First results on Martian carbon monoxide from Herschel/HIFI observations
We report on the initial analysis of Herschel/HIFI carbon monoxide (CO) observations of the Martian atmosphere performed between 11 and 16 April 2010. We selected the (7–6) rotational transitions of the isotopes ^(13)CO at 771 GHz and C^(18)O and 768 GHz in order to retrieve the mean vertical profile of temperature and the mean volume mixing ratio of carbon monoxide. The derived temperature profile agrees within less than 5 K with general circulation model (GCM) predictions up to an altitude of 45 km, however, show about 12–15 K lower values at 60 km. The CO mixing ratio was determined as 980 ± 150 ppm, in agreement with the 900 ppm derived from Herschel/SPIRE observations in November 2009
HIFI observations of water in the atmosphere of comet C/2008 Q3 (Garradd)
High-resolution far-infrared and sub-millimetre spectroscopy of water lines is an important tool to understand the physical and chemical properties of cometary atmospheres. We present observations of several rotational ortho- and para-water transitions in comet C/2008 Q3 (Garradd) performed with HIFI on Herschel. These observations have provided the first detection of the 2_(12)−1_(01) (1669 GHz) ortho and 1_(11)−0_(00) (1113 GHz) para transitions of water in a cometary spectrum. In addition, the ground-state transition 1_(10)−1_(01) at 557 GHz is detected and mapped. By detecting several water lines quasi-simultaneously and mapping their emission we can constrain the excitation parameters in the coma. Synthetic line profiles are computed using excitation models which include excitation by collisions, solar infrared radiation, and radiation trapping. We obtain the gas kinetic temperature, constrain the electron density profile, and estimate the coma expansion velocity by analyzing the map and line shapes. We derive water production rates of 1.7−2.8 × 10^(28) s^(−1) over the range r_h = 1.83−1.85 AU
Submillimeter continuum observations of Sagittarius B2 at subarcsecond spatial resolution
We report the first high spatial resolution submillimeter continuum
observations of the Sagittarius B2 cloud complex using the Submillimeter Array
(SMA). With the subarcsecond resolution provided by the SMA, the two massive
star-forming clumps Sgr B2(N) and Sgr B2(M) are resolved into multiple compact
sources. In total, twelve submillimeter cores are identified in the Sgr B2(M)
region, while only two components are observed in the Sgr B2(N) clump. The gas
mass and column density are estimated from the dust continuum emission. We find
that most of the cores have gas masses in excess of 100 M and column
densities above 10 cm. The very fragmented appearance of Sgr
B2(M), in contrast to the monolithic structure of Sgr B2 (N), suggests that the
former is more evolved. The density profile of the Sgr B2(N)-SMA1 core is well
fitted by a Plummer density distribution. This would lead one to believe that
in the evolutionary sequence of the Sgr B2 cloud complex, a massive star forms
first in an homogeneous core, and the rest of the cluster forms subsequently in
the then fragmenting structure.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted by A&A letter
A Herschel/HIFI Legacy Survey of HF and H2O in the Galaxy: Probing Diffuse Molecular Cloud Chemistry
We combine Herschel observations of a total of 12 sources to construct the
most uniform survey of HF and H2O in our Galactic disk. Both molecules are
detected in absorption along all sight lines. The high spectral resolution of
the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) allows us to compare the
HF and H2O distributions in 47 diffuse cloud components sampling the disk. We
find that the HF and H2O velocity distributions follow each other almost
perfectly and establish that HF and H2O probe the same gas-phase volume. Our
observations corroborate theoretical predictions that HF is a sensitive tracer
of H2 in diffuse clouds, down to molecular fractions of only a few percent.
Using HF to trace H2 in our sample, we find that the N(H2O)-to-N(HF) ratio
shows a narrow distribution with a median value of 1.51. Our results further
suggest that H2O might be used as a tracer of H2 -within a factor 2.5- in the
diffuse interstellar medium. We show that the measured factor of ~2.5 variation
around the median is driven by true local variations in the H2O abundance
relative to H2 throughout the disk. The latter variability allows us to test
our theoretical understanding of the chemistry of oxygen-bearing molecules in
the diffuse gas. We show that both gas-phase and grain-surface chemistry are
required to reproduce our H2O observations. This survey thus confirms that
grain surface reactions can play a significant role in the chemistry occurring
in the diffuse interstellar medium n_H < 1000 cm^-3.Comment: 53 pages; 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ main journa
Collisional excitation of singly deuterated ammonia NHD by H
The availability of collisional rate coefficients with H is a
pre-requisite for interpretation of observations of molecules whose energy
levels are populated under non local thermodynamical equilibrium conditions. In
the current study, we present collisional rate coefficients for the NHD /
para--H() collisional system, for energy levels up to (735 K) and for gas temperatures in the range K. The
cross sections are obtained using the essentially exact close--coupling (CC)
formalism at low energy and at the highest energies, we used the
coupled--states (CS) approximation. For the energy levels up to
(215 K), the cross sections obtained through the CS formalism are
scaled according to a few CC reference points. These reference points are
subsequently used to estimate the accuracy of the rate coefficients for higher
levels, which is mainly limited by the use of the CS formalism. Considering the
current potential energy surface, the rate coefficients are thus expected to be
accurate to within 5\% for the levels below , while we estimate
an accuracy of 30\% for higher levels
Multi-agent system for dynamic manufacturing system optimization
This paper deals with the application of multi-agent system concept for optimization of dynamic uncertain process. These problems are known to have a computationally demanding objective function, which could turn to be infeasible when large problems are considered. Therefore, fast approximations to the objective function are required. This paper employs bundle of intelligent systems algorithms tied together in a multi-agent system. In order to demonstrate the system, a metal reheat furnace scheduling problem is adopted for highly demanded optimization problem. The proposed multi-agent approach has been evaluated for different settings of the reheat furnace scheduling problem. Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithm with different classic and advanced versions: GA with chromosome differentiation, Age GA, and Sexual GA, and finally a Mimetic GA, which is based on combining the GA as a global optimizer and the PSO as a local optimizer. Experimentation has been performed to validate the multi-agent system on the reheat furnace scheduling problem
