Explore parameter sensitivities and model calibration in a locally coupled environment
A locally coupled Single Column Model (SCM) was used for sensitivity analysis and model calibration. The sensitivity analysis was used to identify 32 land-surface parameters which appeared to be more or less sensitive in the locally coupled environment. The multi-objective sensitive analysis shows that the land surface-atmosphere interactions could have significant influences on the model parameter sensitivities. The calibration results suggest that it is crucial to include both land-surface and atmospheric parameters in the calibration of a coupled land surface model

Exploring parameter sensitivities of the land surface using a locally coupled land-atmosphere model
This paper presents a multicriteria analysis that explores the sensitivity of the land surface to changes in both land and atmospheric parameters, in terms of reproducing surface heat fluxes and ground temperature; for the land parameters, offline sensitivity analyses were also conducted for comparison to infer the influence of land-atmosphere interactions. A simple "one-at-a-time" sensitivity analysis was conducted first to filter out some insensitive parameters, followed by a multicriteria sensitivity analysis using the multiobjective generalized sensitivity analysis algorithm. The models used were the locally coupled National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) single-column community climate model and the offline NCAR land surface model, driven and evaluated by a summer intensive operational periods (IOP) data set from the southern Great Plains. As expected, the results show that land-atmosphere interactions (with or without land-atmosphere parameter interactions) can have significant influences on the sensitivity of the land surface to changes in the land parameters, and the single-criterion sensitivities can be significantly different from the multicriteria sensitivity. These findings are mostly model and data independent and can be generally useful, regardless of the model/data dependence of the sensitivities of individual parameters. The exceptionally high sensitivities of the selected atmospheric parameters in a multicriteria sense (and in particular for latent heat) appeal for adequate attention to the specification of effective values of these parameters in an atmospheric model. Overall, this study proposes an effective framework of multicriteria sensitivity analysis beneficial to future studies in the development and parameter estimation of other complex (offline or coupled) land surface models. 59-Co and 75-As NMR Investigation of Electron-Doped High Tc Superconductor BaFe(1.8)Co(0.2)As(2) (Tc = 22K)
We report an NMR investigation of the superconductivity in BaFe(2)As(2)
induced by Co doping (Tc=22K). We demonstrate that Co atoms form an alloy with
Fe atoms and donate carriers without creating localized moments. Our finding
strongly suggests that the underlying physics of iron-pnictide superconductors
is quite different from the widely accepted physical picture of high Tc
cuprates as doped Mott insulators. We also show a crossover of electronic
properties into a low temperature pseudo-gap phase with a pseudo-gap Delta
560K, where chi(spin) constant and resisitivty T. The NMR Knight shift below Tc
decreases for both along the c-axis and ab-plane, and is consistent with the

In this reply, we show that when we apply standard distribution theory to the
Lippmann-Schwinger equation, the resulting spaces of test functions would
comply with the Hardy axiom only if classic results of Paley and Wiener, of
Gelfand and Shilov, and of the theory of ultradistributions were wrong. As
well, we point out several differences between the ``standard method'' of
constructing rigged Hilbert spaces in quantum mechanics and the method used in
Time Asymmetric Quantum Theory.Comment: 13 page
Boundary Effects in 2+1 Dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons Theory
The boundary effects in the screening of an applied magnetic field in a
finite temperature 2+1 dimensional model of charged fermions minimally coupled
to Maxwell and Chern-Simons fields are investigated. It is found that in a
sample with only one boundary -a half-plane- a total Meissner effect takes
place, while in a sample with two boundaries -an infinite strip- the external
magnetic field partially penetrates the material.Comment: revte
Electrostatic attraction between cationic-anionic assemblies with surface compositional heterogeneities
Electrostatics plays a key role in biomolecular assembly. Oppositely charged
biomolecules, for instance, can co-assembled into functional units, such as DNA
and histone proteins into nucleosomes and actin-binding protein complexes into
cytoskeleton components, at appropriate ionic conditions. These
cationic-anionic co-assemblies often have surface charge heterogeneities that
result from the delicate balance between electrostatics and packing
constraints. Despite their importance, the precise role of surface charge
heterogeneities in the organization of cationic-anionic co-assemblies is not
well understood. We show here that co-assemblies with charge heterogeneities
strongly interact through polarization of the domains. We find that this leads
to symmetry breaking, which is important for functional capabilities, and
structural changes, which is crucial in the organization of co-assemblies. We
determine the range and strength of the attraction as a function of the
competition between the steric and hydrophobic constraints and electrostatic

Courant-like brackets and loop spaces
We study the algebra of local functionals equipped with a Poisson bracket. We
discuss the underlying algebraic structures related to a version of the
Courant-Dorfman algebra. As a main illustration, we consider the functionals
over the cotangent bundle of the superloop space over a smooth manifold. We
present a number of examples of the Courant-like brackets arising from this
