Creating Opportunities for Improving Lake-Focused Stakeholder Engagement: Knowledge–Action Systems, Pro-Environment Behavior and Sustainable Lake Management
Managers, policymakers, non-government organizations and community groups are increasingly relying on stakeholder participation to bolster lake management efforts. The growing portfolio of lake-focused stakeholder engagement cases offers valuable information about the efficacy of alternative stakeholder engagement strategies. While attention has been devoted to inventorying these instances, lesser emphasis has been given to evaluating the effectiveness of different participation and engagement approaches. There is arguably no panacea for involving stakeholders in lake and basin management. Lake management challenges in distinct natural and human systems necessitate diverse approaches for interacting with stakeholders. As calls for stakeholder participation increase and management budget constraints tighten, the urgency of exploring and documenting the effectiveness of alternative approach rises. This paper examines lake-focused stakeholder participation activities targeting individuals and households, summarizes and shares recent findings from research of knowledge–action processes and pro-environment behaviours, and offers encouragement and guidance for lake managers to create opportunities for improving lake-focused stakeholder engagement
Transdisciplinary research partnerships in sustainability science: an examination of stakeholder participation preferences
Sustaining coupled natural and human systems requires multiple forms of knowledge, experiences, values, and resources be brought into conversation to address sustainability challenges. Transdisciplinary research partnerships provide the opportunity to meet this requirement by bringing together interdisciplinary scientists with stakeholders in some or all stages of the knowledge production process. However, building partnerships to produce sustainability outcomes is a complex process requiring an understanding of the social psychological and contextual variables impacting partnerships. Here, we explore local government officials’ (LGOs’) preferences for participation in these partnerships. Using data from a statewide survey, we develop a theoretically and empirically derived model to test the relationship between a suite of factors and LGOs’ preferred transdisciplinary partnership style. We find collaboration preferences are influenced by LGOs’ confidence that researchers can help solve problems, experience with researchers, the severity and type of problem(s) occurring in the community, and partner trust. Assessing stakeholder partnership expectations may assist partners with co-designing flexible research processes that address collaboration expectations, foster dialog and social learning among project partners, and that increase the potential of research to influence change
The impact of seismic noise produced by wind turbines on seismic borehole measurements
Seismic signals produced by wind turbines can have an
adverse effect on seismological measurements up to distances of several
kilometres. Based on numerical simulations of the emitted seismic wave field,
we study the effectivity of seismic borehole installations as a way to
reduce the incoming noise. We analyse the signal amplitude as a function of
sensor depth and investigate effects of seismic velocities, damping
parameters and geological layering in the subsurface. Our numerical
approach is validated by real data from borehole installations affected by
wind turbines. We demonstrate that a seismic borehole installation with an
adequate depth can effectively reduce the impact of seismic noise from wind
turbines in comparison to surface installations. Therefore, placing the
seismometer at greater depth represents a potentially effective measure to
improve or retain the quality of the recordings at a seismic station.
However, the advantages of the borehole decrease significantly with
increasing signal wavelength.</p
Impurity and strain effects on the magnetotransport of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films
The influence of zinc doping and strain related effects on the normal state
transport properties(the resistivity, the Hall angle and the orbital magneto-
resistance(OMR) is studied in a series of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films with
values of y between 0 and 0.12 and various degrees of strain induced by the
mismatch between the films and the substrate. The zinc doping affects only the
constant term in the temperature dependence of cotangent theta but the strain
affects both the slope and the constant term, while their ratio remains
constant.OMR is decreased by zinc doping but is unaffected by strain. The ratio
delta rho/(rho*tan^2 theta) is T-independent but decreases with impurity
doping. These results put strong constraints on theories of the normal state of
high- temperature superconductors
Hemodynamic-GUIDEd management of Heart Failure (GUIDE-HF)
In that study, incremental reductions in the PA pressures in the monitored arm were associated with both reduction in the frequency of HFH and improvements in health-related quality of life among patients with both preserved (HFpEF) and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).3,4 Additionally, hemodynamic-guided HF management in the subset of HFrEF patients treated with guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) was associated with a strong trend toward improved survival compared to traditional clinical management.4,7 Consistent benefit is demonstrated in several retrospective studies from the CHAMPION Trial.10-13 as well as extensive analysis of “real-world� experience.6,14 and in Medicare claims data managed in a commercial setting.5,15 Whether the benefits of PA pressure guided therapy can be extended to a broader pool of patients with milder (NYHA class II) or more severe (NYHA class IV) HF or to those without recent hospitalization for HF but with elevation in natriuretic peptide levels remains unclear. Orbital Magnetoresistance in the LaSrCuO System
Measurements of resistivity, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance have been
made on seven c-axis oriented thin-film specimens of La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) with
values of x from 0.048 to 0.275, and one specimen that also contains Nd. The
orbital magnetoresistance is found not to be proportional to the square of the
tangent of the Hall angle except for values of x near 0.15 above about 80K. For
smaller values of x the temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance is
different, but quite similar in the various specimens, in spite of large
differences in resistivity, Hall coefficient, and Hall angle.Comment: LaTeX, 14 pages, 4 embedded color eps figure
Magnetotransport in the Normal State of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 Films
We have studied the magnetotransport properties in the normal state for a
series of La1.85Sr0.15Cu(1-y)Zn(y)O4 films with values of y, between 0 and
0.12. A variable degree of compressive or tensile strain results from the
lattice mismatch between the substrate and the film, and affects the transport
properties differently from the influence of the zinc impurities. In
particular, the orbital magnetoresistance (OMR) varies with y but is
strain-independent. The relations for the resistivity and the Hall angle and
the proportionality between the OMR and tan^2 theta are followed about 70 K. We
have been able to separate the strain and impurity effects by rewriting the
above relations, where each term is strain-independent and depends on y only.
