Persistent hypocalcaemia in a Chinese girl due to a novel de-novo activating mutation of the calciumsensing receptor gene
A significant proportion of patients formerly diagnosed with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism actually have activating mutation of the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) gene. Awareness of the possibility of activating mutation of CaSR gene in patients with sporadic idiopathic hypoparathyroidism is important because of its relevance to clinical management. This report is of a novel activating mutation of the CaSR gene identified in a 10-year-old Chinese girl who was initially diagnosed as having idiopathic hypoparathyroidism at 6 years of age after presenting with seizures. Her serum calcium level was difficult to maintain near the lower limit of normal despite treatment with high-dose calcitriol. Treatment with calcitriol produced significantly elevated urinary calcium-to-creatinine ratio. Direct sequencing of the CaSR gene showed a novel heterozygous mutation (p.Q735P (c.2204A>C)). Molecular genetic analysis of her parents demonstrated that both parents did not harbour the child's mutation, indicating that her mutation had arisen de novo. © 1995-2011 HKAM.published_or_final_versio
Control of Phytophthora palmivora on Orchids with Some New Systemic and Standard Fungicides
Three new systemic fungicides viz. Aliette (efosite-Al), Ridomil (metalaxyl) and Ridomil MZ
(metalaxyl plus mancozeb) were screened against two standard fungicides viz. Terrazole (etridiazole) and
Difolatan (captafol) for prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy against Phytophthora palmivora on orchids.
Terminal shoots of Aranda Christine hybrids were effectively protected from Phytophthora infection when
sprayed with metalaxyl at 0.05% a.i., metalaxyl-mancozeb mixture at 0.15% a.i. and captafol at 0.2% a.i.
three days before artificial inoculation. Etridiazole and efosite-Al, both at 0.1%a.i. did not give adequate
protection. Metalaxyl (0.05% a.i.) and its mixture with mancozeb (0.15% a.i.) retarded significantly disease
development by Phytophthora when used as a curative spray. Etridiazole (0.1% a.i.) and efosite-Al
(0.1% a.i.) gave moderate therapeutic control while captafol gave no therapeutic control. No phytoxicity
was observed with Ridomil MZ, Terrazole and Aliette up to concentrations of 0.5% a.i., 0.4% a.i. and
0.8% a.i. respectively. The Ridomil products, Aliette and Terrazole exhibited similar rates of inhibition
of linear extension of P. palmivora but differed in the degree of in vitro fungitoxicity. The Ridomil
products and Terrazole had EDso values of less than 1 Ilg/ml while Difolatan was relatively less toxic

Attitudes of Acutely Ill Patients Towards Euthanasia in Hong Kong
The global euthanasia debate by health care professionals has raised important ethical issues concerning the professional duties and responsibilities of nurses caring for terminal patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of acutely ill patients towards the practice of euthanasia in Hong Kong. A modified form of the 23-item Questionnaire for General Household Survey scale was used. This cross-sectional survey study was conducted with a stratified sample of in-patients recruited from a wide variety of departments in a regional, acute general hospital. Seventy-seven out of 129 patients responded (59.7%) and a high proportion of patients agreed with the use of euthanasia in the following circumstances: ‘where they were a third party’, if ‘someone they loved’ was affected, or if ‘they themselves were the patient’. Of the 77 patients, 54 agreed with active euthanasia (70.1%) and 65 with passive (84.4%). The results also indicated that a few socio-demographic characteristics (such as age, gender and household income) statistically significantly correlated with patients’ attitudes towards euthanasia. These findings highlight that Chinese patients with acute illness generally accept the use of euthanasia. Further research on the attitudes and perceptions of patients towards the use of euthanasia is recommended, particularly in diverse groups of Chinese and Asian patients with acute or terminal illness

This paper describes the objectives, methodology, findings, recommendations and implementation programme of a parking demand study which was conducted in Hong Kong during the period 1993-1995. The study comprises extensive surveys to establish parking characteristics and parking inventory, a stated preference survey to estimate the influence of parking space availability on modal choice, development of parking demand models for private cars and goods vehicles, identification of problems related to parking, and formulation of remedial measures.published_or_final_versio
Bright 22 m Excess Candidates from WISE All-Sky Catalog and Hipparcos Main Catalog
In this paper we present a catalog which includes 141 bright candidates
( mag, V band) showing the infrared (IR) excess at 22 m. Of
which, 38 stars are known IR excess stars or disk, 23 stars are double or
multiple stars and 4 are Be stars. While the remaining more than 70 stars are
identified as the 22 m excess candidates in our work. The criterion of
selecting candidates is . All these candidates are selected
from \emph{WISE} All-sky data cross-correlated with \emph{Hipparcos} Main
Catalog and the likelihood-ratio technique is employed. Considering the effect
of background, we introduce the \emph{IRAS} 100 m level to exclude the
high background. We also estimated the coincidence probability of these
sources. In addition, we presented the optical to mid-infrared SEDs and optical
images of all the candidates, and gave the observed optical spectra of 6 stars
with NAOC's 2.16-m telescope. To measure for the dust amount around each star,
the fractional luminosity is also provided. We also test whether our method of
selecting IR excess stars can be used to search for extra-solar planets, we
cross-matched our catalog with known IR-excess stars having planets but none is
matched. Finally, we give the fraction of stars showing IR-excess for different

