    Microclimate variations between semienclosed and open sections of a marathon route

    The Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon, held annually, is one of the most popular international marathon events. Its primarily urban environmental setting characterized by high-density urban areas, semienclosed tunnels, and suspension bridges, together with the herds of runners, has an influence on the microclimate along the marathon course. This study focused on assessing and comparing variations in temperature and vapour pressure (vis-à-vis relative humidity) against the crowd of runners, or the herd effects, in two different environmental settings along the marathon course: semienclosed (a tunnel) versus open space (a suspension bridge). A series of small iButtons were deployed at strategic locations along the course to undertake minute-by-minute measurements of temperature and relative humidity. It was found that herd effects of varying degrees were present in both semienclosed and open settings. Various environmental differences also played a role in ameliorating or amplifying the climatological effects of the herd of runners. Our study suggests that microclimate variations in different environmental settings and crowd conditions could have an impact on runners. This new knowledge can inform the design of marathon routes. It also establishes the feasibility of employing the iButton logging sensors for widespread deployment and monitoring of meteorological situations

    Microclimate variation of urban heat in a small community

    Urbanization is known to disrupt the surface energy balance of an urban area. The phenomenon of higher temperatures and thermal discomforts within a local urban setting is broadly known as the urban heat Island (UHI) effect. This research employed roadside temperature measurements to examine microclimate UHI variation in Mongkok, a small urban community of Hong Kong. Results of the spatio-temporal examination indicated diurnal and seasonal variations in the microclimate. A five-level index named the UHI Threat Rating was devised to offer easy interpretation of the microclimate UHI variations and facilitate identification of temperature hotspots within a small urban community

    Personal Factors Influencing the Perception of Quality of Life in Hong Kong – A Classification Tree Approach

    AbstractThis study explores the interplay between multiple personal factors (i.e. demographic, social, economic, housing, and health) in the perceived quality of life (QOL) in Hong Kong. A classification tree approach was employed to infer the importance of individual attributes in the QOL scores measured on the 5-point Likert scale (1= very dissatisfied to 5= very satisfied; 3= neither dissatisfied nor satisfied). The study included 1163 participants who had completed a postal or an online questionnaire survey between July and August 2015. The majority of respondents (43.5%) expressed satisfied and very satisfied on their perceived QOL, while only 15.5 percent of respondents gave dissatisfied and very dissatisfied ratings. 41 percent of respondents were neutral in their assessment of QOL. None of demographic and social characteristics was important in the prediction of QOL. Monthly household income, tenure of accommodation, housing type and size, and health status were among key factors in determining the QOL. The findings suggested that apart from health status, residents of Hong Kong perceived QOL to highly associate with housing and economic characteristics that reflected their standards of living or personal wealth status. Future studies shall evaluate how personal, social or cultural, and environmental factors contribute towards the perception of QOL

    Determinants of comorbidity in rheumatoid arthritis: influence of demographic and duration of illness

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, disabling autoimmune disease which affects about 5 in 1000 people in Malaysia. Patients with RA are at increased risk of developing comorbid conditions. This research aims at determining these relationships between demographic, duration of illness and comorbidity in RA via a multiple binary logistic (MBL) regression analysis based on the 102 patients’ information (23 males; 79 females) obtained from the rheumatoid clinic of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The relationship of the RA patients with comorbid conditions was studied with focus on the demographic and duration of illness. The variables obtained for analysis were the comorbid conditions namely, hypertension and hyperlipidemia, age, duration of illness, gender, ethnicity, household income and education level. From six independent variables, two were quantitative would be analyzed, while four were categorical, and would be transformed into dummy variables. Four phases in a model-building approach were executed where two models were formed where Model I predicted the probability of occurrence of hypertension with age of patients and first order interaction between duration of illness before diagnosis and household income of less than RM1000 had positive effects on the model, while Model II predicted the occurrence of hyperlipidemia among the RA patients with age of patients and first order interaction variable between gender(female) and age were the contributing factors

    Urban environments and objectively-assessed physical activity and sedentary time in older Belgian and Chinese community dwellers: potential pathways of influence and the moderating role of physical function

