    First evidence for a latitudinal body mass effect in extant Crocodylia and the relationships of their reproductive characters

    Relationships between distribution patterns and body size have been documented in many endothermic taxa. However, the evidence for these trends in ectotherms generally is equivocal, and there have been no studies of effects in crocodylians specifically. Here, we examine the relationship between latitudinal distribution and body mass in 20 extant species of crocodylians, as well as the relationships between seven important reproductive variables. Using phylogenetically independent contrasts to inform generalized linear models, we provide the first evidence of a latitudinal effect on adult female body mass in crocodylians. In addition, we explore the relationships between reproductive variables including egg mass, hatchling mass and clutch size. We report no correlation between egg mass and clutch size, upholding previously reported within-species trends. We also find no evidence of a correlation between measures of latitudinal range and incubation temperature, contrasting with the trends found in turtles

    Evolution and dispersal of snakes across the Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction.

    Mass extinctions have repeatedly shaped global biodiversity. The Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction caused the demise of numerous vertebrate groups, and its aftermath saw the rapid diversification of surviving mammals, birds, frogs, and teleost fishes. However, the effects of the K-Pg extinction on the evolution of snakes-a major clade of predators comprising over 3,700 living species-remains poorly understood. Here, we combine an extensive molecular dataset with phylogenetically and stratigraphically constrained fossil calibrations to infer an evolutionary timescale for Serpentes. We reveal a potential diversification among crown snakes associated with the K-Pg mass extinction, led by the successful colonisation of Asia by the major extant clade Afrophidia. Vertebral morphometrics suggest increasing morphological specialisation among marine snakes through the Paleogene. The dispersal patterns of snakes following the K-Pg underscore the importance of this mass extinction event in shaping Earth's extant vertebrate faunas

    The Effect of the Earned Income Tax Credit in the District of Columbia on Poverty and Income Dynamics

    Using unique longitudinal administrative tax panel data for the District of Columbia (DC), we assess the combined effect of the DC supplemental earned income tax credit (EITC) and the federal EITC on poverty and income dynamics within Washington, DC, from 2001 to 2011. The EITC in DC merits investigation, as the DC supplement to the federal credit is the largest in the nation. The supplemental DC EITC was enacted in 2000, and has been expanded from 10 percent of the federal credit in 2001 to 40 percent as of 2009. To implement the study, we estimate least squares models with 0/1 dependent variables to estimate the likelihood of net-EITC income above poverty and near-poverty thresholds. We also estimate the likelihood of earnings growth and income stabilization from the EITC. To identify the effect of the EITC, we exploit variation in the EITC subsidy rate from 2008 to 2009, when an additional EITC bracket of 45 percent was added for workers with three or more dependent children, up from 40 percent in the previous year for workers with two or more children. We also estimate a model examining the impact of city-level changes to the EITC. The structure and richness of our data enable us to control for tax filer fixed effects, an important innovation from many previous EITC studies. Overall, we find that the combined EITC raises the likelihood of net-EITC income above poverty and near poverty by as much as 9 percent, with the largest consistent effects accruing to single-parent families

    The Rhaetian vertebrates of Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire, UK, a comparative study

    Microvertebrates are common in the basal bone bed of the Westbury Formation of England, documenting a fauna dominated by fishes that existed at the time of the Rhaetian Transgression, some 206 Myr ago. Two sites near Chipping Sodbury, south Gloucestershire, Barnhill Quarry and Chipping Sodbury railway cutting, show differing faunas. Top predators are the large bony fish Severnichthys and the shark Hybodus cloacinus, which preyed on smaller sharks such as Lissodus and Rhomphaiodon. These fishes in turn may have fed on a mixed diet of other fishes and invertebrates, and Lissodus was a shell crusher. Comparisons of these faunas with others described recently from the Bristol region, and from Devon, indicate remarkable faunal similarities in the Rhaetian basal Westbury Formation bone bed over a wide area, based on a variety of ecological statistics that document species diversities and relative abundances.