Stringent requirement for spatial arrangement of extracellular matrix in supporting cell morphogenesis and differentiation
BACKGROUND: In vitro experiments on the functional roles of extracellular matrix (ECM) components usually involve the culture of cells on surfaces coated with purified ECM components. These experiments can seldom recuperate the spatial arrangement of ECM found in vivo. In this study, we have overcome this obstacle by using histological sections of bovine Achilles tendon as cell culture substrates. RESULTS: We found that tendon sections can be viewed as a pre-formed block of ECM in which the collagen fibrils exhibited a spatial regularity unraveled in any artificially constructed scaffold. By carving the tendon at different angles relative to its main axis, we created different surfaces with distinct spatial arrangements of collagen fibrils. To assess the cellular responses to these surfaces, human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were directly cultured on these sections, hence exposed to the collagen with different spatial orientations. Cells seeded on longitudinal tendon sections adopted a highly elongated and aligned morphology, and expressed an increased level of tenomodulin, suggesting that the collagen fibrils present in this section provide a microenvironment that facilitates cell morphogenesis and differentiation. However, MSC elongation, alignment and induction of tenomodulin diminished dramatically even as the sectioned angle changed slightly. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that cell functions are influenced not only by the type or concentration of ECM components, but also by the precise spatial arrangements of these molecules. The method developed in this study offers a simple and robust way for the studying of cell-ECM interactions, and opens many research avenues in the field of matrix biology.published_or_final_versio
Post-TTM Rebound Pyrexia after Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Results in Sterile Inflammation and Apoptosis in Cardiomyocytes
Introduction. Fever is frequently observed after acute ischemic events and is associated with poor outcome and higher mortality.
Targeted temperature management (TTM) is recommended for neuroprotection in comatose cardiac arrest survivors, but
pyrexia after rewarming is proven to be detrimental in clinical trials. However, the cellular mechanisms and kinetics of post-
TTM rebound pyrexia remain to be elucidated. Therefore, we investigated the effects of cooling and post-TTM pyrexia on the
inflammatory response and apoptosis in a cardiomyocyte ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury model. Methods. HL-1
cardiomyocytes were divided into the following groups to investigate the effect of oxygen-glucose deprivation/reperfusion
(OGD/R), hypothermia (33.5°C), and pyrexia (40°C): normoxia controls maintained at 37°C and warmed to 40°C, OGD/R
groups maintained at 37°C and cooled to 33.5°C for 24 h with rewarming to 37°C, and OGD/R pyrexia groups further warmed
from 37 to 40°C. Caspase-3 and RBM3 were assessed by Western blot and TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, SOCS3, iNOS, and RBM3
transcriptions by RT-qPCR. Results. OGD-induced oxidative stress (iNOS) in cardiomyocytes was attenuated post-TTM by
cooling. Cytokine transcriptions were suppressed by OGD, while reperfusion induced significant TNF-α transcription that was
exacerbated by cooling. Significant inductions of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and SOCS3 were observed in noncooled, but not in cooled
and rewarmed, OGD/R-injured cardiomyocytes. Further warming to pyrexia induced a sterile inflammatory response in
OGD/R-injured groups that was attenuated by previous cooling, but no inflammation was observed in pyrexic normoxia groups.
Moreover, cytoprotective RBM3 expression was induced by cooling but suppressed by pyrexia, correlating with apoptotic
caspase-3 activation. Conclusion. Our findings show that maintaining a period of post-TTM “therapeutic normothermia” is
effective in preventing secondary apoptosis-driven myocardial cell death, thus minimizing the infarct area and further release of
mediators of the innate sterile inflammatory response after acute IR injury
A robust computational algorithm for inverse photomask synthesis in optical projection lithography
Inverse lithography technology formulates the photomask synthesis as an inverse mathematical problem. To solve this, we propose a variational functional and develop a robust computational algorithm, where the proposed functional takes into account the process variations and incorporates several regularization terms that can control the mask complexity. We establish the existence of the minimizer of the functional, and in order to optimize it effectively, we adopt an alternating minimization procedure with Chambolle's fast duality projection algorithm. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm is effective in synthesizing high quality photomasks as compared with existing methods.published_or_final_versio
The opportunity recognition framework in the Hong Kong SMEs context
This paper presents a preliminary framework of opportunity recognition in the Hong Kong small and medium enterprises (SMEs) context. Guanxi and four trait variables, namely self-monitoring, extroversion, selfefficacy and creativity are the independent variables while the number of opportunity recognized by entrepreneurs is the dependent variable in the framework. The model indicates a mediation effect of guanxi between self-monitoring and the number of opportunities recognized, and between extroversion and the number of opportunities recognized. Meanwhile, SMEs marketing characteristics are determined by personalities and behaviour of the entrepreneurs as they do not conform to the traditional marketing theories (Gilmore et al., 2001).