    Background Many studies have examined neighbourhood environmental correlates of older adults' physical activity (PA) but only a few focused on sedentary time (ST). Only a small proportion of these studies used objective measures of PA/ST, such as accelerometer-assessed PA/ST, and only a couple employed accelerometer cut-points appropriate for older adults. Furthermore, although older adults experience declines in physical function as they age, there is a dearth of information on the impact of the neighbourhood environment on PA/ST in individuals with different levels of physical function. Methods We used data from two extant cross-sectional studies conducted in Hong Kong (China) and Ghent (Belgium) (N = 829). Participants were recruited from pre-selected administrative units stratified by socio-economic status and walkability. Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and ST were assessed for 7 days using accelerometers and cut-points developed for older adults. Objective neighbourhood environmental attributes within 400 m and 1 km buffers surrounding participants' homes were quantified using Geographic Information Systems data. Lower extremity physical function was objectively assessed. Socio-demographic information was collected via interviews. Total, direct and indirect (mediated) effects of environmental attributes on MVPA and ST were estimated using generalised additive mixed models and the joint-significant test. Results Commercial/civic destination density and number of parks within 1 km from home showed positive total and direct effects on MVPA, and public transport density showed negative total and direct effects on ST, which were consistent across cities and physical function levels. The total and direct effects of residential density on MVPA depended on physical function, and those of residential density on ST differed by city. A complex network of potential inconsistent pathways linking all environmental attributes to MVPA and ST in the whole sample or in subgroups of participants was revealed. Discussion Access to parks and commercial/civic destinations appear to support older adults' MVPA in different geographical and cultural contexts and irrespective of their physical function level. By supporting MVPA, these characteristics also contribute to a reduction in ST. The potential effects of public transport, recreational facilities and residential density are less straightforward and point at inconsistent effects that may depend on the geographical context and level of physical function

    The Novel Effect of Immunomodulator-Glatiramer Acetate on Epileptogenesis and Epileptic Seizures

    Background/Aims: Immunological mechanisms can be triggered as a response to central nervous system insults and can lead to seizures. In this study an investigation was made to determine if glatiramer acetate (GA), an immunomodulator currently used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, could protect rats from pilocarpine-induced seizures and chronic epilepsy. Methods: Two groups of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, experimental (GA) and control, were used in the study. The systemic IL-1α and IL-1β levels at baseline were checked as well as status epilepticus (SE), and the spontaneous recurrent seizure (SRS) stage by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The GA group was given GA (150 μg/kg, ip) and the control group was given a saline injection prior to pilocarpine-induced seizures. Seizure susceptibility, severity and mortality were evaluated, using Racine seizure classification and hippocampal damage was evaluated by Nissl staining. The GA group received GA (150 μg/kg/day, ip) daily after SE, and the chronic spontaneous seizures were evaluated by long-term video recording, and mossy fiber sprouting was evaluated by Timm staining. The IL-1α and IL-1β levels were correlated with seizure activities. The TNF-α level in the hippocampus was determined at the SRS stage by immunohistochemistry. The effect of GA on ionic currents and action potentials (APs) in NG108-15 differentiated neurons was investigated using patch-clamp technology. Results: It was found that latency to severe seizures was significantly longer in the GA (p < 0.01) group, which also had SE of shorter duration and less frequent SRS (p < 0.01). GA attenuated acute hippocampal neuron loss and chronic mossy fiber sprouting in the CA3 and the SRS-reduction correlated with the reduction of IL-1α, but not with IL-1β or TNF-α levels. Mechanistically, GA reduced the peak amplitude of voltage-gated Na+ current (INa), with a negative shift in the inactivation curve of INa and reduced the amplitude of APs along with decreased firing of APs. Conclusion: GA might serve as a neuroexcitability modulator which attenuates pilocarpine-induced acute and chronic excitotoxicity. Sodium channel attenuation was partially independent of the immunomodulatory effect

    Neighbourhood environment, physical activity, quality of life and depressive symptoms in Hong Kong older adults: a protocol for an observational study

    INTRODUCTION: The neighbourhood environment can assist the adoption and maintenance of an active lifestyle and affect the physical and mental well-being of older adults. The psychosocial and behavioural mechanisms through which the environment may affect physical and mental well-being are currently poorly understood. AIM: This observational study aims to examine associations between the physical and social neighbourhood environments, physical activity, quality of life and depressive symptoms in Chinese Hong Kong older adults. METHODS AND ANALYSES: An observational study of the associations of measures of the physical and social neighbourhood environment, and psychosocial factors, with physical activity, quality of life and depressive symptoms in 900 Hong Kong older adults aged 65+ years is being conducted in 2012-2016. The study involves two assessments taken 6 months apart. Neighbourhood walkability and access to destinations are objectively measured using Geographic Information Systems and environmental audits. Demographics, socioeconomic status, walking for different purposes, perceived neighbourhood and home environments, psychosocial factors, health status, social networks, depressive symptoms and quality of life are being assessed using validated interviewer-administered self-report measures and medical records. Physical functionality is being assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery. Physical activity and sedentary behaviours are also being objectively measured in approximately 45% of participants using accelerometers over a week. Physical activity, sedentary behaviours, quality of life and depressive symptoms are being assessed twice (6 months apart) to examine seasonality effects on behaviours and their associations with quality of life and depressive symptoms. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study received ethical approval from the University of Hong Kong Human Research Ethics Committee for Non-Clinical Faculties (EA270211) and the Department of Health (Hong Kong SAR). Data are stored in a password-protected secure database for 10 years, accessible only to the named researchers. Findings will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals
