Use of Robotics kits for the enhancement of metacognitive skills of mathematics: a possible approach

    Get PDF
The present study is aimed at analyzing the process of building and programming robots as a metacognitive tool of mathematics. Quantitative data from a study performed on a sample of students attending an Italian secondary school are described. Results showed that robotics activities may be used as a new metacognitive environment allowing students to improve their attitude towards mathematics, and to increase their attitude to reflect on themselves and on their own learning, and their higher-level control components, such as forecasting, planning, monitoring and evaluation exercises and problems related to implementation

This study is aimed at evaluation the reliability and validity of the Virtual Reality as tool for the neuropsychological assessment in OCD patients. Was used neuropsychological battery and the virtual version of the Multiple Errand Test (V-MET)- developed using the NeuroVR software, in order to evaluate the executive functions, the ability to plan ahead on complex problem solving tasks in daily life in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) patients and healthy controls. The results showed the presence of difficulties of OCD patients: lower level of divided attention and higher levels of errors; higher mean rank of inefficiencies, interpretation failures and rule breaks and longer time of execution of the whole task. By contrast, controls have higher level of efficiency and better performance. In addition, significant correlation found between the V-MET and the neuropsychological battery confirm and support the ecological validity of neurocognitive assessment through NeuroVirtual Realit

Modelling and experimental characterization of secondary suspension elements for rail vehicle ride comfort simulation

    Get PDF
Secondary suspensions play an essential role in the dynamic behaviour of rail vehicles. In particular, they are adopted to reduce the vibrations transmitted to the carbody, thus improving ride comfort. In this paper, an experimental characterization of the viscous damper and coil spring elements composing a vertical secondary suspension is presented. The elements are separately tested with the aim of analysing their dynamic behaviour. Then, modified prototypes are manufactured to reduce the transmitted force. The results of the experimental campaign are later adopted to tune the parameters of the mathematical model of the whole secondary suspension, including the dynamics of both the coil spring and the damper elements. This model allows discussing the effectiveness of the proposed modifications, proving the design of both the components to be fundamental for the improvement of ride comfort

Break in volition: a virtual reality study in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder

Research in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) produced inconsistent results in demonstrating an association between patients' symptom severity and their cognitive impairments. The process involved in volition aspects of behavioral syndromes can be extensively analyzed using specific tests developed in virtual environments, more suitable to manipulate rules and possible breaks of the normal task execution with different, confusing or stopping instructions. The study involved thirty participants (15 OCD patients and 15 controls) during task execution and the relative interferences. At this purpose, the virtual version of Multiple Errands Test was used. Virtual reality setting, with a higher ecological validity respect to a classic neuropsychological battery, allowed us to take into account deficits of volition and the relative dysexecutive functions associated with OCD patients. The proposed paradigm also allows the development of innovative prototypes of coevolving technologies based on new theories and models and deeper understanding of human behavior

An in plane flexible ring model for the analysis of the free and forced response of a rolling tyre

    Get PDF
The increased demand for vibroacoustic comfort as well as regulations on noise and vibration levels made the NVH performances of a vehicle one of the fundamental design criteria. Therefore, predictive models for the analysis of noise and vibration transmission mechanisms represent interesting tools to support the R&D department of the automotive companies. Focusing the attention on passenger’s comfort, the vibrations induced by the tyre/road interaction propagate from the contact area to the hub and finally inside the cockpit through structure-borne transmission paths. This can be regarded as one of the major contributors to car cabin interior noise at low frequencies (20-500 Hz). Simplified models able to interpret the waves propagating inside the tyre structure and influenced by the angular speed may support the studies in this research field. To this end, an analytical model based on the theory of the flexible ring on elastic foundation was developed. It allows analysing the tyre dynamics in both static and rotating conditions. Model parameters were calibrated based on an Experimental Modal Analysis of the static tyre. The free response of the tyre shows the bifurcation effect at different rotating speeds, while a cleat test simulation allows investigating the forced response of the tyre

Acceleration-based condition monitoring of track longitudinal level using multiple regression models

    Get PDF
In this paper, a condition monitoring system for railway track geometry is presented. The methodology has been designed for high-speed application, where the train travels at the maximum allowed speed for most of the trip. The system is designed to rely on acceleration data recorded by in-service vehicles to provide estimations of the track longitudinal level, based on pre-built regression models. It exploits synthetic indicators sampled over predefined track sections 100 m long. Different predictors are considered, computed both from acceleration data and from track geometry measured by the diagnostic train. The proposed modelling strategy allows distinguishing between isolated and distributed defects that populate the railway track as well as reproducing the evolution over time of the maximum longitudinal level registered in the considered track section; moreover, also accurate predictions of the defect amplitude are made. The results have been validated against track geometry data recorded by the diagnostic train during a monitoring period of 2 years. It is proven that the proposed system could support current maintenance strategies, providing a continuous flow of data to monitor the track infrastructure