We also find that changes in the lattice constants give rise to closely the
same fractional changes in other terms of the equation.The OMR is more strongly
supressed by the addition of impurities than tan^2 theta. We conclude that the
relaxation ratethat governs Hall effect is not the same as for the
magnetoresistance. We also suggest a correspondence between the transport
properties and the opening of the pseudogap at a temperature which changes when
the La-sr ratio changes, but does not change with the addition of the zinc
impurities
Soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction across the risk spectrum
Patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) have a high residual risk of adverse outcomes, even when treated with optimal guideline-directed medical therapy and in a clinically stable state. Soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) stimulators have the potential to lower this risk by modifying the nitric oxide–sGC–cyclic guanosine monophosphate cascade – a pathophysiological pathway that has been targeted with limited success in HFrEF previously. Vericiguat, an sGC stimulator, was shown to improve outcomes in patients with HFrEF in the VICTORIA (Vericiguat Global Study in Subjects with Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction) trial. However, this trial included patients with recently worsening disease. In this brief review, we discuss the rationale of evaluating sGC stimulators in lower-risk HFrEF patients. First, all key HFrEF medications have been evaluated in both higher- and lower-risk populations, and the treatment effect is not always consistent across the risk spectrum. Second, pre-clinical studies and post-hoc studies of the VICTORIA trial have suggested that sGC stimulators may have cardioprotective effects – these effects may be more apparent when the medication is initiated earlier in the disease process. Third, the effect of vericiguat on cardiovascular mortality remains uncertain and a trial with a longer follow-up in a lower-risk population may allow better assessment of its effect on cardiovascular mortality. Therefore, there is a pertinent need to investigate the effects of vericiguat in optimally treated, low-risk HFrEF patients (i.e. those without recently worsening heart failure).</p
Community syndicalism for the United States: preliminary observations on law and globalization in democratic production
two structural labor crises for developed economies: 1) The channeling of substantial investment into non-productive, paper commodities, reducing growth of production for use and therefore reducing available aggregate job creation; and 2) The continued exportation of industrial jobs to other lower cost jurisdictions, and outsourcing, automation, just-in-time production, and speed-ups associated with global supply chains. As a result, local communities and regional populations have destabilized and even collapsed with attendant social problems. One possible response is Community Syndicalism – local community finance and operating credit for industrial production combined with democratic worker ownership and control of production. The result would increase investment directly for production, retain jobs in existing population centers, promote job skilling, and retain tax bases for local services and income supporting local businesses, at the same time increasing support for authentic political democracy by rendering the exploitive ideology of the Public/Private distinction superfluous. Slowing job exportation may reduce the global race to the bottom of labor standards and differential wage rates reducing the return to producers of value and increasing the skew of income distribution undermining social wages and welfare worldwide. Community Syndicalism can serve as moral goal in an alternative production model focusing incentives on long term stability of jobs and community economic base
Sleep-disordered breathing-do we have to change gears in heart failure?
The majority of patients with heart failure have sleep-disordered breathing (SDB)-with central (rather than obstructive) sleep apnoea becoming the predominant form in those with more severe disease. Cyclical apnoeas and hypopnoeas are associated with sleep disturbance, hypoxaemia, haemodynamic changes, and sympathetic activation. Such patients have a worse prognosis than those without SDB. Mask-based therapies of positive airway pressure targeted at SDB can improve measures of sleep quality and partially normalise the sleep and respiratory physiology, but recent randomised trials of cardiovascular outcomes in central sleep apnoea have been neutral or suggested the possibility of harm, likely from increased sudden death. Further randomised outcome studies (with cardiovascular mortality and hospitalisation endpoints) are required to determine whether mask-based treatment for SDB is appropriate for patients with chronic systolic heart failure and obstructive sleep apnoea, for those with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and for those with decompensated heart failure. New therapies for sleep apnoea-such as implantable phrenic nerve stimulators-also require robust assessment. No longer can the surrogate endpoints of improvement in respiratory and sleep metrics be taken as adequate therapeutic outcome measures in patients with heart failure and sleep apnoea
