    ‘Look-at-me’ Versus ‘Look-at-this’: Signed Language Interpreters’Perceptions of Promotion on Facebook

    This article reports on a study exploring signed language interpreters’ perceptions of promotion on Facebook. Due to the global prevalence of Facebook, this study incorporated an international perspective by holding focus groups comprising 12 signed language interpreters from three nations: the United States, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. Facebook was perceived as a beneficial tool for promoting awareness and information about professional news and for implicit professional self-promotion. Specific strategies were reported for managing professional presentations of self on the social networking site. Interpreters promoting accessibility at events where their presence was requested was deemed acceptable, but further research is needed to conclusively determine common perspectives on an interpreter sharing information via Facebook about a public interpreting event after the fact. Participants in this study felt it was permissible for Deaf clients to post pictures or videos of working interpreters on Facebook but less so for the interpreters to post such media of themselves

    In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph.In the United States, there is a significant drug problem affecting millions directly and countless others indirectly. Drug use and drug-related crime have been on the rise for decades. The government has attempted numerous programs and policies, even declaring a war on drugs. None of these programs have been effective, as evident in the fact that drug use has continued to rise. Drug use and drug-related crime have caused a number of problems for the United States. The most detrimental are the loss of life and deterioration of the very fundamentals that make up our society. This deterioration includes rising crime rates, the breakup of neighborhoods, and dysfunction in families. Other problems include the overcrowding of prisons, rising health costs, and ineffective government policies such as wasting money on unsuccessful programs

    Top quarks can be produced abundantly at hadron colliders like the Tevatron at Fermilab and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and a variety of measurements of top-quark properties have been gathered in the recent years from four experiments: CDF and D0 at the Tevatron and ATLAS and CMS at the Large Hadron Collider. In this review the most recent results on the measurement of the top-quark mass by the four different collaborations, with various techniques and considering different topologies, are reported.Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures.     Economic Tools for Merger Appraisal: A Theoretical and Empirical Standpoint

    This paper presents in a retrospective manner economic tools for merger control and market delineation. Particularly, it focuses, via theoretical and empirical standpoint, on price based techniques for merger control such as tools of market delineation in one sided markets as the «Could Approach» of Critical Loss analysis, and tools for measuring the unilateral effects of a merger such as the Upward Pricing Pressure by Farrell & Shapiro (2010), the Gross Upward Price Pressure Index (2010) by Moresi (2010) and the Buying Power Index by Blair & Harrison (2010). The theoretical standpoint reveals that economic tools for merger control have been enhanced through the time in order to deal with the increasingly amount of merger cases, while the empirical standpoint supports the idea that competition economics have become a standard reference during the analysis of them. Even though competition analysis for antitrust and abuse of dominant position cases is considered to be a castle for lawyers, economists play a crucial role in quantifying the effects of mergers on competition

    Apoptosis of HeLa and CaSki cell lines incubated with All-trans retinoid acid.

    The aim of the study was to evaluate the concentrations of a soluble form of APO-1/Fas antigen (sFas, CD95) and a soluble Ligand for APO-1/Fas antigen (sCD95L, sFasL) in supernatants from CaSki and HeLa cell line cultures after the incubation with All-trans-retinoic acid. HPV-16 and HPV18 - positive cell lines were cultivated with All-trans-retinoic acid in concentrations of 1 x 10(-6) M/L and 1 x 10(-8) M/L. The cultures were incubated for 24 hours. Control culture with 3 microl of dimethyl-sulphoxide (DMSO) was incubated under identical conditions. The concentrations of soluble APO-1/Fas antigen and Fas Ligand in cell culture supernatants were estimated using immunoenzymatic methods. The obtained results showed significant decrease of concentrations of soluble APO-1/Fas antigen in supernatants from HeLa cell lines incubated with retinol in comparison with the control culture. Moreover, the concentrations of soluble Ligand for APO-1/Fas antigen in the supernatants of CaSki and HeLa cell lines were significantly lower in the culture incubated with All-trans retinoid acid when compared to the control culture. Higher concentrations of soluble APO-1/Fas antigen in supernatants from HeLa cell line without retinol may constitute a protective mechanism of the cells infected with the virus before undergoing Fas/FasL-dependent apoptosis. Lower concentrations of soluble APO-1/Fas antigen and soluble Ligand for APO-1/Fas in the supernatants from CaSki and HeLa cell cultures incubated with retinol suggest that retinoids can decrease the synthesis of soluble APO-1//Fas and soluble FasL in HPV-16 and HPV - 18 positive cells and that mechanisms protecting infected cells against Fas/FasL-mediated apoptosis become defective under the influence of retinol
