This article presents a case study concerning the implementation of the ISO standard (2000) in two SMEs in the wood sector. The aim is to model the manufacturing process in both firms. Our analysis stresses the issues connected with the devising of procedures and operating modes, which is the common concern of quality and information system engineers. Our study provides evidence that devising a procedure is not neutral. It conveys a representation of the activity, which might have an impact on the organisational structure of processes. We show that using operating modes with a narrow margin of interpretation and defining how to implement activities can be appropriate for structured process configurations. On the other hand, for semi-structured process configurations, the activity can be considered as a cognitive system rather than a function. The aim is then to give priority to rules defining the activity results or the strategies for the search for information, which provide for a large interpretation margin

Notre analyse permet d'éclairer les enjeux liés à la conception des procédures et des modes opératoires, qui est une préoccupation commune des qualiticiens et des concepteurs de SI. Notre étude montre que la conception d'une procédure n'est pas neutre. Elle véhicule une représentation de l'activité qui est susceptible d'impacter la structure organisationnelle des processus. Nous montrons que l'emploi de modes opératoires à faible marge d'interprétation définissant les modalités d'exécution des activités, peut convenir à des configurations structurées de processus. En revanche, dans les configurations de processus semi-structurés, l'activité s'assimile plus à un système cognitif qu'à une fonction. Il s'agit cette fois de privilégier les règles à forte marge d'interprétation, portant sur les résultats de l'activité, ou définissant les stratégies de recherche d'information

Live imaging of neural structure and function by fibred fluorescence microscopy

Only a few methods permit researchers to study selected regions of the central and peripheral nervous systems with a spatial and time resolution sufficient to image the function of neural structures. Usually, these methods cannot analyse deep-brain regions and a high-resolution method, which could repeatedly probe dynamic processes in any region of the central and peripheral nervous systems, is much needed. Here, we show that fibred fluorescence microscopy—which uses a small-diameter fibre-optic probe to provide real-time images—has the spatial resolution to image various neural structures in the living animal, the consistency needed for a sequential, quantitative evaluation of axonal degeneration/regeneration of a peripheral nerve, and the sensitivity to detect calcium transients on a sub-second timescale. These unique features should prove useful in many physiological studies requiring the in situ functional imaging of tissues in a living animal
