    Producción CientíficaOur proposal deals with the meaning of urban voids in the post-COVID-19 period to suggest new understandings of how urban green corridors can positively affect design for healthier and more sustainable cities. According to Secchi (1986), planning through the void involves a profound revision of the way we think about the city, reversing the points of interest, proposing as polarities the spaces that do not usually emerge. The void thus becomes an opportunity, a chance to improve the structure of our urban landscape (Lopez-Pineiro, 2020). A city is a powerful place, always in motion and transformation. It has an artificial spirit full of surprises and vague limits. It is the scene of remarkable transformations that in their wildness are partially ungovernable by the designers themselves. The desire to control them leaves a series of abandoned and unfinished spaces, “holes” that live from their discontinuity with the surroundings (Labriola, 2021). During a period of crisis, like the one that we are still living with COVID-19 (Fabris et al, 2020), it is common to re-think our cities to create better places for the community. After the long period of forced distance that we lived, an evolution of public space is recommended. During the pandemic, the emptiness of our cities permitted Nature to re-appropriate its spaces. Following this trend and thinking about a new kind of public space where Nature and its inside processes are the protagonists, it is possible to intervene in our cities. The porosity of the urban fabric in towns without humans, blocked at home by the never-ending lockdowns, became a new green corridor that revealed the presence of wildlife (both fauna and flora) as part of a forgotten urban layer that turned visible again. The preservation of this new asset should be possible. The spaces to allow this change can be the abandoned and empty areas present in the contemporary city’s sick body that we can finally heal. The so-called wastelands, voids, or terrain vague, have a significant value independent from the environment in which they are inserted, showing a relationship with the contemporary city extraneous to its rhythms. For this reason, they are the perfect place for experimentation in terms of greenways, a possible starting point to re-think how green can be part of the urban texture and how to conceive public and open spaces after the nowadays crisis. The paper considers the Metropolitan City of Milan as a remarkable case study to understand the pivotal role played by urban voids in the formation of greenways and their capacity of reshaping the environmental, aesthetic and healthy dimensions of urban landscapes

    Circulating Levels of Ferritin, RDW, PTLs as Predictive Biomarkers of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation Risk after Cardiac Surgery in Extracorporeal Circulation

    Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is the most common arrhythmia after cardiac surgery in conventional extracorporeal circulation (CECC), with an incidence of 15-50%. The POAF pathophysiology is not known, and no blood biomarkers exist. However, an association between increased ferritin levels and increased AF risk, has been demonstrated. Based on such evidence, here, we evaluated the effectiveness of ferritin and other haematological parameters as POAF risk biomarkers in patients subjected to cardiac surgery. We enrolled 105 patients (mean age = 70.1 +/- 7.1 years; 70 men and 35 females) with diverse heart pathologies and who were subjected to cardiothoracic surgery. Their blood samples were collected and used to determine hematological parameters. Electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters were also evaluated. The data obtained demonstrated significantly higher levels of serum ferritin, red cell distribution width (RDW), and platelets (PLTs) in POAF patients. However, the serum ferritin resulted to be the independent factor associated with the onset POAF risk. Thus, we detected the ferritin cut-off value, which, when >= 148.5 ng/mL, identifies the subjects at the highest POAF risk, and with abnormal ECG atrial parameters, such as PW indices, and altered structural heart disease variables. Serum ferritin, RDW, and PTLs represent predictive biomarkers of POAF after cardiothoracic surgery in CECC; particularly, serum ferritin combined with anormal PW indices and structural heart disease variables can represent an optimal tool for predicting not only POAF, but also the eventual stroke onset

Convocó a intelectuales de prestigio internacional, investigadores, académicos y gestores estatales, y en una metodología de innovación articuló las voces académicas con las de las organizaciones sociales y/o barriales en el Foro de las Organizaciones Sociales que tuvo su espacio propio para dar voz a quienes están trabajando en los desafíos para garantizar los derechos a la vivienda y los bienes urbanos en nuestras ciudades del Siglo XXI

    Stimulating students in logical thinking and imagination through a new multi-analysis method - a Sino-Italian collaborative class experience

    The Chinese “National Medium and Long-Term Educational Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020)” clearly stated: “Encourage schools at all levels to carry out various forms of international exchanges and cooperation, explore various ways to introduce high-quality foreign teaching resources, and improve exchanges level of cooperation”. Under this policy background, the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) has carried out teaching and research cooperation with the Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI). This collaboration permitted to achieve remarkable results in discussing on Sino-European urban landscapes, resilient cities, landscape, and heritage protection also through the global identity authentication alliance EduGAIN, sharing high-quality educational resources via the digital resource platform “Cedation Network Federal Certification and Resource Sharing Infrastructure” (CARSI) combining for the first time the BUCEA’s “Landscape Architecture International Design Work Camp” course with POLIMI’s “Metabolism of City and Landscape” to jointly build a long-term professional “Collaborative Class” under the EU education model. The paper will focus on this first experimental course integrating further education and teaching systems. It mainly includes lectures by internationally renowned professors, block-based lectures, and heuristic dialogues. The joint course aims to stimulate POLIMI and BUCEA students to use logical thinking and imagination to explore a new multi-analysis method of the cultural landscape in theoretical study, design analysis and conceptual expression, tracing, translating, and imagining the concept of landscape design under different cultural backgrounds to appreciate the resilience of contemporary cities from multiple perspectives. As a method, BUCEA and POLIMI teachers propose to students a complete theory and case studies through the online teaching platform. On this basis, the multivariate analysis of landscape design concepts focuses on a “present-past-future” lens as a logical clue into four training steps: 1) Screening of landscape core words, 2) Etymology analysis, 3) Historical evolution, and 4) Future scenarios. The concept is that students can fully use their imagination to deduce the multi-layered connotation and different forms of change of core words in the future urban resilience development. Finally, using the film-by-learning method, students intuitively express their thoughts and exploration through dynamic images and record their learning feelings. The video learning method replaces the traditional sketching encouraging students to conduct multiple explorations of landscape design concepts through participatory processes such as commentary and analysis more perceptually and communicatively
