model and show that by integrating out the winding modes will
provide us with a renormalized action with a lower energy than that of
truncating to zero winding sector.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures. v3: discussion and references added, published
