Stomach-Thought: Popular Portuguese Imageries of Ethnic Food, Indirect Group Representations, and the Sociocultural Condition of Afrodescendants of Cabo Verdean Origin

    Get PDF
This study is inspired by an ongoing associational project to discuss issues of intercultural communication and to raise our awareness of existing cultural representations and possible discriminatory practices in Portuguese society. It focuses on representations in popular Portuguese imageries of ethnic food, i.e., “African” food versus “Asian” food. The Asian comparison is mainly used to illustrate, highlight, and make sense of the African case. The objective is to use food as a lens of analysis to present a dynamic picture of contemporary Afro-experiences in the West and more specifically in Portugal. The materials discussed were collected over four years of residence and fieldwork in Portugal and abroad using anthropologically-based methods. The present study politicizes our “stomach-thought,” proposing a creative way to understand the challenges and opportunities for Afrodescendants and especially Afrodescendants of Cabo Verdean origin in Portugal, whose experiences form the basis of this article.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cape Verde: Society, Island Identity and Worldviews

The archipelago of Cape Verde is unknown to many people. It is not their fault, especially when Cape Verde is located off the coast of West Africa and is not included in most commercial maps of the African continent. If we read a world map, our attention is seized by major countries, and the tiny nation pales into insignificance. We are missing out on the opportunity to learn about Cape Verde, which has the world’s first creolised population.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Sanches, E. R. (2018). Party systems in young democracies: Varieties of institutionalization in sub-Saharan Africa. London: Routledge. 202 pp.

In this book, Sanches presents an encompassing study of party system institutionalization (PSI) in sub-Saharan Africa. She first revisits the current literature, identifying the research gaps, and then firmly locates the discussion in African contexts. Interested in the varieties of PSI in democratic and hybrid states on the continent, Sanches purposefully isolates the variables of academic interest. By means of an eclectic analysis, she offers explanations for this diversity. As the politica..

Of Hairy Kings and Saintly Slaves: An Ethiopian Travelogue is not what one would expect, even after attending a book launch at which Manuel João Ramos presented an English publication translated professionally. It is certainly not the typical anthropological work that younger researchers are familiar with. Ramos’s most recent book is a 4-in-1 symphony, combining extracts from his travel diary, letters to a Portuguese weekly, transcriptions of Ethiopian legends from the Gondar and Lake T’ana r..

Policy making and political implications and contradictions in changing urban environment - Housing and public transport in Abidjan, Ivory Coast

Abidjan is the largest city in the Ivory Coast with an area of 629 km² and about 5 million inhabitants in 2019. The urban environment has changed over time due to population growth produced by the increase in the natural growth rate and migration and economic and political crises. This change has also occurred through the different systems that have been adopted: traditional practices during the colonial era, the colonial model during the period of colonization, and the Ivorian model after independence. This phenomenon has led to a spatial fragmentation of the city and socio-economic segregation which means that today the city faces major demographic, social, cultural, and political challenges with significant pressure on housing and transport. Through the Afrobarometer indicators, we have identified that housing and transportation issues are among the problems that the government should address at the urban center level. This work shows why it is interesting to look at policies in these two sectors in Abidjan, and how these policies have impacted, are impacting, and will impact the evolution of the urban environment. It also shows how these policies do not correspond and/or do not respond to the challenges that the city faces. Recommendations are proposed to address the problems in these two sectors
