Physiological Response of Soybean Genotypes to Water Limiting Conditions
This article has been retracted by the editor of the African Crop Science Journal. Soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is the most important source of protein as well as vegetable oil world wide. It suffers variously from water shortage at all stages of growth. This study was conducted to explore the physiological responses of soybean genotypes to water limiting conditions. Seven days old seedlings of C01, C08, C27, W01, W06 and W08 drought-sensitive, and C12 and W05 drought-tolerant genotypes used in the study were transplanted in Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes, filled with a soil mixture. Fifty percent of the plants were left unwatered when the second trifoliate leaves were halfway to growth. The rest (50%) were watered daily and considered as the control. Results showed that as soil water content diminished, plant stem elongation, stomatal conductance, relative water content (%RWC), water potential, osmotic potential and turgor pressure of stressed plants declined in all genotypes. The declining trends of those parameters were significantly different, to a great extent, in the drought tolerant genotypes, from the susceptible ones. Key Words: Glycine max, stomatal conductanc

Effect of sucralfate on gastric mucosal blood flow in rats
Sucralfate possesses site protective and cytoprotective actions and heals ulcers effectively, but its effect on gastric mucosal blood flow is unknown. Using an ex vivo gastric chamber preparation, we studied the effect of sucralfate on gastric mucosal blood flow in rats by laser doppler flowmetry. Under both fasting and fed states, measurements of gastric mucosal blood flow and damage were made in rats after topical application of absolute ethanol alone or after pretreatment with sucralfate. Gastric mucosal damage was assessed by measuring the total area of haemorrhagic mucosal lesions. Ethanol induced gastric mucosal lesions were significantly less with sucralfate pretreatment than without (p less than 0.008). Mucosal blood flow significantly fell after ethanol application (p less than 0.001). The fall was significantly less in fed than in fasted rats (p less than 0.05), and after pretreatment with sucralfate 100 mg or 200 mg than without in both fasted (p less than 0.0008 and 0.00001, respectively) and fed (p less than 0.002 and 0.001, respectively) rats. Graded doses of sucralfate (25-400 mg) resulted in an increase in gastric mucosal blood flow in a dose dependent manner (r = 0.731, p less than 0.001). In conclusion that sucralfate increases gastric mucosal blood flow in rats and lessens the fall in blood flow in rats treated with ethanol, and this action may contribute to its protection against the vascular damage of mucosa by ethanol.published_or_final_versio

Prophylactic thyroidectomy in ethnic Chinese patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A syndrome after the introduction of genetic testing
Objective: To evaluate the impact of genetic testing in the management of familial multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A patients. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: University teaching hospital, Hong Kong. Patients: Twenty-two patients from eight multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A families underwent prophylactic total thyroidectomy based on a positive RET mutation genetic testing. All mutations were located at codon 634 of exon 11. Nineteen patients had preoperative basal serum calcitonin measured, and the 12 with normal levels had pentagastrin stimulation tests. Preoperative thyroid ultrasound examination was performed for 17 patients. Results: There were 13 females and 9 males with a median age of 25.1 (range, 6.1-71.9) years. Histopathology revealed medullary thyroid carcinoma in 17 (77%), C-cell hyperplasia in four (18%), and normal pathology in one (5%) of the patients. Five patients with either C-cell hyperplasia or normal pathology were among the youngest (age range, 6-9 years). The youngest patient with medullary thyroid carcinoma was nearly 9 years old. The median size of medullary thyroid carcinomas was 8.3 (range, 0.1-18) mm, but there were no lymph node metastases. Of 15 patients with normal basal calcitonin levels, 10 had medullary thyroid carcinoma, though two tested negative with the pentagastrinstimulated calcitonin assay. Five of six patients with normal preoperative ultrasonographic examinations had medullary thyroid carcinoma. Three (14%) of the patients were prescribed long-term calcium and vitamin D supplementation. After a median follow-up of 49 (range, 13-128) months, no patient had recurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma. Conclusions: Genetic testing has replaced conventional biochemical and radiological modalities to identifying multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A carriers, in order to offer them prophylactic thyroidectomy. Chinese multiple endocrine neoplasia 2A patients with codon 634 mutation seem to have less aggressive forms of medullary thyroid carcinoma, for whom prophylactic thyroidectomy can be considered at the age of 8 years.published_or_final_versio
Rapid neuroinflammatory changes in human acute intracerebral hemorrhage
Objective
Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the commonest form of hemorrhagic stroke and is associated with a poor prognosis. Neurosurgical removal of intracerebral hematoma has limited benefit and no pharmacotherapies are available. In acute ICH, primary tissue damage is followed by secondary pathology, where the cellular and neuroinflammatory changes are poorly understood.
Methods
We studied histological changes in postmortem tissue from a cohort of spontaneous supraâtentorial primary ICH cases (n = 27) with survival of 1â12 days, compared to a matched control group (n = 16) examined in corresponding regions. Hematoxylinâeosin and microglial (Iba1) immunolabelled sections were assessed at 0â2, 3â5, and 7â12 days postâICH.
Results
Periâhematoma, the observed ICHârelated changes include edema, tissue neutrophils and macrophages from day 1. Ischemic neurons and swollen endothelial cells were common at day 1 and universal after day 5, as were intramural erythrocytes within small vessel walls. Activated microglia were evident at day 1 postâICH. There was a significant increase in Iba1 positive area fraction at 0â2 (threefold), 3â5 (fourfold), and 7â12 days post ICH (ninefold) relative to controls. Giant microglia were detected periâhematoma from day 5 and consistently 7â12 days postâICH.
Interpretation
Our data indicate that neuroinflammatory processes commence from day 1 postâICH with changing microglial size and morphology following ICH and up to day 12. From day 5 some microglia exhibit a novel multiply nucleated morphology, which may be related to changing phagocytic function. Understanding the time course of neuroinflammatory changes, postâICH may reveal novel targets for therapy and brain restoration
AMoDSim: An Efficient and Modular Simulation Framework for Autonomous Mobility on Demand
Urban transportation of next decade is expected to be disrupted by Autonomous
Mobility on Demand (AMoD): AMoD providers will collect ride requests from users
and will dispatch a fleet of autonomous vehicles to satisfy requests in the
most efficient way. Differently from current ride sharing systems, in which
driver behavior has a clear impact on the system, AMoD systems will be
exclusively determined by the dispatching logic. As a consequence, a recent
interest in the Operations Research and Computer Science communities has
focused on this control logic. The new propositions and methodologies are
generally evaluated via simulation. Unfortunately, there is no simulation
platform that has emerged as reference, with the consequence that each author
uses her own custom-made simulator, applicable only in her specific study, with
no aim of generalization and without public release. This slows down the
progress in the area as researchers cannot build on each other's work and
cannot share, reproduce and verify the results. The goal of this paper is to
present AMoDSim, an open-source simulation platform aimed to fill this gap and
accelerate research in future ride sharing systems
