Searching for Frontiers in Contemporary Eddy Current Model Based Hysteresis Loss Modelling of Superconductors
Alternating current (AC) or magnetic field leads to heat generation in otherwise lossless superconducting materials. Such heat generation is called AC loss. AC loss of special type that occurs in the superconducting material itself, and not in the normal-conducting parts of the superconducting wire is called hysteresis loss. Hysteresis loss is a restricting factor for the feasibility of many superconducting applications, and hence, having reliable and efficient models for predicting hysteresis losses in devices is crucial for the design process.
In this thesis, we first introduce the readers to the mathematical structures that are essential for simulating AC losses. The level of abstraction deviates from what is typical in this field, but it allows us to present the models and formulations we use in a structured manner and naturally program simulation tools, which are independent of the dimension of the modelling domain. We also discuss the background of the research by presenting important aspects of our research philosophy and the framework inside which the research in this field is conducted. Then, we briefly present two formulations implemented in our AC loss simulation tool, the so called H-formulation and the so called T-Phi-Psi-formulation, and compare their properties through simulations. The latter of the formulations exploits the topology of the modelling domain to reduce the number of required equations, and it is superior to the former in terms of running times of the simulations. Furthermore, we discuss the properties of two widely used models, the critical state model and the eddy current model, through particular case studies of superconductors under direct current bias and an alternating magnetic field. Neither one of the models is fully able to reflect the intrinsic properties of high-temperature superconductors. Finally, the possibilities of our simulation tool are investigated: we study the potential of the tool in question to yield predictions of multifilamentary twisted superconductors with partially coupled filaments in external magnetic field in two dimensions. We present a simple algorithm for this, and the obtained simulation results show good agreement with results of three-dimensional simulations
Efficient parallelization of quantum basis state shift
Basis state shift is central to many quantum algorithms, most notably the
quantum walk. Efficient implementations are of major importance for achieving a
quantum speedup for computational applications. We optimize the state shift
algorithm by incorporating the shift in different directions in parallel. This
provides a significant reduction in the depth of the quantum circuit in
comparison to the currently known methods, giving a linear scaling in the
number of gates versus working qubits in contrast to the quadratic scaling of
the state-of-the-art method based on the quantum Fourier transform. For a
one-dimensional array of size for , we derive the total number of
two-qubit gates in the parallel circuit, using a total of
qubits including an ancilla register for the decomposition of
multi-controlled gates. We focus on the one-dimensional and periodic shift, but
note that the method can be extended to more complex cases
Modeling non-planar coils in a full-scale stellarator
Design and modeling of a stellarator fusion reactor is a multidisciplinary
effort that requires a tight integration between simulation of highly nonlinear
multi-physics and representation of non-planar complex geometries. The critical
current calculation and the design of the mechanical structures are among the
most crucial aspects as they set size, cost, and time to build the stellarator.
Because of the asymmetric and non-planar nature of its components the modeling
of such figures of merit needs to be carried out at large scale, without the
possibility of taking advantage of any particular symmetry. In this work we
develop a three-dimensional model for the analysis of the magnetic field and
forces, necessary for such considerations, for complex coil geometries, such as
stellarators, where a two-dimensional approach can not provide accurate
analyses and verification of assumptions. Moreover, this method can quickly
generate a large amount of critical modeling data (e.g. Lorentz load,
displacement and stresses) that could be integrated into a workflow for coil
design optimization based on machine learning or other recent optimization
tools.Comment: Presented at EUCAS 2023, Bologna, Italy. Minor revisio
Team Finland -kasvuohjelmien arviointi
Tämän arvioinnin tavoitteena on tuottaa tietoa Team Finland -kasvuohjelmatoiminnan kehittämisen tueksi.
