The Crystal and Mesophase Structure of Hexakis(alkylsulfono)- benzene Homologues by X-Ray Diffractometry
A powder X-ray diffractometer study of hexakis(tridecylsulfono)benzene (HASB13) has been carried out over the temperature range 20 to above 80 °C. In this range three phase transitions are observed by sharp discontinuities in the diffraction pattern indicating a solid-solid, solidmesophase, and mesophase-liquid transition. The mesomorphic phase is identified as a hexagonal columnar discotic mesophase, Dhd, with intercolumnar spacing of 25.7 Å and average stacking distance of 4.9 Å. Both distances are independent of temperature but there appears to be a gradual increase in the stacking disorder as the temperature is increased. The magnitude of the intercolumnar distance suggests a considerable degree of side chain disorder. A detailed X-ray diffraction study was also performed at room temperature on a single crystal of hexakis(propylsulfono) benzene (HASB3), which is not mesogenic. The results provide detailed information on the structure of HASB 3 which is used in the interpretation of HASB 13 results
Green function approach for scattering quantum walks
In this work a Green function approach for scattering quantum walks is
developed. The exact formula has the form of a sum over paths and always can be
cast into a closed analytic expression for arbitrary topologies and position
dependent quantum amplitudes. By introducing the step and path operators, it is
shown how to extract any information about the system from the Green function.
The method relevant features are demonstrated by discussing in details an

Effect of ultraviolet-A radiation on the production of <i>Leptolegnia chapmanii</i> (Saprolegniales: Saprolegniaceae) zoospores on dead <i>Aedes aegypti</i> (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae and their larvicidal activity
Impact of UV-radiation in entomopathogens in aquatic environments remains little investigated. The present study reports on the effect of UV-A on the larvicidal activity of Leptolegnia chapmanii zoospores in Aedes aegypti; on the production of zoospores in larvae killed by the pathogen and then exposed to UV-A; and on the activity of these zoospores against healthy larvae. Whereas the virulence of free zoospores in A. aegypti larvae was affected by a UV-A exposure time longer than 10. min, production of zoospores in larvae and their virulence were not hampered at a maximal 8. h exposure of dead larvae to UV-A. Findings suggest that dead larvae and zoosporangia provide a certain protection to zoospores against UV-A and emphasize the susceptibility of free encysted zoospores to such radiation.Centro de Estudios Parasitológicos y de Vectore
Anomalous quantum chaotic behavior in nanoelectromechanical structures
It is predicted that for sufficiently strong electron-phonon coupling an
anomalous quantum chaotic behavior develops in certain types of suspended
electro-mechanical nanostructures, here comprised by a thin cylindrical quantum
dot (billiard) on a suspended rectangular dielectric plate. The deformation
potential and piezoelectric interactions are considered. As a result of the
electron-phonon coupling between the two systems the spectral statistics of the
electro-mechanic eigenenergies exhibit an anomalous behavior. If the center of
the quantum dot is located at one of the symmetry axes of the rectangular
plate, the energy level distributions correspond to the Gaussian Orthogonal
Ensemble (GOE), otherwise they belong to the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE),

The Higgs mechanism as a cut-off effect
We compute the Coleman-Weinberg potential with a finite cut-off for pure
SU(2) and SU(3) five-dimensional gauge theories compactified on an interval. We
show that besides the expected Coulomb phase located at and in the vicinity of
the free infrared stable or "trivial" fixed point, the theory possesses also a
Higgs phase. We compare the results from the potential computation with lattice

Semiclassical properties and chaos degree for the quantum baker's map
We study the chaotic behaviour and the quantum-classical correspondence for
the baker's map. Correspondence between quantum and classical expectation
values is investigated and it is numerically shown that it is lost at the
logarithmic timescale. The quantum chaos degree is computed and it is
demonstrated that it describes the chaotic features of the model. The

Factors Affecting European Farmers’Participation in Biodiversity Policies
This article reports the major findings from an interdisciplinary research project that synthesises key insights into farmers’ willingness and ability to co-operate with biodiversity policies. The results of the study are based on an assessment of about 160
publications and research reports from six EU member states and from international comparative research.We developed a conceptual framework to systematically review the
existent literature relevant for our purposes. This framework provides a common structure for analysing farmers’ perspectives regarding the introduction into farming practices of measures relevant to biodiversity. The analysis is coupled and contrasted with a survey of experts. The results presented above suggest that it is important to view support for practices oriented towards biodiversity protection not in a static sense – as a situation determined by one or several influencing factors – but rather as a process marked by interaction. Financial compensation and incentives function as a necessary, though
clearly not sufficient condition in this process
