Bibliography of socio-economic studies : fisheries of the northeast U.S.
This bibliography of social and economic studies of the fisheries of the
Northeast United States (Maine to North Carolina) includes annotated listings
for each entry and an index of key words for cross-referencing. We have
attempted to include all studies published since 1970, and a selected group of
particularly significant studies done earlier. The major focus has been on
commercial fisheries, but recreational fishing studies have also been included
when possible. In addition to studies of the Northeast United States
fisheries, studies of Canadian fishing subsidies, European and other markets,
have been included because of their relevance to the regional industry. All
stages of the fishing industry's operation - harvesting, processing,
distribution, marketing - are included, along with management and policy

Detection and characterization of hydraulically active fractures in a carbonate aquifer: results from self-potential, temperature and fluid electrical conductivity logging in the Combioula hydrothermal system in the southwestern Swiss Alps
A geophysical and geochemical study has been conducted in a fractured carbonate aquifer located at Combioula in the southwestern Swiss Alps with the objective to detect and characterize hydraulically active fractures along a 260-m-deep borehole. Hydrochemical analyses, borehole diameter, temperature and fluid electrical conductivity logging data were integrated in order to relate electrokinetic self-potential signals to groundwater flow inside the fracture network. The results show a generally good, albeit locally variable correlation of variations of the self-potential signals with variations in temperature, fluid electrical conductivity and borehole diameter. Together with the hydrochemical evidence, which was found to be critical for the interpretation of the self-potential data, these measurements not only made it possible to detect the hydraulically active fractures but also to characterize them as zones of fluid gain or fluid loss. The results complement the available information from the corresponding litholog and illustrate the potential of electrokinetic self-potential signals in conjunction with temperature, fluid electrical conductivity and hydrochemical analyses for the characterization of fractured aquifers, and thus may offer a perspective for an effective quantitative characterization of this increasingly important class of aquifers and geothermal reservoir

High resolution HLA analysis reveals independent class I haplotypes and amino-acid motifs protective for multiple sclerosis.
We investigated association between HLA class I and class II alleles and haplotypes, and KIR loci and their HLA class I ligands, with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 412 European American MS patients and 419 ethnically matched controls, using next-generation sequencing. The DRB1*15:01~DQB1*06:02 haplotype was highly predisposing (odds ratio (OR)â=â3.98; 95% confidence interval (CI)â=â3-5.31; p-value (p) =â2.22E-16), as was DRB1*03:01~DQB1*02:01 (ORâ=â1.63; CIâ=â1.19-2.24; pâ=â1.41E-03). Hardy-Weinberg (HW) analysis in MS patients revealed a significant DRB1*03:01~DQB1*02:01 homozyote excess (15 observed; 8.6 expected; pâ=â0.016). The OR for this genotype (5.27; CIâ=â1.47-28.52; pâ=â0.0036) suggests a recessive MS risk model. Controls displayed no HW deviations. The C*03:04~B*40:01 haplotype (ORâ=â0.27; CIâ=â0.14-0.51; pâ=â6.76E-06) was highly protective for MS, especially in haplotypes with A*02:01 (ORâ=â0.15; CIâ=â0.04-0.45; pâ=â6.51E-05). By itself, A*02:01 is moderately protective, (ORâ=â0.69; CIâ=â0.54-0.87; pâ=â1.46E-03), and haplotypes of A*02:01 with the HLA-B Thr80 Bw4 variant (Bw4T) more so (ORâ=â0.53; CIâ=â0.35-0.78; pâ=â7.55E-04). Protective associations with the Bw4 KIR ligand resulted from linkage disequilibrium (LD) with DRB1*15:01, but the Bw4T variant was protective (ORâ=â0.64; CIâ=â0.49-0.82; pâ=â3.37-04) independent of LD with DRB1*15:01. The Bw4I variant was not associated with MS. Overall, we find specific class I HLA polymorphisms to be protective for MS, independent of the strong predisposition conferred by DRB1*15:01
On the reduction of the CSP dichotomy conjecture to digraphs
It is well known that the constraint satisfaction problem over general
relational structures can be reduced in polynomial time to digraphs. We present
a simple variant of such a reduction and use it to show that the algebraic
dichotomy conjecture is equivalent to its restriction to digraphs and that the
polynomial reduction can be made in logspace. We also show that our reduction
preserves the bounded width property, i.e., solvability by local consistency
methods. We discuss further algorithmic properties that are preserved and

Propositional Dynamic Logic for Message-Passing Systems
We examine a bidirectional propositional dynamic logic (PDL) for finite and
infinite message sequence charts (MSCs) extending LTL and TLC-. By this kind of
multi-modal logic we can express properties both in the entire future and in
the past of an event. Path expressions strengthen the classical until operator
of temporal logic. For every formula defining an MSC language, we construct a
communicating finite-state machine (CFM) accepting the same language. The CFM
obtained has size exponential in the size of the formula. This synthesis
problem is solved in full generality, i.e., also for MSCs with unbounded
channels. The model checking problem for CFMs and HMSCs turns out to be in
PSPACE for existentially bounded MSCs. Finally, we show that, for PDL with
intersection, the semantics of a formula cannot be captured by a CFM anymore
Does Treewidth Help in Modal Satisfiability?
Many tractable algorithms for solving the Constraint Satisfaction Problem
(CSP) have been developed using the notion of the treewidth of some graph
derived from the input CSP instance. In particular, the incidence graph of the
CSP instance is one such graph. We introduce the notion of an incidence graph
for modal logic formulae in a certain normal form. We investigate the
parameterized complexity of modal satisfiability with the modal depth of the
formula and the treewidth of the incidence graph as parameters. For various
combinations of Euclidean, reflexive, symmetric and transitive models, we show
either that modal satisfiability is FPT, or that it is W[1]-hard. In
particular, modal satisfiability in general models is FPT, while it is
W[1]-hard in transitive models. As might be expected, modal satisfiability in

Processing Succinct Matrices and Vectors
We study the complexity of algorithmic problems for matrices that are
represented by multi-terminal decision diagrams (MTDD). These are a variant of
ordered decision diagrams, where the terminal nodes are labeled with arbitrary
elements of a semiring (instead of 0 and 1). A simple example shows that the
product of two MTDD-represented matrices cannot be represented by an MTDD of
polynomial size. To overcome this deficiency, we extended MTDDs to MTDD_+ by
allowing componentwise symbolic addition of variables (of the same dimension)
in rules. It is shown that accessing an entry, equality checking, matrix
multiplication, and other basic matrix operations can be solved in polynomial
time for MTDD_+-represented matrices. On the other hand, testing whether the
determinant of a MTDD-represented matrix vanishes PSPACE$-complete, and the
same problem is NP-complete for MTDD_+-represented diagonal matrices. Computing

Sociology and postcolonialism: another 'missing' revolution?
Sociology is usually represented as having emerged alongside European modernity. The latter is frequently understood as sociology's special object with sociology itself a distinctively modern form of explanation. The period of sociology's disciplinary formation was also the heyday of European colonialism, yet the colonial relationship did not figure in the development of sociological understandings. While the recent emergence of postcolonialism appears to have initiated a reconsideration of understandings of modernity, with the development of theories of multiple modernities, I suggest that this engagement is more an attempt at recuperating the transformative aspect of postcolonialism than engaging with its critiques. In setting out the challenge of postcolonialism to dominant sociological accounts, I also address `missing feminist/queer revolutions', suggesting that by engaging with postcolonialism there is the potential to transform sociological understandings by opening up a dialogue beyond the simple pluralism of identity claims
