Pneumatic dilatation (PD) and surgical miotomy (SM) are presentely the best treastments for untreated achalasia, with similar efficacy. There is no information on the relative efficacy of PD in younger compared to older patients. Aim of our study was to compare success rate and safety of PD patients under fifty years old in our Unit with graded PD under fluoroscopic view. Five male and 15 female with a median age of 47 years were treated. Twelve patients were less than fifthy years old (group I) while 8 were older (group II). Median dysphagia questionnaire score was 14 and 13 in group I and II respectively. Technical success was achieved in all patients. Seven patients were previously treated through other techniques. In group I all patients achieved a complete remission of symptoms with significant decrease of the dysphagia questionnaire (3). in group II all patients achieved a complete remissionof symptoms with significant decrease of the dysphagia questionnaire score (4,5) but 3 of them repeated the procedure. In boths groups the efficacy of the dilation was radiologically confirmed. Neither early nor late complications were reported in either groups. In our experience PD was an effective and safe procedure both in young and old patients although the older group had more recurrences, all successfully re-dilated

Revisiting Deniability in Quantum Key Exchange via Covert Communication and Entanglement Distillation

We revisit the notion of deniability in quantum key exchange (QKE), a topic that remains largely unexplored. In the only work on this subject by Donald Beaver, it is argued that QKE is not necessarily deniable due to an eavesdropping attack that limits key equivocation. We provide more insight into the nature of this attack and how it extends to other constructions such as QKE obtained from uncloneable encryption. We then adopt the framework for quantum authenticated key exchange, developed by Mosca et al., and extend it to introduce the notion of coercer-deniable QKE, formalized in terms of the indistinguishability of real and fake coercer views. Next, we apply results from a recent work by Arrazola and Scarani on covert quantum communication to establish a connection between covert QKE and deniability. We propose DC-QKE, a simple deniable covert QKE protocol, and prove its deniability via a reduction to the security of covert QKE. Finally, we consider how entanglement distillation can be used to enable information-theoretically deniable protocols for QKE and tasks beyond key exchange.Comment: 16 pages, published in the proceedings of NordSec 201

Molecular and electrophysiological features of spinocerebellar ataxia type seven in induced pluripotent stem cells.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is an inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by a polyglutamine repeat expansion in the ATXN7 gene. Patients with this disease suffer from a degeneration of their cerebellar Purkinje neurons and retinal photoreceptors that result in a progressive ataxia and loss of vision. As with many neurodegenerative diseases, studies of pathogenesis have been hindered by a lack of disease-relevant models. To this end, we have generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from a cohort of SCA7 patients in South Africa. First, we differentiated the SCA7 affected iPSCs into neurons which showed evidence of a transcriptional phenotype affecting components of STAGA (ATXN7 and KAT2A) and the heat shock protein pathway (DNAJA1 and HSP70). We then performed electrophysiology on the SCA7 iPSC-derived neurons and found that these cells show features of functional aberrations. Lastly, we were able to differentiate the SCA7 iPSCs into retinal photoreceptors that also showed similar transcriptional aberrations to the SCA7 neurons. Our findings give technical insights on how iPSC-derived neurons and photoreceptors can be derived from SCA7 patients and demonstrate that these cells express molecular and electrophysiological differences that may be indicative of impaired neuronal health. We hope that these findings will contribute towards the ongoing efforts to establish the cell-derived models of neurodegenerative diseases that are needed to develop patient-specific treatments

Data collection was performed by analyzing 886 records of the victims' registration and transcribed to an instrument formulated for the study. The victims were between 18 and 88 years old, with low education; they suffered physical, psychological, sexual and structural violence, mainly by their partners and acquaintances. They lived with violence to maintain their family union and decided to resolve the situation when they had access to social programs and shelters. Violence is a common phenomenon among single women with incomplete primary education; 24.6% suffered physical violence, 24.15% psychological, and 14.22% structural violence. Single women, whether in a common-law relationship or married, should be considered as an at-risk group and worthy subjects of attention by health professionals when planning preventive actions
